The manufacturing industry is an ever-changing environment with companies facing increasing external and internal challenges, such as economic crises, technological development and global competition. These challenges create the need for companies to constantly adapt as the environment around them changes. As such, companies are adopting a more proactive approach to manufacturing rather than the usual reactive process, by taking advantage of the ongoing move towards automation and system interconnectivity in the context of Industry 4.0. In this work, we propose an agent-based architecture that presents a solution to projectschedulingproblems, with operation dependent setup time that is resource, material and human-resourceconstrained.

Existing research has focused on solving problems in the area of project management using variety of approaches including search based software engineering approach. The main aim of this research is to evaluate the performance of metaheuristics search techniques such as genetic algorithm, simulated annealing and tabu search in resource allocation problem with project management discipline. This will enable the paper to introduce an alternative approach to solve this resource constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP). The nature of this research is both constructive and experimental therefore software development research methodology will be utilised as a guideline. This study reports a comprehensive set of experiments which evaluate the performance of metaheuristics search techniques. Initial set of experiments were performed over various numerical test function to verify the implementation of search techniques. The next stage of experiments had focused on the scalability of these search techniques. Based on the first two experiments, search techniques were evaluated against a discrete problem to further explore the scalability. Finally, a multi objective test case problem was evaluated which focused around RCPSP. For each of these experiments the parameters were fine-tuned during the design phase of the experiments. Based on the experiments, it was apparent that the metaheuristics search techniques can be used to solve problems in resource allocation within project management discipline. Finally, a comparison analysis strongly suggests that overall simulated annealing had performed better than genetic algorithm and tabu search.

This thesis develops a logic for objectively measuring the required effort that the staff of a maritime headquarters and its embedded maritime operations center must exert to accomplish tasks within a time period. It also provides a way to gain insights into the relative quality of work and risk assumed by them to do so, given the current manning and experience levels of its staff members. We focus on a method for considering staff activities-conducted under the constraints of limited resources by a versatile workforce-as a projectschedulingproblem, and we expand previous projectscheduling methods to include the simultaneous consideration of multiple projects with limited resources. We develop a simulation-based tool, called the Dynamic resource Allocation Analysis Simulation Tool Kit (DRAASTK), that incorporates manager-defined preferences and priority rules to provide task-resource parings, a list of delays and the resources responsible, and resource utilization information. We use these outputs to quantify the risk to mission accomplishment that is accepted when staff levels, training, and equipment are underfunded, and articulate a more realistic picture for the level of effort a staff must exert to support the commander's command and control (C2) mission.

In order to maintain high production rates, electric power as well as manufacturing plants shut down so that maintenance activities can be performed on machines/equipment. These planned shut downs (outages) usually occur at least once a year and are more frequent for plants with older machines/equipment. The major costs associated with outages are cost of materials, labor cost, and loss of production cost. Due to high cost incurred from loss of production, the objective is to schedule maintenance activities such that outage duration is minimized. Since the resources required to perform maintenance activities are very limited, the problem of scheduling the maintenance activities is defined as a resource constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP). In this paper, a solution technique, which consists of a simulated annealing heuristic, is presented for the RCPSP. Significance: This paper presents a unique resource constrained project scheduling problem encountered during maintenance outages at nuclear power plants. Furthermore, the proposed heuristic performs well for large real-world problems.

In recent years we have evidenced an extensive effort in the development of computer communication networks, which have deeply integrated in human being's everyday life. One of the important aspects of the network design process is the topological design problem involved in establishing a communication network. However, with the increase of the problem scale, the conventional techniques are facing the challenge to effectively and efficiently solve those complicated network design problems. In this article, we give a brief survey on our recent research works of network design problems by using genetic algorithms (GAs), such as, multistage process planning problem, fixed charge transportation problem, minimum spanning tree problem, centralized network design, and local area network design, shortest path problem, minimum cost maximum flow problem, and optimal schedulingproblems based on network topology. All these problems are illustrated from the point of genetic representation encoding skill and the genetic operators with hybrid strategies. Numerical experiments show the effectiveness and efficiency of such kind of GA-based approach.
