In this contribution, the Fisher-Bingham-5 (FB5) probability density function (pdf) is used to model the shape of the direction power spectral density function (psdf) of individual path components in the radio channel. The FB5 distribution is selected because, among all direction distributions, it maximizes the entropy under the constraints that the first and second distribution moments are specified. A sage (Space-Alternating Generalized Expectation-maximization) algorithm is derived based on this model for estimation of the parameters characterizing the direction psdf of each path component in a multi-path scenario. The performance of the sage algorithm is evaluated using measurement data. Preliminary results show that the estimated direction psdfs of individual path components exhibit different ovalnesses and tilt angles. These density functions are noticeably more concentrated than the corresponding footprints in the Bartlett spectrum.

This paper discusses the use of the Space-Alternating Generalized Expectation-maximization (sage) algorithm for Time of Arrival (ToA) estimation in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems. This algorithm, which is an extension of the expectation-maximization approach, can exploit the intrinsic properties of a multi-carrier OFDM system to achieve the estimation of a number of parameters of each incoming signal replica, such as its amplitude, ToA, Doppler shift, and angle of arrival. The sage method can also be easily tailored to estimate only a desired subset of these parameters. Accordingly, this study focuses on the sole ToA estimation, but extending the sage functionalities to dual-band OFDM systems. This extension is achieved by exploiting the availability at the receiver of more than one band from the same transmitter, and combining the derived channel information to increase the bandwidth available for estimation. It will be shown that, in highly correlated scenarios, the performance of the sage algorithm for ToA estimation in a dual-band system is comparable to that of a single-band system with equivalent total bandwidth.

This paper presents the problem of estimating the parameters of a given number of superimposed signals, as is the case of the received signal in wireless communications. Based on the description of the received signal in the frequency domain, one version of the sage (Space-Alternating Generalized Expectation-Maximization) algorithm is presented, allowing the estimation, for each impinging ray, the delay, azimuth, elevation and complex amplitude. Ray retrieval results are presented in synthetic channels, using data generated with the extended Saleh Valenzuela (ESV) model, and also in real channels.

The millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is a promising solution to future high-speed data transmission. To study the impact of its wireless channel, a ray-launching simulator is developed to generate deterministic channel models according to realistic scenario descriptions. For such channel modeling, the material parameters play an important role in the electromagnetic numerical computing of multi-path components (MPCs) and should be calibrated according to channel measurement results. Our contribution in this paper is three-fold: we conduct the channel measurement in an indoor scenario for extracting mmWave channel characteristics, apply the Hungarian algorithm to pair measured and simulated propagation MPCs and apply the sage algorithm for the parameter calibration of materials impacting on the MPCs. Note that the proposed material parameter calibration method is general for the various radio propagation environment, not limited by the indoor or outdoor scenarios. Moreover, it avoids independent measurement of specific materials in a given scenario, thus greatly reducing the difficulty of obtaining material parameters. The result shows that the space alternating generalized expectation-maximization (sage) algorithm achieves a good match between measurement and simulation with a reasonable computational effort.

Space-alternating generalized expectationmaximization (sage) algorithm is proposed to compute the jointly maximum-likelihood estimate of the relative delay, incidence azimuth, and complex amplitude, which are considered the character parameters of impinging waves in indoor radio environments. The maximization processes of sage algorithm can be separated into several individual procedures which can be performed sequentially to reduce the computational complexity. To study the impact of the antenna arrays on the performance of the estimation, different receive antenna arrays, such as linear array, circular array and triangle array, are applied to evaluate the resolution, accuracy and the mean convergence rate of the sage method with different receive antenna arrays by synthetic simulation. Unlike the uniform distribution usually used in the outdoor mobile channel model to evaluate the radio channel estimation methods previously, in the indoor circumstance the angular spread of the impinging signals is supposed to distribute as the clustered "double Poisson" time-ofarrivat model, and the angular distribution is also clustered with uniformly distributed clusters and arrivals within clusters that have a Laplacian distribution. Finally, the applicability of the sage algorithm (with virtual circular array) to real indoor propagation environments is demonstrated.

This paper is concerned with joint channel estimation and data detection for uplink multicarrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) systems in the presence of frequency fading channel. The detection and estimation algorithm, implemented at the receiver, is based on a version of the expectation maximization (EM) technique, called the space-alternating-generalized-expectation-maximization (sage) algorithm which is very suitable for the multicarrier signal formats. Application of the sage algorithm to the problem of iterative data detection and channel estimation leads to a receiver structure that also incorporates a partial interference cancelation. Computer simulations show that the proposed algorithm has excellent BER end estimation performance.

DOA estimation using fast EM and sage algorithms

In this work we study direction of arrival estimation using expectation-maximization (EM) and space alternating generalized EM (sage) algorithms. The EM algorithm is a general and popular numerical method for finding maximum-likelihood estimates which is characterized by simple implementation and stable convergence. The sage algorithm, a generalized form of the EM algorithm, allows a more flexible optimization scheme and sometimes converges faster than the EM algorithm. Motivated by the componentwise convergence of the EM and sage algorithms, we suggest to use smaller search spaces after a few iterations. In this way, the overall computational costs can be reduced drastically. A procedure derived from the convergence properties of the EM and sage algorithms is proposed to determine the search spaces adaptively. By numerical experiments we demonstrate that the fast EM and the fast sage algorithms are computationally more efficient and have the same statistical performance as the original algorithms. In this work, the convergence rates of direction of arrival (DOA) estimates using the expectation-maximization (EM) and space alternating generalized EM (sage) algorithms are investigated. The EM algorithm is a well-known iterative method for locating modes of a likelihood function and is characterized by simple implementation and stability. Unfortunately, the slow convergence associated with EM makes it less attractive for practical applications. The sage algorithm proposed by Fessler and Hero, based on the same idea of data augmentation, has the potential to speed up convergence and preserves the advantage of simple implementation. We study both algorithms within the framework of array processing. Theoretical analysis shows that sage has faster convergence speed than EM under certain conditions on observed and augmented information matrices. The analytical results are supported by numerical simulations carried out over a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and various source locations.

In estimating DOA of incident waves with high accuracy, we often have to take into consideration the angular spread of each wave due to reflection, diffraction, and scattering. As a method of estimating DOA and AS simultaneously, sage-DOA-Matrix method was proposed which uses DOA-Matrix method along with sage algorithm. In this paper, we further improve the estimation performance of the method by using SLS algorithm.
