Real-time Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Cruise Route Optimization for road segment Surveillance using Decomposition Algorithm

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was introduced for nondeterministic traffic monitoring, and a real-time UAV cruise route planning approach was proposed for road segment surveillance. First, critical road segments are defined so as to identify the visiting and unvisited road segments. Then, a UAV cruise route optimization model is established. Next, a decomposition-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (DMEA) is proposed. Furthermore, a case study with two scenarios and algorithm sensitivity analysis are conducted. The analysis result shows that DMEA outperforms other two commonly used algorithms in terms of calculation time and solution quality. Finally, conclusions and recommendations on UAV-based traffic monitoring are presented.

Detecting and positioning of traffic incidents via video-based analysis of traffic states in a road segment

Non-recurrent traffic incidents (accidents, stalled vehicles and spilled loads) often bring about traffic congestion and even secondary accidents. Detecting and positioning them quickly and accurately has important significance for early warning, timely incident-disposal and speedy congestion-evacuation. This study proposes a video-based detecting and positioning method by analysing distribution characteristics of traffic states in a road segment. Each lane in the monitored segment is divided into a cluster of cells. Traffic parameters in each cell, including flow rate, average travel speed and average space occupancy, are obtained by detecting and tracking traffic objects (vehicles and spilled loads). On the basis of the parameters, traffic states in the cells are judged via a fuzzy-identification method. For each congested cell, a feature vector is constructed by taking its state together with states of its upstream and downstream neighbouring cells in the same lane. Then, a support vector machine classifier is trained to detect incident point. If a cell is judged to be corresponding to an incident point at least for two successive time periods, an incident is detected and its position is calculated based on the identity number of the cell. Experiments prove the efficiency and practicability of the proposed method.

Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) can provide strong support for intelligent transportation systems and Internet services. How to disseminate data to vehicular nodes has been always at the core of VANET technologies. In this paper, we consider data dissemination via Named Data Networking (NDN), which is a new and promising Internet technology to realize content centric networking. NDN can route and forward data according to data content (or ID) rather than the address/location of the data, so that it can disseminate and share data more efficiently. Our work focuses on how to cope with the mobility of vehicular nodes, which is not considered in original NDN. Different from existing NDN for vehicular environments, we propose to establish data dissemination route using road segment information rather than node information. Such a new approach can avoid the effect of topology changes on data routes so as to keep data routes stable. A road segment route is instantiated as routes of nodes upon data forwarding demands. The mechanism to realize such an instantiation is the major challenge addressed in our design. Simulations via ndnSIM clearly show that our design performs much better than existing ones.

IS-roadDet: road Vector Graph Detection With Intersections and road segments From High-Resolution Remote Sensing Imagery

Extracting road vector graphs with high accuracy from high-resolution remote sensing imagery presents a significant challenge. The prior end-to-end algorithms have typically modeled the road graph as a general graph structure with vertices and edges, denoted as G=(V,E), which is a standard approach in graph generation tasks. However, the traditional G=(V,E) graph representation with vertices and edges, utilizing very small edge units, can conflict with the road network's geometric structure and the inherent features of road instances, leading to issues such as false positives and disconnected roads. In this article, the IS-roadDet framework is proposed to generate a road vector graph with intersections (I) and road segments (S), denoted as G=(I,S), which leverages the minimum road topology unit features of road to improve road topology. Compared to G=(V,E), instead of detecting a large number of vertices to maintain the road topology connectivity, G=(I,S) uses road segments with minimum road units to avoid false positives. In IS-roadDet, the intersection and road segment detector (ISDetector) is introduced to detect intersections and road segments as independent instance objects with joint learning, and an intersection connectivity strategy (ICS) is designed to establish connectivity between road segments with intersections. Empirical experiments conducted on the SpaceNet3 and Sat2Graph datasets substantiated the superior performance of the proposed road segment modeling method. Traffic paradox on a road segment based on a cellular automaton: Impact of lane-changing behavior

The traffic paradox "faster is slower" does not always apply. To study when and where it is valid, a simulation for a real road segment is performed using a novel cellular automaton. This simulation is used to analyze the change in global traffic flow status during free lanechanging behavior under general urban traffic conditions. The impact of lane-changing behavior is quantified into two aspects, time and space, and are described by average delay and transitable flow, respectively. Then surfaces are obtained, which adopt the arriving probability of vehicles and the green ratio as dual independent variables. Thus by the comparison of two surfaces, free lane-changing and straight proceeding, the horizontal projection of the intersecting lines is solved. Finally, the range of occurrence and reasons for the paradox are analyzed. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Estimating operating speed for county road segments–Evidence from Italy

road segments using traffic markings to separate the vehicle lane and the adjacent bicycle lane are widely adopted on urban roads. Bicycles' illegal lane-changing behavior (ILC) is commonly observed on such road segments, resulting in severe influences of traffic efficiency and bringing hidden dangers. However, existing models disregard different categories of ILC and heterogeneities of ILC between electric bikes (e-bikes) and regular bikes (r-bikes), which has limitations in representing the realistic ILC. To address these disadvantages and understand how heterogeneities affect the ILC, this paper analyzes the behavioral characteristics of ILC using field data and proposes a new cellular automaton (CA) model. Corresponding rules are set for different categories of ILC in the model, and simultaneously the bicycle heterogeneities of ILC are also considered in rules-making. Simulation results indicate that as the proportion of e-bikes increases, the frequency of ILC increases. Furthermore, vehicle volume decreases due to the occurrence of ILC, and the effect is more evident with a higher proportion of e-bikes. Findings of the study can help us better understand the ILC, and the proposed simulation model is useful for pre-evaluating unimplemented designs for the mixed traffic road segment. Assessment of pedestrian's road crossing behaviors and developing a model to predict road crossing speed on zebra-marked crossings

Zebra marked crosswalk is the most common types of road crossings on urban and rural streets. According to previous studies, accidents are frequently occurred on and around marked crosswalk. Assessment on crosswalk utilization, pedestrian crossing speed and modeling the crossing speed were the main goals of this study. The road crosser data were collected by video recording for the sake of its convenience. road-crosser behaviors were extracted manually. Three road segments of 15 m length with zebra marked crosswalks were selected as a representative location for this study. The video was recorded in three different working days and two times per day, that represented high and low pedestrian movements. The duration for recording and observation was 15 min per segment. There were 494 pedestrians (37%) observed while crossing illegally from 1350 road crosser pedestrians. The extracted data were analyzed to determine the influence of human factors on crosswalk utilization and crossing speed on 323 pedestrians. The results showed that human factors did not influence the crosswalk utilization preference of pedestrians. However, human factors such as gender, number of elders, crossing group, activities and baggage had significant influence on the road crossing speed. A predictive model was developed using multiple linear regression for crossing speed.

Exploring the impacts of street layout on the frequency of pedestrian crashes: A micro-level study

Introduction: Pedestrian safety has become a critical issue since walking is increasingly promoted as a sustainable transport mode. However, pedestrians are vulnerable to severe injury and mortality in road crashes. Therefore, it is important to understand the factors that affect the safety of pedestrians. This paper investigates the impacts of street layout on the frequency of pedestrian crashes by examining the interactive pattern of built environment, crossing facilities, and road characteristics. Method: A surrogate exposure variable of pedestrian crashes at the road-segment level is proposed by considering the locations of crossing facilities, distribution of points of interest (POIs), road characteristics, and pedestrian activities. A network-based kernel density technique is used to identify the pedestrian crash risk at the road segment level. Bayesian spatial models based on different exposure variables are employed and compared. Results: The results suggest that models using the surrogate exposure of pedestrian crashes provide better model fit than the ones simply using the density of pedestrians. It is also found that the presence of POIs is related to a higher risk of pedestrian-vehicle crash. In addition, a significantly higher number of pedestrian crashes are found to occur on segments with more bus stops and metro stations. Results also show that the longer the distance between the crossing facilities and road segments, the more pedestrian crashes are observed. Conclusions: The proposed aggregated indicator can provide more efficient exposure and higher prediction accuracy than the density of pedestrians. Besides, the POIs, crossing facilities, and road types were all significantly related to pedestrian crashes. Practical Applications: Our results suggest that the locations of POIs and transport facilities should be planned in a way that can decrease the number of road crossed or guide pedestrians to take safe crossing path. This study proposes a method of assessing the risk of hydrogen transport via road considering spatial features of a transport route, based on a geographic information system (GIS);a case study of Yokohama, Japan was considered in the assessment. The risk determined by multiplying the frequency of accidents with their consequences was estimated using road segments constituting the entire transport route. The effects of road structure, traffic volumes, and population information were reflected in the estimation of the risk for each road segment by using GIS. In the case study, the risks of transport route were assessed at an acceptable level under risk criteria. The results indicated that the risks fluctuated according to the road segments, indicating that spatial features of a transport route significantly affect the corresponding risks. Analyzing this importance indicates the transport routing to avoid high risk road segments as countermeasures.
