Security metric and related security routing algorithm design based on trust model

Network routing-based attacks have become more common and the attack consequence can be more serious than other traditional network attacks. Most schemes on improving routing data security are applied to current routing protocols, e.g. digital signature, message authentication and intrusion detection, etc. But very few design guidelines on how to select a secure path to forward confidential user packets. By analyzing the security mechanisms and security threats over network entities, trust degrees of communication links and routers are measured and trust relations are built among network routers. Based on the trust model, a novel SM(Security Metric) is further defined and quantified as the routing criterion used in the proposed security routing algorithm SMRA (Security Metric based routing Algorithm). Simulation results show that SMRA gets better performance than OSPF in terms of packets delivery ratio and routing security in unsafe networks.

MPH-M, AODV-M and DSR-M Performance Evaluation under Jamming Attacks

In this work, we present the design of a mitigation scheme for jamming attacks integrated to the routing protocols MPH, AODV, and DSR. The resulting protocols are named MPH-M (Multi-Parent Hierarchical - Modified), AODV-M (Ad hoc On Demand Distance Vector - Modified), and DSR-M (Dynamic Source routing - Modified). For the mitigation algorithm, if the detection algorithm running locally in each node produces a positive result then the node is isolated;second, the routing protocol adapts their paths avoiding the isolated nodes. We evaluated how jamming attacks affect different metrics for all these modified protocols. The metrics we employ to detect jamming attack are number of packet retransmissions, number of CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) retries while waiting for an idle channel and the energy wasted by the node. The metrics to evaluate the performance of the modified routing protocols are the throughput and resilience of the system and the energy used by the nodes. We evaluated all the modified protocols when the attacker position was set near, middle and far of the collector node. The results of our evaluation show that performance for MPH-M is much better than AODV-M and DSR-M. For example, the node energy for MPH-M is 138.13% better than AODV-M and 126.07% better than DSR-M. Moreover, we also find that MPH-M benefits much more of the mitigation scheme than AODV-M and DSR-M. For example, the node energy consumption is 34.61% lower for MPH-M and only 3.92% and 3.42% for AODV-M and DSR-M, respectively. On throughput, the MPH protocol presents a packet reception efficiency at the collector node of 16.4% on to AODV and DSR when there is no mitigation mechanism. Moreover, MPH-M has an efficiency greater than 7.7% with respect to AODV-M and DSR-M when there is a mitigation scheme. In addition, we have that with the mitigation mechanism AODV-M and DSR-M do not present noticeable modification. However, MPH-M improves its efficiency by

The internet has become hugely successful in recent years and people are constantly developing new services to put on the internet. The technical means that has made it possible to generate this interconnected network is the IP-protocol, which was standardised in 1981. It has been up to the task so far, but IP-addresses are becoming a scarce resource. A new version of this protocol has finally arrived to target these needs. The author introduces the features of this protocol, implications for transition to the new protocol and shows ways to manage all the interconnected devices on the network.

Research on a routing algorithm for clustered wireless sensor networks

In wireless sensor networks, clustering algorithm prolongs networks' lifetime drastically. For a large size of WSN, the cluster head will consume too much energy if it transmits message to the sink directly. At first the EDR(energy distance ratio) was proposed for the problem, which gave the relationship between transmitting distance and energy efficiency. Afterward, a routing algorithm for transmitting message from cluster head to the sink was brought forward. In the algorithm, every node saved the information about location and energy of other nodes in current cluster. A transmitter selected the relaying node from its memory. If there was no node to relay in this cluster, the transmitter would send asking information to neighbor cluster and one of nodes in neighbor cluster answered the transmitter who was the relaying node. At last, simulation exhibited the algorithm was able to reduce energy consumption of WSN and also do well for balancing energy for WSN.

Improving Route Selections in ZigBee Wireless Sensor Networks

The ZigBee wireless communication specifications forecast the use of multihop routes between nodes and define that nodes select their routes based on their costs. The specifications define how to compute a route cost from the probability of successfully transmitting on each of the routes' links;and it is recommended that such probabilities be obtained by counting received link status messages or averaging link quality indicators from received packets. In this paper, we study the performance of these two recommended procedures, show that they can lead to degraded route selections, and propose a procedure that can improve route selections without modifications to the ZigBee protocol or frame formats. Our procedure estimates the probability of successful transmission on each link, based on information from the medium access layer during unicast packet transmissions, and includes a modification into how ZigBee nodes treat routing messages internally in order to reduce variations in the link cost estimates. Focusing on a home environment with one or two hops, our simulation results show that, in several scenarios, our procedure performs better than either of the two procedures recommended in the ZigBee specifications.
