EDI controls design support system using relational database system

The purpose of this paper is to introduce EDIRDB (EDI controls design support system using a relational database system), a prototype audit support system based on a relational database designed to act as a decision aid for EDI auditors. This paper describes how EDIRDB operates;explicates the manner in which a relational database is utilized to support the design of EDI controls;suggests relevant risks resulting from the absence of some controls;and suggests test results. The system recommends effective controls and shows relevant risks in a specific organizational context, suggesting test procedures for that particular company. The EDIRDB database consists of nine tables: (1) four tables from the entities ENVIRONMENTS, CONTROLS, RISKS, and TESTS, and (2) five tables corresponding to the relations between each of the four entities. An E-R (Entity-Relationship) diagram along with a data flow diagram are drawn to show the system's design. Relevant controls, risks, and test procedures along with their results can be stored for each individual company. Managers can suggest required controls, relevant risks, and test procedures from results coming through cross referencing (e.g., JOIN, PROJECTION, and SELECT commands) between the nine base tables. This system improves the efficiency and effectiveness of EDI auditing and may also be applied to general IS auditing. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

relational databases get more and more employed in order to store the content of a web site. At the same time, XML is fast emerging as the dominant standard at the hypertext level of web site management describing pages and links between them. Thus, the integration of XML with relational database systems to enable the storage, retrieval, and update of XML documents is of major importance. Data model heterogeneity and schema heterogeneity, however, make this a challenging task. In this respect, the contribution of this paper is threefold. First, a comparison of concepts available in XML schema specification languages and relational database systems is provided. Second, basic kinds of mappings between XML concepts and relational concepts are presented and reasonable mappings in terms of mapping patterns are determined. Third, design alternatives for integrating XML and relational database systems are examined and X-Ray, a generic approach for integrating XML with relational database systems is proposed. Finally, an in-depth evaluation of related approaches illustrates the current state of the art with respect to the design goals of X-Ray.

A map describes real world from a particular point of view, and there are many types of map objects. A map object may be either geometry or raster. In this paper, I present a design of map database system on the top of relational database management system. First, two types of objects node and edge are iintegrated into the system to be enable to handle graph maps. I also present a three dimensional map application using raster map. Integration of map and text is also presented.

ALGORITHMS AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF JOIN PROCESSING ON KD-TREE INDEXED RELATIONS

This paper proposes a new join processing algorithm for the KD-tree indexed relations. The processing is evaluated by a simulation and the effectiveness is demonstrated. The KD-tree index is one of the typical multidimensional clustering data structures. A flexible database can be constructed which provides uniform access characteristics in regard to the multiple attributes. On the other hand, the data structure is made complex, and the traditional join processing technique for the ordinary one-dimensional clustering relation, which maintains the physical order, cannot be applied. Also, there has not been proposed a join technique for the KD-tree indexed relations. This paper introduces anew the concepts called ''wave and ''join range,'' and proposes an efficient join algorithm for the KD-tree indexed relations. Then an extended algorithm is proposed by introducing the garbage collection function into the forementioned basic algorithm, where the unnecessary tuples on the main memory can be eliminated dynamically. Each of those algorithms is evaluated by a simulation, and the effectiveness is verified. When the order of the join attribute is not preserved, the join processing by the hash-based algorithm, which at present is considered the fastest, requires two read scannings and one write scanning, while the best algorithm proposed in this paper can execute the processing by almost one read scanning. Thus, a drastic improvement of the performance can be expected for the join processing by the proposed algorithm.

A matrix approach to the customer-oriented product design

A customer-oriented product designer must rely on many types of information, including customer-product requirements and design developments in the related fields. Concurrent engineering applications in product design problems will help designers to systematically consider relevant design information and make the most effective use of the time they devoted to the design process. Even though many new principles and approaches have been introduced to help designers to identify the relationship between customer requirements and design characteristics and solve complex design problems, they seldom focus on the generation of feasible design alternatives. This drawback greatly affects customer-oriented product design development. This research introduces a matrix approach that can efficiently generate feasible design alternatives for a specific set of customer requirements. The procedures developed for this matrix approach is based on a congruent matrix multiplication operator, component design strategy, and relational database system. A sport shoe design is used as an example to help explain the development of these procedures. The results indicate that the matrix approach will assist designers in linking customer requirements with products during design development and even enhance the efficiency of concurrent engineering.

We propose a design methodology based on data flow analysis for a functionally distributed, multiprocessor database machine. We define a cost model of database processing with the objective cost being response time of a set of query strategies. Heuristic optimization techniques are proposed using the operations of grouping, decomposition, and replication. We apply the new optimization techniques in several realistic multiprocessor environments. The resulting configurations of multiprocessors demonstrate significant performance improvements over more traditional designs.

Advanced-database for the Development of Ni-Base Superalloys

We constructed a database for Ni-base Superalloys development. The database includes many data related to Superalloy development in areas of chemical composition in alloy design, casting and heat treatment in processing, and results of creep tests, thermal fatigue tests, oxidation tests, and so on. This distributed-type database includes small database systems for each category of data, such that it is possible to retrieve required data from an individual category. The system, which performs all data retrieval, is arranged upstream of these small databases and refers to the data according to its relation from all small databases. While enhancing data security, the system enables effective and reliable retrieval. Using the database, evaluation and analysis can be performed using huge volumes of data related to Superalloy development.

It is often desirable to represent in a database entities whose properties cannot be deterministically classified. We develop a new data model that includes probabilities associated with the values of the attributes. The notion of missing probabilities is introduced for partially specified probability distributions. This new model offers a richer descriptive language allowing the database to more accurately reflect the uncertain real world. Probabilistic analogs to the basic relational operators are defined and their correctness is studied. Also, a set of new operators that have no counterpart in conventional relational systems is presented.

Image analysis, at the higher levels, works with extracted regions and line segments and their properties, not with the original raster data. Thus, a spatial information system must be able to store points, lines, and areas as well as their properties and interrelationships. In a previous paper (Shapiro and Haralick [17]), we proposed for this purpose an entity-oriented relational database system. In this paper, we describe our first experimental spatial information system which employs these concepts to store and retrieve watershed data for a portion of the state of Virginia. We describe the logical and physical design of the system and discuss the architectural implications.

Cloud SQL Server is a relational database system designed to scale-out to cloud computing workloads. It uses Microsoft SQL Server as its core. To scale out, it uses a partitioned database on a shared-nothing system architecture. Transactions are constrained to execute on one partition, to avoid the need for two-phase commit. The database is replicated for high availability using a custom primary-copy replication scheme. It currently serves as the storage engine for Microsoft's Exchange Hosted Archive and SQL Azure.
