Computational Modeling of Human Left Ventricle to Assess the Effects of Trabeculae Carneae on the Diastolic and Systolic Functions

Trabeculae carneae are irregular structures that cover the endocardial surfaces of both ventricles and account for a significant portion of human ventricular mass. The role of trabeculae carneae in diastolic and systolic functions of the left ventricle (LV) is not well understood. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the functional role of trabeculae carneae in the LV. Finite element (FE) analyses of ventricular functions were conducted for three different models of human LV derived from high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The first model comprised trabeculae carneae and papillary muscles, while the second model had papillary muscles and partial trabeculae carneae, and the third model had a smooth endocardial surface. We customized these patient-specific models with myofiber architecture generated with a rule-based algorithm, diastolic material parameters of Fung strain energy function derived from biaxial tests and adjusted with the empirical Klotz relationship, and myocardial contractility constants optimized for average normal ejection fraction (EF) of the human LV. Results showed that the partial trabeculae cutting model had enlarged end-diastolic volume (EDV), reduced wall stiffness, and even increased end-systolic function, indicating that the absence of trabeculae carneae increased the compliance of the LV during diastole, while maintaining systolic function.

There is a rich repertoire of methods for stress detection using various physiological signals and algorithms. However, there is still a gap in research efforts moving from laboratory studies to real-world settings. A small number of research has verified when a physiological response is a reaction to an extrinsic stimulus of the participant's environment in real-world settings. Typically, physiological signals are correlated with the spatial characteristics of the physical environment, supported by video records or interviews. The present research aims to bridge the gap between laboratory settings and real-world field studies by introducing a new algorithm that leverages the capabilities of wearable physiological sensors to detect moments of stress (MOS). We propose a rule-based algorithm based on galvanic skin response and skin temperature, combing empirical findings with expert knowledge to ensure transferability between laboratory settings and real-world field studies. To verify our algorithm, we carried out a laboratory experiment to create a gold standard of physiological responses to stressors. We validated the algorithm in real-world field studies using a mixed-method approach by spatially correlating the participant's perceived stress, geo-located questionnaires, and the corresponding real-world situation from the video. Results show that the algorithm detects MOS with 84% accuracy, showing high correlations between measured (by wearable sensors), reported (by questionnaires and eDiary entries), and recorded (by video) stress events. The urban stressors that were identified in the real-world studies originate from traffic congestion, dangerous driving situations, and crowded areas such as tourist attractions. The presented research can enhance stress detection in real life and may thus foster a better understanding of circumstances that bring about physiological stress in humans.

They also impart information about a particular event or specific situation. There is limited research on crowd management to handle a disaster. We should focus on Crowd Management using Sentiment Analysis as a tool for safety in some events or situations. People convey their emotion about crowd using social sites. Crowd-related issues encountered day to day life such as stations, shopping malls, and stadiums or some events like marriage which may cause congestion and due to that some people may be injured or causes death. Peoples post their sentiments through Twitter, LinkedIn etc. In this paper, we consider traffic jam event where traffic will be able to move or will not be able to move. For this purpose, tweets are collected from social networking site Twitter. Human expressions are expressed through Natural Language Processing and then calculate polarity of sentiment using rule-based approach. User's opinion is classified into positive, negative or neutral Sentiment. Polarity score of sentence is calculated through SND pattern. Users may enter false tweets which will decrease accuracy of system. To increase accuracy of system along with polarity score, we also consider polling based on user ranking in our proposed system.

This paper presents the application of Machine Learning (ML) algorithm as an algorithmic music composer, compared to a rule-based algorithm. The ML model is based on LSTMs which takes in previous notes and predicts the next set of notes based on a midi format. For the rule-based method, we apply chord progression rules and binary rhythm pattern theory. We used both algorithms to generate music in two different genres, namely rock, and jazz. To evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithms, fifteen raters are asked to identify the genre of the generated songs. The results showed 77.33% of the rule-based algorithms Jazz songs were correctly identified, compared to the 62.67% generated by the LSTM. For the rock genre, only 49.33% percent of rule-based algorithms songs and 44% Machine Learning algorithms songs were correctly identified. In terms of music satisfaction, the rule-based algorithm on average obtains higher scores in both genres, 2.17 for Jazz and 2.42 for Rock while Machine Learning algorithm receives 1.83 for Jazz songs and 1.57 for Rock.

Data mining approach to estimate the duration of drug therapy from longitudinal electronic medical records

Background: Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) from primary/ ambulatory care systems present a new and promising source of information for conducting clinical and translational research. Objectives: To address the methodological and computational challenges in order to extract reliable medication information from raw data which is often complex, incomplete and erroneous. To assess whether the use of specific chaining fields of medication information may additionally improve the data quality. Methods: Guided by a range of challenges associated with missing and internally inconsistent data, we introduce two methods for the robust extraction of patient-level medication data. First method relies on chaining fields to estimate duration of treatment (“chaining”), while second disregards chaining fields and relies on the chronology of records (“continuous”). Centricity EMR database was used to estimate treatment duration with both methods for two widely prescribed drugs among type 2 diabetes patients: insulin and glucagonlike peptide-1 receptor agonists. Results: At individual patient level the “chaining” approach could identify the treatment alterations longitudinally and produced more robust estimates of treatment duration for individual drugs, while the “continuous” method was unable to capture that dynamics. At population level, both methods produced similar estimates of average treatment duration, however, notable differences were observed at individual-patient level. Conclusion: The proposed algorithms explicitly identify and handle longitudinal erroneous or missing entries and estimate treatment duration with specific drug(s) of interest, which makes them a valuable tool for future EMR based clinical and pharmaco-epidemiological studies. To improve accuracy of real-world based studies, implementing chaining fields of medication information is recommended. © 2017 Montvida et al.

A smoothed finite element method for analysis of anisotropic large deformation of passive rabbit ventricles in diastole

The smoothed FEM (S-FEM) is firstly extended to explore the behavior of 3D anisotropic large deformation of rabbit ventricles during the passive filling process in diastole. Because of the incompressibility of myocardium, a special method called selective face-based/node-based S-FEM using four-node tetrahedral elements (FS/NS-FEM-TET4) is adopted in order to avoid volumetric locking. To validate the proposed algorithms of FS/NS-FEM-TET4, the 3D Lame problem is implemented. The performance contest results show that our FS/NS-FEM-TET4 is accurate, volumetric locking-free and insensitive to mesh distortion than standard linear FEM because of absence of isoparametric mapping. Actually, the efficiency of FS/NS-FEM-TET4 is comparable with higher-order FEM, such as 10-node tetrahedral elements. The proposed method for Holzapfel myocardium hyperelastic strain energy is also validated by simple shear tests through the comparison outcomes reported in available references. Finally, the FS/NS-FEM-TET4 is applied in the example of the passive filling of MRI-based rabbit ventricles with fiber architecture derived from rule-based algorithm to demonstrate its efficiency. Hence, we conclude that FS/NS-FEM-TET4 is a promising alternative other than FEM in passive cardiac mechanics. Copyright (c) 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Massive deployment of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in the coming years will create more challenges for the power system including the aging rate of transformers. It will be an essential requirement to propose solutions to minimize the impacts related to the integration of PEVs. Special attention must be given to the residential electric grid where charging will mostly take place. In this paper, first we propose a rule-based (RB) algorithm which determines the minimum charging power levels of home-charged PEVs with/without a charging ban during peak hours. Second, we evaluate the consequences of supplying an RB algorithm on life duration of a low-voltage transformer supplying a residential area.

We propose a new method for QT interval measurement which first detects the morphology of the T-wave and then finds the T-end according to the detected morphology. The proposed method has more emphasis on detection of the T-wave morphology which helps more accurate detection of the T-end and better lead selection for QT interval measurement. Six types of T-wave morphologies (normal, invert, biphase +-, biphase -+, only upward and only downward) have been considered and a rule-based algorithm employed to detect the T-wave morphology by examining the primitive components. Followed by the detection of the morphology, the T-end is determined as the point on the signal that has maximum distance to the line representing the last segment of the T-wave. The proposed method has been tested against the QT database available on Physionet. The mean difference between the T-end in the reference annotation and the calculated one by our method is 0.9 ms and the standard deviation is 18.9 ms.

This paper presents three different methods to optimize a day-ahead self-scheduling for an isolated DC microgrid operation. based on forecast data, a multi-objective cost function is formulated aiming to minimize the total energy cost by reducing the micro-turbine fuel consumption, avoiding photovoltaic power limitation and load shedding, while respecting the storage parameters and microgrid operation constraints. The problem is solved with two different optimization algorithms and one rule-based algorithm. The comparison is made on the total energy cost and computational cost for each proposed approach. The results prove that the mixed integer linear programing optimization permits to obtain the lower total energy cost with a reasonable computational cost.
