Cooperative Transmission Based on Decode-and-Forward Relaying with Partial repetition coding

We propose a novel half-duplex decode-and-forward relaying scheme based on partial repetition coding at the relay. In the proposed scheme, if the relay decodes the received message successfully, it re-encodes the message using the same channel code as the one used at the source, but retransmits only a fraction of the codeword. We analyze the proposed scheme and optimize the cooperation level (i.e., the fraction of the message that the relay should transmit). We compare our scheme with conventional repetition in which the relay retransmits the entire decoded message, with parallel coding, and additionally with dynamic decode-and-forward (DDF). We provide a finite-SNR analysis for all the collaborative schemes. The analysis reveals that the proposed partial repetition method can provide a gain of several dB over conventional repetition. It also shows that in general, power allocation is less important provided that one optimally allocates bandwidth. Surprisingly, the proposed scheme is able to achieve the same performance as that of parallel coding for some relay network configurations, but at a much lower complexity.

The throughput performance of cooperative repetition and parallel coding in incremental decode-and-forward is investigated. Four transmission methods are considered: parallel coding with and without distributed space-time coding (PC-ST and PC, respectively);and repetition coding with and without Chase combining at the destination (RC and SC, respectively). The analysis is based on the mutual information seen at the receiver for each scheme. Exact expressions for the outage probability and throughput for all methods are derived. Both ad-hoc and infra-structured relaying scenarios are investigated. Results show that SC can perform very close to RC, PC and PC-ST in terms of throughput, specially in the case of infra-structured relaying or adequate power and rate allocation. The conclusion is that SC would be a better option in practice, since it requires a simpler receiver than PC-ST, PC, and RC.

Grant-free access has been widely studied for ultra-reliable and low-latency communications in 5G networks, wherein contention-based schemes are especially suitable for sporadic traffic. In this paper, we propose a q-Consecutive repetition coding based Contention scheme (q-CRCC). By introducing an activation probability q for each repetition, q-CRCC effectively reduces access collisions for reliable transmissions. Furthermore, we establish an analytical reliability model of q-CRCC and jointly optimize the activation probability and the number of repetitions to improve the transmission reliability of q-CRCC. Besides, the multi-user detection technology is employed to alleviate collision failures. Finally, the accuracy of the obtained analytical reliability model and the advantages of q-CRCC are verified via extensive simulations.

ON THE USE OF repetition coding WITH BINARY DIGITAL MODULATIONS ON MOBILE CHANNELS

repetition, diversity, and single-error-correcting codes are examined for use with binary modulation techniques over a mobile communication fading channel. Both bit-error performance and bandwidth efficiency are considered for phase-shift keyed, differential phase-shift keyed, and frequency-shift keyed modulations. The error-correction capability of repetition coding is considered, and optimum repetition is found. M-tuple diversity with maximum-ratio-combining is then compared with repetition coding both with a single-error-correcting code and without coding. It is found that a minimum of a 10 dB signal-to-noise power ratio is required for an improved performance with repetition code or diversity. The repetition code is about 3 dB inferior to optimal diversity. An optimized design of moderate complexity and bandwidth expansion can be reached with twofold diversity and three repetitions as an inner layer of coding concatenated with an outer single-error-correcting code.

Effect of repetition coding on the BER performance of interleave-division multiple access systems

This paper investigates the bit error rate (BER) performance of interleave-division multiple access (IDMA) schemes to show the effect of repetition coding on the system performance. The considered system is tested in the presence of repetition coding by varying system parameters such as number of simultaneous users, data length, spread length, iteration number, and code rate over additive white Gaussian noise channels. In addition, the performance of the considered system is also illustrated in Rayleigh flat fading channels for a more realistic scenario. Our simulation results show that the BER performance of IDMA systems with repetition coding can achieve significant performance gains over existing uncoded IDMA schemes.

In this letter, we study the secure transmission in the wireless single-antenna time division duplexing (TDD) system when there is a passive eavesdropper. A joint artificial noise and repetition coding scheme is designed, in which the artificial noise can be removed only by the legitimate receiver instead of the eavesdropper. We prove that by using the proposed scheme, the capacity of the wiretap channel is limited by an upper bound, and the achievable secrecy rate can be maximized by power allocation. Finally, simulation results are supplied to corroborate the theoretical analysis.

An optical wireless intensity-modulation direct-detection multiple-input multiple-output communication system is considered. The performance of M-PAM rate-1 direct current offset space-time block codes is studied in terms of average worst-case pairwise error probability (WC-PEP) in quasi-static channels. It is shown that within this code class, the average WC-PEP is minimized by repetition coding (RC) under both electrical and optical individual power constraints, irrespective of channel statistics. This agrees with previously published results related to ON-OFF keying RC. This is further extended to sum power constraints, where it is shown that spatial beamforming minimizes the average WC-PEP within this code class, which simplifies to RC if the channel matrix has independent and indentically distributed columns and a sum electrical power constraint. Under a sum optical power constraint, this also holds true at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), but not at low SNR. Generally, the time dimension of this code class is redundant from an average WC-PEP perspective. Numerical results are provided to support the theoretical findings and to show that the average WC-PEP leads to a good approximation of the actual error probability at high SNR.

We consider Ultra-Wideband Impulse Radio (UWB-IR) Low Data Rate (LDR) applications where a more complex Cluster Head (CH) communicates with many basic Sensors Nodes (SN). At receiver side, noncoherent Energy Detectors (ED) operating at low sampling clock, i.e., below 300kHz, are focused. Drawback is that EDs suffer from significant performance losses with respect to coherent receivers. Pulse repetition coding (PRC) is a known solution to increase receiver performance at the expense of more transmit power. But in LDR systems known PRC is very inefficient due to the low receiver sampling clock. Boosting transmit power is not possible due to Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) power constraints. Hence, we present a modified PRC scheme solving this problem. Modified repetition Coded Binary Pulse Position Modulation (MPRC-BPPM) fully exploits FCC power constraints and for EDs of fixed integration duration is optimal with respect to Bit Error Rate (BER). Furthermore, MPRC-BPPM combined with ED outperforms SRAKE receivers at the expense of more transmit power and makes ED's performance robust against strong channel delay spread variations.

In fading channels to get diversity gain, transmitted data can be repeated in time or frequency. Constellation reaarangement can be used instead of using the same signal constellation for each repeated transmission. In this method, symbols and the points in the signal space can be chosen differently for each one of the diversity branches. On the other hand, power allocation is another method that improves the performance. In this paper, repetition coding that uses signal constellations of 4-pulse amplitude modulation and signal constellation reaarangement are compared for both fixed and optimal power allocation. It is observed that most of the gain is due to constellation rearrangement and advantages of power allocation are limited.
