Adoption of Artificial Intelligence in Cybersecurity for Organizations: Barriers and roadmap

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to optimize and automate the cybersecurity processes in organizations and provide decision support to security analysts. While the benefits offered by AI in cybersecurity are considerable, many organizations still struggle to implement it. This study helps closing this gap by conducting a thorough analysis of the main barriers to the adoption of AI-enhanced cybersecurity solutions in organizations. The barriers are identified through a literature review of existing research and classified using the TOE (Technical, Organizational, and Environmental) framework. A coherent roadmap for addressing these barriers and successfully implementing the solutions is also presented. The study provides practitioners with valuable insights into the key barriers that inhibit AI in cybersecurity adoption at the organization level and helps organizations to prepare for adoption and make informed decisions to accelerate the adoption process.

The Digital REadiness Assessment MaturitY (DREAMY) framework to guide manufacturing companies towards a digitalisation roadmap

Digital technologies are considered the main drivers for the transformation of the manufacturing industry. To effectively navigate this wave of transformation, companies need to understand their current maturity state regarding implemented technologies and organisational processes across various functions. However, many organisations struggle to assess their digital status quo. Addressing this gap, this paper proposes a framework to help manufacturing companies become aware of their digital maturity level and guide them toward a digitalisation roadmap. The framework consists of a maturity model, the Digital Readiness Assessment MaturitY (DREAMY), inspired by the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), and a digitalisation roadmap tool. The research follows the design research methodology, combining a literature review, expert consultations, and validation through multiple industrial cases to develop, test, and refine the framework. The proposed framework enables companies to assess their current digital maturity, identify strengths and weaknesses, and discover opportunities for improvement, supporting a conscious transition toward Industry 4.0 and the forthcoming Industry 5.0 paradigm.

Comparative analysis of popular mobile robot roadmap path-planning methods

Global path planning using roadmap (RM) path-planning methods including Voronoi diagram (VD), rapidly exploring random trees (RRT), and probabilistic roadmap (PRM) has gained popularity over the years in robotics. These global path-planning methods are usually combined with other path-planning techniques to achieve collision-free robot control to a specified destination. However, it is unclear which of these methods is the best choice to compute the efficient path in terms of path length, computation time, path safety, and consistency of path computation. This article reviewed and adopted a comparative research methodology to perform a comparative analysis to determine the efficiency of these methods in terms of path optimality, safety, consistency, and computation time. A hundred maps of different complexities with obstacle occupancy rates ranging from 50.95% to 78.42% were used to evaluate the performance of the RM path-planning methods. Each method demonstrated unique strengths and limitations. The study provides critical insights into their relative performance, highlighting application-specific recommendations for selecting the most suitable RM method. These findings contribute to advancing robot path-planning techniques by offering a detailed evaluation of widely adopted methods.

The myriad consumption of plastic regularly, environmental impact and health disquietude of humans are at high risk. Microplastics (MPs) represent a contemporary type of contamination that has permeated several environmental areas. MP pollution is already widespread in marine environments, leading to increased awareness over the past few decades. Multiple studies are being conducted to determine the source of MPs and their harmful impacts on marine life and, ultimately, human health. Thus, this paper rigorously analyzed the origin, accumulation, and detrimental impacts of MPs on the marine ecosystem. An increase in the death rate, a decrease in the rate of growth, and a reduction in the quantity of food ingested were the primary changes that occurred in marine organisms. The hydrophobic properties of MPs enable them to facilitate the formation of biofilms, which are referred to as the plastisphere. These biofilms have the capacity to transport chemicals that are frequently hazardous and may potentially infiltrate the food chain. The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly exacerbated the plastic and MP contamination in coastal and marine environments as a result of the improper management of personal protective equipment and explosive production. The most recent developments in environmental DNA (eDNA) are valuable tools for the detection and tracking of MP contamination in coastal and marine ecosystems. These technologies offer greater sensibility, efficacy, and involvement in the process. There are several measures and attempts that must be taken to address the MP pollution issues in the marine environment. The knowledge gained from this review will serve as a foundation for future marine MP research and management techniques.

Carbon peak roadmap for China's major energy-intensive industries: a bottom-up modeling approach

Previous research has lacked a comprehensive study of the coupling and connections between China's four major energy-intensive industries: electricity, steel, cement, and coal chemicals, which contribute to over 65% of China's total carbon emissions and significantly impact the path to achieving China's carbon peak. To address this gap, we developed a detailed energy-carbon integrated model, which include three scenarios: Business As Usual (BAU), Peak Oriented Scenario (POS), and Neutrality Oriented Scenario (NOS). Then, we analyzed the carbon emission trends in the four industries and assessed the contribution of key technologies to emission reductions. Our findings indicate that under the BAU, POS, and NOS, the carbon emissions will peak in 2030, 2025, and 2022, respectively, with peak values of 8.56, 8.06, and 7.81 billion tons. Raw material structure adjustments account for over 50% of carbon reductions in both the POS and NOS. Cleaning technology substitution and energy-saving technology collectively contribute to 10-20%. Therefore, cleaning fuels and raw materials and developing decarbonization technologies should be the main direction of future efforts, which will facilitate a timely carbon peak and lower peak value, aligning with global efforts to achieve the carbon reduction targets set out in the Paris Climate Agreement.

In fault diagnosis, machine learning theories are gaining popularity as they proved to be an efficient tool that not only reduces human effort but also identifies the health conditions of the machines automatically. In this work, an attempt has been made to systematically review the progress of machine learning theories in fault diagnosis from scratch to future perspectives. Initially, artificial intelligence came into the picture which started to weaken the human effort whose efficiency relies on feature extraction which depends on expert knowledge. The introduction of deep learning theories has reformed the fault diagnosis process by realising the artificial aid, encouraging end-to-end encryption in the diagnostic procedure. The deep learning theories have also filled the gap between the large amount of monitoring data and the health conditions of industrial machines. The future of deep learning theories i.e. transfer learning which uses the knowledge of one domain to another related domain during fault diagnosis has been reviewed. In last, the research trends of the machine learning theories have been briefly discussed along with their challenges in fault diagnostics.

Navigating unhinged paradoxes: an interdisciplinary roadmap for energy efficiency in data centers

Interdisciplinary teams skilled in Aristotle's three knowledge forms, phronesis, episteme, techne, are essential for dealing with complex challenges in future. As sectors transition to new concepts, risks exist for unhinged paradoxes, i.e., unforeseen consequences. This is particularly relevant for industries with complex infrastructures, such as data centers (DCs). This paper presents a conceptual roadmap consisting of four interconnected phases for integrating energy efficiency concepts in DCs, with a focus on avoiding unhinged paradoxes. The knowledge creation process during the roadmapping process underscores the importance from (1) the acknowledgement of an external threat, (2) inclusion of an interdisciplinary team, and (3) regular project meetings to facilitate a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. Additionally, the insights gained from this research extend to sectors beyond DCs and can be applied to other industries working towards increased energy efficiency.

To ensure dependable and sustainable supply of electricity, a modern power grid is necessary which will be smarter. On this ground, United States and some developed countries in Europe, Asia, and Australia have carried out some significant activities to formulate and promote a pathway for the evolution of the next generation intelligent grid. Implementation of Smart Grid can be a better tool to develop greener digital Bangladesh. This new technology ensures effective control of electric supply and demand using information technology, and assures the potential use of eco-friendly power generation. The objective of this paper is to present a roadmap that could be used as guidance for the development of smart grid architecture based on functions and technological challenges for this south Asian nation. This paper contains a discussion on the functions of smart grid from perspective of the country. The key technological challenges to implement this new intelligent grid have been outlined and their potential remedies are proposed. The paper also illustrates the ongoing initiative taken up by Bangladesh government towards smarter grid. The most challenging part is to run this new technology in a profitable manner and to ensure this, some pilot projects are needed to be demonstrated.

Reference materials are fundamental tools for radiochemistry measurements laboratories to establish and evaluate analytical methods, test measurement capabilities, quantify radionuclides, compare analytical results, and establish legal confidence defensibility in measurement results. Over the past decades the focus of low-level environmental reference material producers have adapted to evolving national and international priorities and needs. This document provides a roadmap of high priority current and future low-level radionuclide Certified Reference and Performance Evaluation Materials that subject-matter experts have identified at NIST and other public workshops (Blueprints) as crucial to metrologists and program directors to address national and international issues.
