Water quality monitoring in a slightly-polluted inland water body through remote sensing-Case study of the Guanting Reservoir in Beijing,China

This study focused on the water quality of the Guanting Reservoir,a possible auxiliary drinking water source for *** a remote sensing(RS)approach and using Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper(TM)data,water quality retrieval models were established and analyzed for eight common water quality variables,including algae content,turbidity,and concentrations of chemical oxygen demand,total nitrogen,ammonia nitrogen,nitrate nitrogen,total phosphorus,and dissolved *** results show that there exists a statistically significant correlation between each water quality variable and remote sensing data in a slightly-polluted inland water body with fairly weak spectral *** an appropriate method of sampling pixel digital numbers and multiple regression algorithms,retrieval of the algae content,turbidity,and nitrate nitrogen concentration was achieved within 10% mean relative error,concentrations of total nitrogen and dissolved phosphorus within 20%,and concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus within 30%.On the other hand,no effective retrieval method for chemical oxygen demand was *** accuracies were acceptable for the practical application of routine monitoring and early warning on water quality safety with the support of precise traditional *** results show that performing the most traditional routine monitoring of water quality by RS in relatively clean inland water bodies is possible and effective.

Microwave emissivity over ocean in all-weather conditions: Validation using WINDSAT and airborne GPS dropsondes

Emissivity spectra computed by the FASTEM-3 model using global positioning system dropsonde wind as input are compared to emissivity retrieved from stringently coincident WINDSAT measurements, using a variational approach. This is done in both clear and rainy conditions to assess the validity of both the emissivity model and the retrieval technique in all conditions. Results of this comparison are presented for vertical and horizontal polarizations, in moderate to high wind conditions. In particular, a slope difference is found, and its potential sources are discussed in this paper.

The new algorithms for retrieval of total atmospheric water vapor content (Q) and total cloud liquid water content (W) from satellite microwave radiometer data, applicable for the Arctic Basin. These algorithms are based on the Neural Networks (NNs) regression technique employed for the inversion of a Radiative Transfer Equation (RTE). For the algorithm development the numerical integration of RTE was carried out for the channel characteristics of a Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E), and brightness temperatures (T-B) were simulated for non-precipitating conditions over the open ocean. Sets of sea surface temperatures (Ts), surface winds and radiosonde reports collected by Russian research vessels served as input data for the integration. Only data with Ts less than 15 degrees C were selected for algorithm development. Simulated radiometer noise was added to the calculated values of TB. Once developed, using theoretically simulated values of T-B, the Q algorithms were then validated both for SSM/I and AMSR-E retrievals using satellite radiometric measurements collocated in space and time with polar station radiosonde data. The resulting SSM retrieval error proved to be 1.1 kg/m(2), AMSR-E retrieval error - 0.9 kg/m(2). Considered case study was the polar low in the Norwegian Sea occurred 30-31 January 2008. NOAA AVHRR, Terra and Aqua MODIS images, QuikSCAT-retrieved wind fields, Envisat ASAR images as well as weather maps were used as ancillary data to passive microwave retrievals to study this phenomenon.

Numerical algorithm for the retrieval of spatial coherence properties of partially coherent beams from transverse intensity measurements

A novel algorithm for the retrieval of the spatial mutual coherence function of the optical field of a light beam in the quasimonochromatic approximation is presented. The algorithm only requires that the intensity distribution is known in a finite number of transverse planes along the beam. The retrieval algorithm is based on the observation that a partially coherent field can be represented as an ensemble of coherent fields. Each field in the ensemble is propagated with coherent methods between neighboring planes, and the ensemble is then subjected to amplitude restrictions, much in the same way as in conventional phase recovery algorithms for coherent fields. The proposed algorithm is evaluated both for one- and two-dimensional fields using numerical simulations. (C) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Assessment of the horizontal resolution of retrieval products derived from MIPAS observations

We report the results of a study aimed at the assessment of the trade-off between precision and horizontal resolution of the retrieval products of MIPAS (Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding) operating onboard the ENVIronmental SATellite. By exploiting different observation setups we could perform the study by acting on both the retrieval and the sampling grids. Our results are compared with those previously obtained on simulated observations [Appl. Opt. 43, 1-11 (2004)]. We show that the horizontal sampling of the atmosphere operated by the spectrometer cannot be pushed beyond some limits without inducing unacceptable correlations among the retrieved profiles. These correlations show-up only when using a two-dimensional retrieval algorithm and can be evaluated through the instabilities that they trigger in the horizontal distribution of the retrieval products. In order to reduce these instabilities we compare the strategy of degrading the retrieval grid with the strategy of applying horizontal regularization. We discuss the different trade-off between precision and spatial resolution connected with the two strategies. The method adopted in this study, is applicable to any orbiting limb sounder measuring along the orbit track. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Reducing the discrepancy between ASTER and MODIS land surface temperature products

Human-induced global warming has significantly increased the importance of satellite monitoring of land surface temperature (LST) on a global scale. The MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) provides a 1-km resolution LST product with almost daily coverage of the Earth, invaluable to both local and global change studies. The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) provides a LST product with a high spatial resolution of 90-m and a 16-day recurrent cycle, simultaneously acquired at the same height and nadir view as MODIS. ASTER and MODIS are complementary in resolution, offering a unique opportunity for scale-related studies. ASTER and MODIS LST have been widely used but the errors in LST were mostly disregarded. Correction of ASTER-to-MODIS LST discrepancies is essential for studies reliant upon the joint use of these sensors. In this study, we compared three correction approaches: the Wan et al.'s approach, the refined Wan et al.'s approach, and the generalized split window (GSW) algorithm based approach. The Wan et al.'s approach corrects the MODIS 1-km LST using MODIS 5-km LST. The refined approach modifies the Wan et al.'s approach through incorporating ASTER emissivity and MODIS 5-km data. The GSW algorithm approach does not use MODIS 5-km but only ASTER emissivity data. We examined the case over a semi-arid terrain area for the part of the Loess Plateau of China. All the approaches reduced the ASTER-to-MODIS LST discrepancy effectively. With terrain correction, the original ASTER-to-MODIS LST difference reduced from 2.7 +/- 1.28 K to -0.1 +/- 1.87 K for the Wan et al.'s approach, 0.2 +/- 1.57 K for the refined approach, and 0.1 +/- 1.33 K for the GSW algorithm based approach. Among all the approaches, the GSW algorithm based approach performed best in terms of mean, standard deviation, root mean square root, and correlation coefficient.

Dust event detection from lidar measurements

Active remote sensing systems such as Lidars (LIght Detection And Ranging) can detect clouds and aerosols. Use of aerosols as tracers for the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) allows the observation of its vertical profile and time evolution. Information on the vertical profile of meteorological parameters is essential for scientific investigations, climate modeling and for long time pollution monitoring. Another atmospheric event that can be identified by lidar measurements is the aerosol intrusion in the free troposphere. This paper studies a special case of aerosol intrusion determined during a campaign for PBL height characteristic of Bucharest atmosphere. Because we can not specify the aerosol type from elastic backscatter Lidar signal, a model data prognosis and air masses backward trajectories have been used to further investigate our experimental results. The lidar system at INOE, (LISA) is based on a Nd:YAG laser working at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength and at 532 nm second harmonic and delivering pulses with high repetition rate. The system can detect micron size aerosols from long distances (up to 10 km), with a very good spatial resolution (3 m).
