Comparing face-to-face with online training for occupational therapists in advising on fitness for work: Protocol for the CREATE study

Introduction Occupational therapists play a key role in advising on fitness for work;however, there is a concern that they lack knowledge and confidence in using the Allied Health Professions health and work report (formerly the Allied Health Professions advisory fitness for work report), developed in the United Kingdom. Comparing a reusable learning object with face-to-face training for occupational therapists in advising on fitness for work (CREATE) compares face-to-face training with online training for occupational therapists in completing the Allied Health Professions health and work report. Method A mixed methods study. Phase 1, occupational therapists will co-design an online training resource. A standardised face-to-face group-based training session will also be developed based on the same content. Phase 2, a feasibility study will be conducted. Thirty occupational therapists will either attend face-to-face group training or access the online resource. Data on self-reported knowledge and confidence in using the Allied Health Professions health and work report will be collected at baseline, 1 week and 8 weeks post-training. Feedback on the training will be collected by interview and, for the online resource, using an online tool. Results Quantitative results will be predominantly analysed descriptively. If appropriate, between-group responses will be compared using the Mann-Whitney test. Qualitative findings will be analysed thematically. Conclusion CREATE will have made a significant contribution to the debate around appropriate training methods in advising on fitness for work.

ELSE: an ontology-based system integrating semantic search and e-learning technologies

ELSE (E-learning for the Semantic ECM) is an ontology-based system which integrates semantic search methodologies and e-learning technologies. It has been developed within a project of the CME (Continuing Medical Education) program - ECM (Educazione Continua nella Medicina) for Italian participants. ELSE allows the creation of e-learning courses which are customized according to the needs and learning preferences of the user. It relies on a reference domain ontology and teaching multimedial interactive modules, referred to as reusable learning objects (RLOs), which are annotated according to the concepts of the ontology. The SemSim semantic search method allows the selection of the set of RLOs that satisfy the user request at best in efficient way. This set is successively reorganized according to the learning preferences of the user. ELSE has been validated and experimented in the domain of osteoporosis, and the overall judgment about it is very positive, both in terms of usability and effectiveness of customization.

Internet connectivity is one of the fundamental requirements for a successful mobile learning environment. However, within the context of Africa, availability and access, let alone cost, still pose a great challenge in higher education, especially in distance learning. Consequently, there arises a dire need for a native mobile learning application framework that would serve as an alternative to web-based learning environments in localized contexts such as Africa, where the problems of internet connectivity and bandwidth remain untackled. However, little body of knowledge exists on how such native application frameworks, which leverage the mobile device's underlying hardware resources and rich user interfaces (UIs) in offering a heightened learning user experience (UX), can be designed and implemented. As a result, this thesis sets out to bridge this gap by proposing a Native Mobile Multimedia learning Application (NMMLA) Framework, implemented on the Android platform by using a systematic approach we called "Content Flow Algorithm Tree," which can be leveraged by mobile learning application developers in developing native applications for various higher education courses, especially in science and engineering. The framework is a one-page-setup and do-it-yourself toolkit and library that will facilitate the development of NMMLAs by reducing deployment time or time to market. Basically, the framework supports five (5) types of multimedia learning content- images, Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), audio, video and simulation-aimed at meeting the different needs of learners with different learning preferences. The framework provides a number of key features, which include theme, course, quiz and simulation menus; listview and tabview render modes; and Search and Help utilities. This paper details the process of how two reusable learning objects (RLOs) were created for hospitality management undergraduates at University College Birmingham (UCB). The rationale for this project developed from the teaching team who decided that an element of online content would be appropriate to support students who were required to use an MS Excel spreadsheet to monitor finances during the planning stages of managing a themed dinner. The RLOs created were screen-capture graphic files with accompanying audio commentary that showed how to input income and expense figures into a spreadsheet. The purpose of the RLO was to provide a resource which students could access and watch independently as necessary. During the planning weeks prior to the function, the student finance manager is required to input and update budgeted figures received from colleagues who adopted other management roles. The student finance manager must input the actual figures a week after the dinner has taken place. The spreadsheet is used to analyse variances that have occurred between the budgeted and actual figures and this forms part of the assessment. Scheduled face-to-face tutorials each week provided students with the opportunity to discuss with the tutor any issues they had with the spreadsheet. Despite this, it was found that students did not always admit to fully understanding all aspects of the spreadsheet or which figures to put in what cell, this despite comments being attached to many of the spreadsheet cells and a session devoted to how to use the spreadsheet. The teaching team decided to create and trial an online resource that would meet the need of providing further support to students about how to use the spreadsheet. Another purpose of the RLO was that by students familiarising themselves with how to use the spreadsheet, this could promote independent learning which we try to instil in our students. Although our health and social care (HSC) students have some experience of simple charts, such as pie and bar, and some intuition of histograms, they do not appear to have much knowledge or understanding about box and whisker plots and their relation to the data they are describing or to other charts, eg histograms. The boxplot is a versatile charting tool, useful for presenting data from surveys and any other projects, where a reasonable quantity of data has been collected. An opportunity arose with funding under the Centres for Excellence in Teaching and learning (CETL) initiative, sponsored by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), to create a reusable learning object (RLO) to describe, explore, and interpret boxplots, especially in relation to their data and summary statistics, with links to interprofessional (IP) learning, as this was the main remit of the CETL established at this university. The RLO is aimed at both undergraduate and post-graduate HSC students, who would be able to use the resource flexibly, to augment their limited exposure to statistical techniques, and add to their appreciation of IP learning and working. The RLO includes animation and opportunities for students to interact, for example to experiment with changing data values to see the resulting effect on the chart. Links are made to existing websites with historical detail for further exploration if wanted. Existing, available 'real' data, collected as part of research projects concerning (IP) learning, as well as generated data, is used as illustrative material. This paper explores some of the issues raised during the creation of the RLO, and discusses limited feedback from users. Issues raised include the working of the project team, delivery platform, copyright and intellectual property rights and software incompatibilities. We describe the experiences of three University projects that use a style of physical, non-computer based activity to enthuse and teach school students computer science concepts. We show that this kind of activity is effective as an outreach and teaching resource even when reused across different age/ability ranges, in lecture and workshop formats and for delivery by different people. We introduce the concept of a reusable Outreach object (ROO) that extends reusable learning objects. and argue for a community effort in developing a repository of such objects.

Reusing learning materials is an essential issue in developing e-learning content. For this purpose, the concept of reusable learning objects (RLOs) has been developed by different organizations, and recently RLOs' metadata has been standardized to push up their reusability to its extent. In this paper, we focus on our vision of RLOs that have standard metadata and are stored in repositories. To enable advanced retrieval and browsing operations on RLOs' repositories, we have developed the LORIN model. This new model is based essentially on an Inference Network Retrieval model which is applied generally in Information Retrieval applications. LORIN model has been implemented and tested on a repository of learning objects that we have developed for pre-university curricula.

To be effective, a learning process must be adapted to the learner's context. Such a context should be described at least from pedagogical, technological and learning perspectives. Current e-learning approaches either fail to provide learning experiences within rich contexts, thus hampering the learning process, or provide extremely contextualized content that is highly coupled with context information, barring their reuse in some other context. In this paper we decouple context as much as possible from content so that the latter can be reused and adapted to context changes. This approach extends the LOM standard by enriching content context, thereby allowing e-learning platforms to dynamically compose, reuse and adapt educative content provided by third parties (learning objects). Three context models are presented together with a multiagent-based e-learning platform that composes and adapts extended learning objects according to learner's context changes.
