The advent of phasor measurement unit in power system is revolutionizing the conventional grid towards smart grid. Phasor measurement units are extremely expensive devices which takes into account many aspects of the power system that are not disclosed by the manufacturer while estimating phasors of currents and voltage. This paper aims to build a laboratory prototype of PMU which can estimate the phasor updating process of a commercial PMU at the benefit of improved measurement accuracy, reduced manufacturing cost and increased timely information.

We address in this paper the parallelization of a recursive algorithm for triangular matrix inversion (TMI) based on the 'Divide and Conquer' (D&C) paradigm. A series of different versions of an original sequential algorithm are first presented. A theoretical performance study permits to establish an accurate comparison between the designed algorithms. Afterwards, we develop an optimal parallel communication-free algorithm targeting a heterogeneous environment involving processors of different speeds. For this purpose, we use a non equitable and incomplete version of the D&C paradigm consisting in recursively decomposing the original TMI problem in two subproblems of non equal sizes, then decomposing only one subproblem and so on. The theoretical study is validated by a series of experiments achieved on two platforms, namely an 8-core shared memory machine and a distributed memory cluster of 16 nodes. The obtained results permit to illustrate the interest of the contribution.

A number of binary modulation schemes are proposed for LED based Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems to jointly achieve data transmission and brightness control. These binary modulation based solutions are spectrally inefficient because they consider the LED light source as single device. We observe that most of the commercial LED lights use more than one LED per light source and the possibility of individual current control of these LEDs would provide better brightness control resolution as well as higher data transmission rates. To achieve this we propose multi-level multi-pulse position modulation block coding scheme to jointly control multiple LEDs providing flicker free VLC link. The brightness level of the light source is controlled based on the number of LEDs switched on simultaneously. New algorithms are developed for symbol encoding/decoding as well as to enumerate the maximum number of symbols that can be encoded for the selected brightness level and the number of levels. Improvement in spectral efficiency is analyzed and compared with the contending binary modulation schemes.

Error sensitivity measure is normally a commonly used factor for se-arching the optimal structure of a neural network. Starting with the derivation of a recursive equation for the update of a reduced order parametric vector based on the full order parametric vector, the error sensitivity measure for use in linear regressor and RBF network pruning is re-derived and an approximated error sensitivity measure identical to that of proposed in optimal brain damage has been obtained. Considering the training is accomplished by recursive least square method, an on-line training-pruning algorithm is proposed.

A new discrete element method is developed to study the dynamic motion of a fibre. The fibre model is represented by an articulated body system. This paper presents the 3-D dynamic modelling of a suspended fibre using recursive algorithms based on the Newton-Euler equations of the articulated body system. The relative acceleration at each connection, which named joint, between two bodies is given as a function of the joint positions, velocities and accelerations. This method guarantees a facility of implementation, fast resolutions and high numerical stability and has a good convergence rate. Results of several dynamic simulations of long fibres subjected to falling and bending tests with one fixed or constrained end are presented.

This paper derives the recursive formulas of the computation of the criterion functions for the well-known weighted recursive least squares algorithm and the finite-data-window recursive least squares algorithm for linear regressive models. The analysis indicates that the proposed recursive computation formulas can be extended to the least squares estimation algorithms for pseudo-linear regression models, e.g., the equation error systems.

In this paper we study a class of Mixed Bivariate Poisson Distributions by extending the Hofmann Distribution from the univariate case to the bivariate case. We show how to evaluate the bivariate aggregate claims distribution and we fit some insurance portfolios given in the literature. This study typically extends the use of the Bivariate Independent Poisson Distribution, the Mixed Bivariate Negative Binomial and the Mixed Bivariate Poisson Inverse Gaussian Distribution. © 2001, International Actuarial Association. This paper presents a trajectory generation algorithm for multibody robotic systems based on the Product of Exponentials (PoE) formulation, also known as screw theory. A PoE formulation is first developed to model the kinematics and dynamics of a multibody robotic manipulator with 7 revolute joints and an end effector. An inverse kinematic algorithm based on the Newton-Raphson iterative method is then applied to generate constrained joint-space trajectories corresponding to straight-line motion of the end effector in Cartesian space with finite jerk. Derivatives of these joint-space trajectories are computed using Bezier curves, which ensures dynamically feasible trajectories. A novel method of Mean Arctangent Absolute Percentage Error (MAAPE) is then used to check accuracy of the derivatives of joint-space trajectories. The Newton-Euler recursive algorithm is then implemented to compute the inverse dynamics, which generates the joint torques required to achieve the reference trajectories. These torques are then incorporated into a closed-loop control algorithm, and simulation studies are performed using a dynamic model of the robotic system. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach is able to successfully generate constrained trajectories, the MAAPE shows that lower order Bezier curves approximate the joint-space derivatives with the same accuracy as higher order polynomials, and the closed-loop controller provides accurate trajectory tracking subject to model uncertainties. This algorithm can be used to generate trajectories for robotic arms performing spacecraft servicing missions, because it also takes into account the variable gravity vector. The significant contribution of this method is integration of all of these techniques applied to a multibody robotic system.

This article address the identification problem of the natural frequency and the damping ratio of a second order continuous system where the-input is a sinusoidal signal. An algebra based approach for identifying parameters of a Mask Spring Damper (MSD) system its proposed and compared to the Kalman-Bucy filter. The proposed estimator uses the algebraic parametric method in the frequency domain yielding exact formula, when placed in the time domain to identify the unknown parameters. We focus on finding the optimal sinusoidal exciting trajectory which allow to minimize the variance of the identification algorithms. We show that the variance of the estimators issued from the algebraic identification method introduced by Fliess and Sira-Ramirez is less sensitive to the input frequency than the ones obtained by the classical recursive Kalman-Bucy filter. Unlike conventional estimation approach, where the knowledge of the statistical properties of the noise is required, algebraic method is deterministic and non-asymptotic. We show that we don't need to know the variance of the noise so as to perform these algebraic estimators. Moreover, as they are non-asymptotic, we give numerical results where we show that they can be used directly for online estimations without any special setting.

Wide area measurement is significant for modernized control of power system. Phasor measurement unit (PMU) being the prime element for wide area measurement system (WAMS), it provides proper feedback to the closed looped controller to take proper steps during power system transients. This paper aims to measure the state of six bus power system in off-nominal frequency condition. To achieve this firstly a three phase PMU is simulated using recursive algorithm and then the algorithm is made frequency adaptive by re-sampling. Pseudo measurement using ABCD parameter is also proposed and implemented.
