The design and deployment of networked embedded systems is challenging. In particular, the environment in which the system operates has a severe impact on the final performance. Existing tools trade generality for specificity with arbitrary setups, e.g., in simulation, or specific configurations, e.g., in public testbeds. As a result, the peculiar effect of the target deployment scenario on the system performance can only be experienced by hand. Optimising and adapting the system to the operational environment becomes then a trial and error, impractical challenge. We introduce MOTION, a hybrid modelling technique able to characterise indoor wireless communication in the target environment from measurements and descriptions, e.g., maps, of the deployment area. By exploiting all available knowledge, our model is able to increase the achieved accuracy by up to 35% in our primary evaluation scenario with respect to conventional approaches. The computed models can then support traditional design and analysis tools in investigating the impact of arbitrary displacements of devices in the target environment. E.g., by controlling the relocation of a single node based on the information provided by the model, we were able to reduce the latency of a typical application by up to 21.4%. Ultimately, our work allows situated network optimisation of wireless systems where devices can be freely moved in the environment and the corresponding impact on the network performance can be estimated beforehand.

Low power wide area (LPWA) networks are power-constrained and work on industrial, scientific, medical (ISM) bands. The scheme of clear channel assessment (CCA) has a great influence on network performance, and the most important characteristics of CCA methods for LPWA networks are high detection probability and power saving. For different wireless networks, carrier sensing (CS), one of the CCA methods, is various due to respective modulations and wireless techniques. In this paper, we modify some parameters of CS in IEEE 802.15.4 to be suitable for LPWA networks. Also, we take the particular case of the LPWA networks based on IEEE 802.15.4k standard to simulate the performance of popular CCA methods (Energy Detection and Carrier Sensing). By analyzing the performance of CCA methods, some conclusions are drawn about how to select an appropriate CCA method for LPWA networks according to channel qualities.

Achieving high Quality of Service (QoS) over wireless multihop networks calls for enhanced routing/scheduling algorithms. Towards this direction it has been shown in the literature that the Greedy Backpressure algorithm which combines routing based on greedy hyperbolic embedding with backpressure scheduling, achieves to improve delay while remains throughput optimal. However, the performance of such an approach is significantly affected by the selection of the corresponding spanning tree used for greedily embedding the network into the hyperbolic space. Our work aims exactly at addressing this issue, that is the construction of an appropriate spanning tree that improves the cost of the paths used by the Greedy Backpressure approach, when considering a more generic weighted network graph modeling. The latter allows us to take into consideration the link costs in the routing process, which in turn may result in the simultaneous improvement of multiple performance metrics. To address the problem under consideration, we propose a coalition formation game framework among the network nodes, so that they can decide cooperatively for the spanning tree, via trading their value functions designed to depend on the link weights. We prove that the stable outcome of the coalitional game is a spanning tree of the network, and study through simulations the induced improvement in the network performance. Furthermore, we extend the framework for a scenario with multiple costs on each link through multi-tree hyperbolic embedding.

MANET routing protocols have many vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malicious nodes to disrupt the normal routing behavior. In this paper, we present a vulnerability analysis of AODV. We simulate four routing attacks to analyse their impacts on AODV protocol using NS-2 network simulator. These attacks are blackhole, grayhole, selfish and flooding attacks. The blackhole and flooding attacks have a severe impact on the network performance while the selfish and grayhole attacks have less significant effect on the network performance.

Content-Centric networking (CCN) is an emerging networking paradigm being considered as a possible replacement for the current IP-based host-centric Internet infrastructure. CCN focuses on content distribution, which is arguably not well served by IP. Named-Data networking (NDN) is an example of CCN. NDN is also an active research project under the NSF Future Internet Architectures (FIA) program. FIA emphasizes security and privacy from the outset and by design. To be a viable Internet architecture, NDN must be resilient against current and emerging threats. This paper focuses on distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks;in particular we address interest flooding, an attack that exploits key architectural features of NDN. We show that an adversary with limited resources can implement such attack, having a significant impact on network performance. We then introduce Poseidon: a framework for detecting and mitigating interest flooding attacks. Finally, we report on results of extensive simulations assessing proposed countermeasure.

Unequivocally, one of the main challenges of the arising wireless world is to support the QoS-demanding services. However, the solutions that will be considered should not only take into account the optimization of the network performance, but should also be energy efficient both for the operator and the end-user. This paper presents the concept of Opportunistic networks (ONs) as an energy efficient method to exploit wireless networks. The case studied in this work comprises a macro base station which faces congestion issues. The proposed solution will offload the traffic from a proportion of the macro-terminals to nearby femtocells, through the creation of an ON. Therefore, the femto-terminals will operate to lower power levels leading to less energy consumption and battery savings. In addition, femtocells will operate to the minimum transmission power that is needed in order to serve the users resulting in operational expenditure savings. Results from simulations are provided to confirm the proposed solution.

We study a dynamic WDM network with nonideal components in the physical layer which uses an impairment-aware routing and wavelength (RWA) algorithm for connection provisioning. We investigate the reduction in blocking probability (BP) by utilizing service Level Agreement (SLA) metric i.e. setup delay tolerance during connection provisioning. Furthermore, we explore the improvement in the network performance by efficiently utilizing the knowledge of the connections holding-time, another metric of SLA. Keeping in mind that BP reduction can be obtained by set-up delay tolerance [1] our focus is to investigate how set-up delay tolerance combined with holding-time awareness can improve BP performance caused by physical impairment. Our simulation results confirm that significant improvement can be achieved by holding-time aware connection provisioning compared to the unaware holding-time case. Moreover as expected, set-up delay tolerance can reduce BP even without knowledge of connections holding-time.

This paper concentrates on the proper use of fountain codes for the transmission of sporadic data in a wireless sensor network (WSN). Fountain codes offer great perspectives for the self-organization of WSNs: they self adapt to the channel error rate without control packets. Deploying fountain codes in a WSN raises two problems. First, the size of the data transmitted by a sensor is small in comparison to the size usually considered with fountain codes. Second, WSNs mostly rely on multi-hop transmissions. It implies a non null transmission duration for the end-to-end acknowledgement of the reception. During this period of time, the source is still transmitting useless packets, creating a specific overhead we define as the overflow. This paper brings the overflow problem to light and analyses its impact on the network performance. Our work can be viewed as the networking counterpart of the results presented by Pakzad et al. at ISIT 2005 applied to WSNs.
