An efficient approach to building image-based road network model

The recent advances in positioning technology facilitate the acquisition of high frequency and accuracy locational information of moving objects. Meanwhile, the locational information can be used to augment data collected with other sensors. One of them is to collect geo-referenced images in a road network and replay them continuously in a virtual-reality fashion to make users feel as if they are driving a car to explore the network in a virtual tour. With this background, an image-based road network model is defined. Trajectories and images collected with high-accuracy positioning devices and digital video camera, respectively, compose the model's input. Two algorithms are proposed to process the input and complete the model. With this model as the fundamental part, a prototype is developed to implement a virtual tour in a road network. In the virtual tour, instead of following a fixed route, users may decide the route choice and speed freely. Different from most existing methods, with the favour of advanced positioning technologies, the proposed approach and algorithms can facilitate building the image-based network model as well as developing the prototype efficiently and conveniently. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group.

The complexity of a real road network structure of a city and the variability of its real traffic information make a city's intelligent transportation system (ITS) hard to meet the needs of the city's vehicle navigation. This paper has proposed a simplified real-time road network model which can take into account the influence of intersection delay on the guidance for vehicles but avoid the calculation of intersection delay and troublesome collection of a city's traffic data. Based on the new model, a navigation system has been presented, which can plan a dynamic optimal path for a vehicle according to the real-time traffic data received periodically from the city's traffic center. A simulated experiment has been given. Compared with previous real-time road network models, the new model is much simpler and more effective on the calculation of vehicle navigation.

The establishment of road network model is critical for path planning in an intelligent transportation system (ITS) or vehicle navigation system. This paper have proposed a new road network model which is simple in description but can take delay time (including red-time delay) at various intersections (including rotary or ring intersection, cloverleaf intersection), turn exhibition and one-way or two-way street into account, and can avoid a complicate calculation for the delay time. An improved Dijkstra algorithm based on the new model was given. The simulation results show that the new model can work well and the improved algorithm is efficient.

How to model a dynamic road network has great practical significance in a vehicle navigation system. This paper has proposed a simplified time-division based on road network model which implicitly takes into account the delay time at various intersections, the degree of a road congestion and the different road quality, but avoids a complicated calculation and collection for these traffic data. An improved Dijkstra algorithm based on the new model has also been given. The simulation results show that the model can work well and the algorithm is efficient.

Aiming to predict the charging and discharging power of electric vehicles, a Power Prediction method for Electric Vehicle is proposed by considering their real-time State of Charge (SOC) values and desired SOC values. Firstly, targeting weak links in urban power grids, a road network model was constructed based on Markov chains and a spatiotemporal travel chain for electric vehicles, whereby real geographic coordinates of urban areas serve as the research subject. Then a model was established for the charging and discharging load of electric vehicles at weak links in the power grid. Finally, based on real-time State of Charge (SOC) values and desired SOC values, the charging and discharging power of electric vehicles was predicted. The proposed method for predicting the charging and discharging power of electric vehicles can not only mitigate the impact of a large number of electric vehicles connecting to the grid on its weak links and improve the stability of the distribution network, but also significantly meet the actual charging power demand of urban electric vehicles. Through the study of cases, the effectiveness of the method was validated.

Optimal path finding algorithms based on SLSD road network model

A solution to compute the optimal path based on a single-line-single-directional（SLSD）road network model is *** the traditional road network model,in the SLSD conceptual model,being single-directional and single-line style,a road is no longer a linkage of road nodes but abstracted as a network ***,a road node is abstracted as the linkage of two ordered single-directional *** model can describe turn restrictions,circular roads,and other real scenarios usually described using a *** a computing framework for optimal path finding（OPF）is *** is proved that classical Dijkstra and A algorithms can be directly used for OPF computing of any real-world road networks by transferring a super-graph to an SLSD ***,using Singapore road network data,the proposed conceptual model and its corresponding optimal path finding algorithms are validated using a two-step optimal path finding algorithm with a pre-computing strategy based on the SLSD road network.

Accelerated and Refined Lane-Level Route-Planning Method Based on a New road network model for Autonomous Vehicle Navigation

Lane-level route planning is a critical issue for a lane-level navigation system for autonomous vehicles. Current route-planning methods mainly focus on the road level and applying them directly to search for lane-level routes results in a reduction in search efficiency. In addition, previously developed lane-level methods lack consideration for vehicle characteristics and adaptability to multiple road network structures. To solve this issue, this study proposes an accelerated and refined lane-level route-planning algorithm based on a new lane-level road network model. First, five sub-layers are designed to refine the internal structure of the divided road and intersection areas so that the model can express multiple variations in road network structures. Then, a multi-level route-planning algorithm is designed for sequential planning at the road level, lane group level, lane section level, and lane level to reduce the search space and significantly improve routing efficiency. Last, an optimal lane determination algorithm considering traffic rules, vehicle characteristics, and optimization objectives is developed at the lane level to find the optimal lanes on roads with different configurations, including those with a constant or variable number of lanes while satisfying traffic rules and vehicle characteristics. Tests were performed on simulated road networks and a real road network. The results demonstrate the algorithm's better adaptability to changing road network structures and vehicle characteristics compared with past hierarchical route planning, and its higher efficiency compared with direct route planning, past hierarchical route planning, and the Apollo route-planning method, which can better support autonomous vehicle navigation.

With the rapid urban development and traffic rules increasingly complex, how to establish and express in detail the real traffic network model is important. This paper based on Lane concept and geometric data with the Urban road, carries out and build up the Urban road network model related traffic attributes from road centerline to Carriageway, until the microscopic lane, reflects the multi-level traffic attributes characteristics and topological relations of road network in road centerline, Carriageway and lane. Finally, This paper build the road network of Ganzhou city in Jiangxi according to road data, which can meet the microscopic traffic simulation of the route guidance, traffic assignment and so on.

It is a challenge in the research field of GIS-T and ITS to design a road network model that can well express the full range of transportation information. The existing Multi-hierarchy road network models often have some defaults, such as repeated storage of data, high degree of redundancy, difficult to analyze network, etc. Based on the analysis of image pyramid model and road feature hierarchy, a road network pyramid model has been proposed in this paper. This model has the adaptive ability to express multi-scale information and can descript road network the most detailedly with comprehensive road characteristic of all hierarchies. Low degree of redundancy of spatial and topologic data is another advance of the model. So this model is more suitable for multi-hierarchy analysis of road network.

Microscopic traffic simulation focuses on each single vehicle to study traffic flow behaviors. How to build an effective road network model is a challenge when it is applied to a large network. According to the characteristics of micro-simulation, the road network model must be capable to take lanes into account as the minimum simulated unit, including multi-level network elements, and represents the topological relationships among these elements accurately. On the basis of existing models, this article attempts to establish a road network data model for microscopic traffic simulation, and thereafter a simulation prototype is implemented to examine the applicability of the proposed model.
