Android RMI: a user-level remote method invocation mechanism between Android devices

This paper presents the design and implementation of a user-level remote method invocation (RMI) mechanism between Android devices called Android RMI, which extends the original Binder mechanism. Android RMI is developed as a user-level program so that it can easily be ported into other devices running Android. Since Android RMI provides similar programming abstractions to those used to invoke local services, existing applications need little modifications when they run over multiple devices. Furthermore, unlike previous approaches where only application services can be invoked, Android RMI allows users to invoke system services as well as application services between devices using remote parcel format. By reducing the number of marshalling and unmarshalling steps, the time taken for remote method invocation is shortened by 148 % in 4 KBytes and by up to 432 % in 100 KBytes compared to distributed intent where additional marshalling and unmarshalling steps are needed.

The thesis inquires the potential of a remote method invocation in the context of the Android mobile devices. The primary goal of the thesis is to investigate execution of security-critical parts of application code on smart cards (a prominent example of a smart card is the SIM card). Further, the thesis discusses issues of implementation of the remote method invocation in general, covering also its other frequent forms (such as execution on a remote server). A part of the thesis is a real world case study, which demonstrates the results of the thesis.

In the framework of distributed object systems, this paper presents the concepts and an implementation of an overlapping mechanism between communication and computation. This mechanism allows to decrease the execution time of a remote method invocation with parameters of large size. We report our effort in engineering a high performance remote method invocation (RMI) mechanism for the Common Component Architecture (CCA). This mechanism provides a highly efficient and easy-to-use mechanism for distributed computing in CCA, enabling CCA applications to effectively leverage parallel systems to accelerate computations. This work is built on the previous work of Babel RMI. Babel is a high performance language interoperability tool that is used in CCA for scientific application writers to share, reuse, and compose applications from software components written in different programming languages. Babel provides a transparent and flexible RMI framework for distributed computing. However, the existing Babel RMI implementation is built on top of TCP and does not provide the level of performance required to distribute fine-grained tasks. We observed that the main reason the TCP based RMI does not perform well is because it does not utilize the high performance interconnect hardware on a cluster efficiently. We have implemented a high performance RMI protocol, HPCRMI. HPCRMI achieves low latency by building on top of a low-level portable communication library, Aggregated remote Message Copy Interface (ARMCI), and minimizing communication for each RMI call. Our design allows a RMI operation to be completed by only two RDMA operations. We also aggressively optimize our system to reduce copying. In this paper, we discuss the design and our experimental evaluation of this protocol. Our experimental results show that our protocol can improve RMI performance by an order of magnitude.

remote method invocation is a distributed object model for the Java programming language that making distributed objects easy to implement and tousle. remote method invocation applications are often comprised of two separate programs: a Server and a Client. A typical server application creates a number of remote objects, makes references to those remote objects accessible, and waits for clients to invoke methods on those remote objects. In view of the needs of the organization's business and cross-platform of the system, the distributed object technology and component technology based on the java platform is an ideal choice of the large-scale distributed application system of the development of the enterprise. With respect to the current popular web-based distributed application system, from the point of the software design, this article puts forward the distributed architecture based on the java remote method invocation technology, and in the actual design and development have got more satisfactory results.

A mobile agent is a program that is not bound to the system on which it began execution, but rather travels amongst the hosts in the network with its code and current execution state (i.e. Distributed Environment). The Mobile Agent technology is emerging as an alternative to build a smart generation of highly distributed systems. In this work, we investigate the performance aspect of agent-based technologies for information retrieval. We present a comparative performance evaluation model of Mobile Agents versus remote method invocation by means of an analytical approach. A quantitative measurements are performed to compare Java RMI and mobile agents using communication time, code size(agent code), Data size, number of node as performance parameters in this research work. The results depict that Mobile Agent paradigm offers a superior performance compared to RMI paradigm, offers fast computational speed;procure lower invocation cost by making local invocations instead of remote invocations over the network, thereby reducing network bandwidth.

Secure execution of Java applets using a remote playground

Mobile code presents a number of threats to machines that execute ii. We introduce an approach for protecting machines and the resources they hold from mobile code and describe a system based on our approach for protecting host machines from Java 1.1 applets. In our approach, each Java applet downloaded to the protected domain is rerouted to a dedicated machine (or set of machines), the playground, at which it is executed. Prior to execution, the applet is transformed to use the downloading user's web browser as a graphics terminal for its input and output and so the user has the illusion that the applet is running on her own machine. In reality, however, mobile code runs only in the sanitized environment of the playground, where user files cannot be mounted and from which only limited network connections are accepted by machines in the protected domain. Our playground thus provides a second level of defense against mobile code that circumvents language-based defenses. The paper presents the design and implementation of a playground for Java 1.1 applets and discusses extensions of it for other forms of mobile code, including Java 1.2.

GOAL: A software tool for assessing biological significance of genes groups

Background: Modern high throughput experimental techniques such as DNA microarrays often result in large lists of genes. Computational biology tools such as clustering are then used to group together genes based on their similarity in expression profiles. Genes in each group are probably functionally related. The functional relevance among the genes in each group is usually characterized by utilizing available biological knowledge in public databases such as Gene Ontology (GO), KEGG pathways, association between a transcription factor (TF) and its target genes, and/or gene networks. Results: We developed GOAL: Gene Ontology AnaLyzer, a software tool specifically designed for the functional evaluation of gene groups. GOAL implements and supports efficient and statistically rigorous functional interpretations of gene groups through its integration with available GO, TF-gene association data, and association with KEGG pathways. In order to facilitate more specific functional characterization of a gene group, we implement three GO-tree search strategies rather than one as in most existing GO analysis tools. Furthermore, GOAL offers flexibility in deployment. It can be used as a standalone tool, a plug-in to other computational biology tools, or a web server application. Conclusion: We developed a functional evaluation software tool, GOAL, to perform functional characterization of a gene group. GOAL offers three GO-tree search strategies and combines its strength in function integration, portability and visualization, and its flexibility in deployment. Furthermore, GOAL can be used to evaluate and compare gene groups as the output from computational biology tools such as clustering algorithms.

An evaluation of the impact of component-based architectures on software reusability

Component-based software development offers a promising solution to the production of complex distributed large-scale software systems. Development for reuse-the production of reusable components-and development with reuse-the production of systems with reusable components-provide the characteristics necessary to break the complexity of large-scale distributed systems. Two criteria for reuse in component-based architectures (CBAs) include inter-operability (focus on development for reuse) and integration (focus on development with reuse). Interoperability concerns how well components interact and integration defines how well components plug and play. The objective of this work is to evaluate the impact of three popular CBAs, namely, Enterprise Java Beans, Distributed interNetwork Architecture, and Object Management Architecture on reusability. A framework is introduced for a systematic and comprehensive analysis and evaluation of CBAs. The proposed framework is used to determine which of the above architectures more effectively addresses integration and interoperability. The results allow businesses to determine which CBA, of the above three, is ideal for reuse for a particular application. Further research opportunities in this area are discussed at the end.
