Improvement for solving the mix-up problem in constant modulus arrays

The authors propose an efficient and computationally fast algorithm for solving the mix-up problem in complex arrays. The Lagrange multiplier theory is used in the optimisation of the constant modulus algorithm (CMA) cost function and the input data are processed in blocks. Furthermore, a simplification of the CMA cost function is proposed that leads to a robust algorithm for solving this problem. Simulations are presented to support the analysis.

This paper provides a time-domain feedback analysis of the perceptron learning algorithm and of training schemes for dynamic networks with output feedback, It studies the robustness performance of the algorithms in the presence of uncertainties that might be due to noisy perturbations in the reference signals or to modeling mismatch, In particular, bounds are established on the step-size parameters in order to guarantee that the resulting algorithms will behave as robust filters, The paper also establishes that an intrinsic feedback structure can be associated with the training schemes, The feedback configuration is motivated via energy arguments and is shown to consist of two major blocks: a time-variant lossless (i.e., energy preserving) feedforward path and a time-variant feedback path, The stability of the feedback structure is then analyzed via the small gain theorem and choices for the step-size parameter in order to guarantee faster convergence are deduced by appealing to the mean-value theorem, Simulation results are included to demonstrate the findings.

Source localization in a shallow-water channel with a rough surface

The problem of source localization in a shallow-water sea is considered, in which the fully developed sea is the prevailing sound-scattering mechanism. Using the criterion of the signal-to-noise-ratio maximum, we construct robust algorithms for estimating the parameters of partially coherent signals. The results of testing these methods for solving the inverse problem using experimental data obtained on a stationary path in the Barents Sea are presented. It is shown that under real conditions, the corresponding algorithms are serviceable and provide satisfactory quality of reconstructing a source located at a distance of similar to 15 km from an antenna array.

New decoupled framework for reliability-based design optimization

Traditionally, reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) has been formulated as a nested optimization problem, The inner loop, generally, involves the solution to optimization problems for computing the probabilities of failure of the critical failure modes, and the outer loop performs optimization by varying the decision variables. Such formulations are by nature computationally intensive, requiring numerous function and constraint evaluations. To alleviate this problem, researchers have developed iterative decoupled RBDO approaches. These methods perform deterministic optimization and reliability assessment in a sequential manner until a consistent reliability-based design is obtained. The sequential methods are attractive because a consistent reliable design can be obtained at considerably lower computational cost. However, the designs obtained by using these decoupled approaches cannot guarantee production of the true solution. A new decoupled method for RBDO is developed in this investigation. Postoptimal sensitivities of the most probable point (MPP) of failure with respect to the decision variables are introduced to update the MPPs during the deterministic optimization phase of the proposed approach. A damped Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno method is used to significantly reduce the cost of obtaining these sensitivities. It is the use of postoptimal sensitivities that differentiates this new decoupled RBDO approach from previous efforts.

Simultaneous approximation for IIR digital filters with log magnitude and phase response

In this paper, we propose a new design algorithm for nearly linear phase IIR digital filters with prescribed log magnitude response. The error function used here is the sum of the weighted log magnitude-squared error and phase-squared error, and so it is possible to control log magnitude and phase response directly. The gradient vector of the proposed error function is easily calculated as the closed form solution because of its nature, in which the real and imaginary part of the logarithm of a complex transfer transfer function corresponds to the log magnitude and phase response, respectively. This algorithm is simple and converges quickly. Finally, we show the validity of the proposed algorithm with some examples.

Multilevel Coalition Formation Strategy for Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses Missions

This paper investigates the problem of how to form coalitions in teams of heterogeneous vehicles. In particular, a coordination strategy is designed for unmanned vehicles to autonomously carry out the suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) mission, which would benefit from a heterogeneous network of unmanned vehicles to search and destroy threats in an unexplored area. Inspiration for this work is drawn from natural systems, and we consider the alliance-forming behavior of bottlenose dolphins as a guiding example. A two-phased approach is taken to develop the bioinspired strategy. First, in the context of multi-agent systems, a mathematical model is produced that expressively captures the alliance-forming behavior. Next, this model is tailored to the suppression of enemy air defenses mission: the target application. Advantages of using this bioinspired approach are discussed and simulations are provided to demonstrate its operation.

In recent years, hyperbolic functions including hyperbolic cosine, hyperbolic sine and inverse hyperbolic sine have been increasingly used in the design of adaptive filters. However, the performance of these algorithms may still be surpassed. This paper introduces a tanh-based logarithmic hyperbolic cosine adaptive filtering algorithm, aimed at enhancing both the accuracy and minimizing steady-state errors in adaptive filters. Through rigorous theoretical analysis, we derive the step-size criteria essential for ensuring algorithm convergence. Subsequently, we validate the algorithm's practical efficacy through simulation experiments, demonstrating its superior performance against comparable algorithms within the same category. The simulation outcomes conclusively show that our proposed algorithm outperforms its peers.

Most of the existing distributed adaptive filtering algorithms over wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are developed, aiming to solve unconstrained network optimization problems. However, in practice, the weight coefficients of the filter may need to satisfy a set of linear equations. Thus, a distributed adaptive algorithm that can solve the sensor network optimization problem under constraints is needed. Considering the possible impulsive interference in the observed signals, a novel robust distributed constrained adaptive algorithm called diffusion constrained least mean M-estimate (D-CLMM) is proposed by using the modified Huber function (MHF), which endows the network robustness to impulsive noise. The transient, steady-state performances and stability of the proposed D-CLMM are studied with the aid of some commonly used assumptions and verified by computer simulations. Moreover, the effectiveness of D-CLMM is verified in distributed parameter estimation and beamforming applications in non-Gaussian noise environments.

Stabilising illumination variations in motion detection for surveillance applications

Since illumination variations may cause the misinterpretation of data for various higher vision applications and algorithms, this study aims to reduce such influence. In order to obtain a motion mask, which is input for a higher vision application, wavelet coefficients are calculated by applying two-dimensional lifting wavelet transform with two mother wavelets. Energy is calculated from the obtained wavelet coefficients. Morphological operations are used to improve output image. The developed algorithm is a robust algorithm further reducing false alarm readings caused by illumination variations (better false detection rate and percentage of correct classifications).
