Joint estimation of azimuth and elevation angles is of great importance in source localization and channel characterization. Firstly, some basic knowledge of three typical parametric estimation algorithms are introduced in this paper, i.e., multiple signal classification (MUSIC). Unitary estimation of signal parameter via rotational invariance technique (ESPRIT), and space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (sage) algorithms. Each algorithm is capable of extracting both azimuth angle of arrival (AAoA) and elevation angle of arrival (EAoA) of multi-paths jointly. It is pointed out that the sage and MUSIC algorithms have higher complexity than the Unitary ESPRIT algorithm due to the iteration/angle searching procedure. Secondly, impacts of antenna number, closely spaced paths, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) on estimation performance of three algorithms are analyzed. Results show that the Unitary ESPRIT algorithm has lower accuracy in comparison with the MUSIC and sage algorithms when antenna number and SNR are large. Finally, three algorithms are applied to estimate multipath parameters in 16 GHz massive MIMO channel measurements. It is shown that the Unitary ESPRIT algorithm performs less satisfactory in MPCs extraction, while MUSIC can provide comparable results with the sage algorithm.

Iterative sage-Based Channel Estimation in a Block Fading Amplify-and-Forward Relaying Network

Several diversity techniques have been proposed to cope with fading in wireless networks. A recent and promising technique, which does not increase hardware demands, is cooperative communication. Here spatial diversity is created by using other terminals to relay the information from the source terminal to the destination terminal. Cooperative protocols proposed in literature are often studied under the simplifying assumption that all channel state information is available at the destination. This contrasts to a practical scenario where channel estimates need to be derived from the broadcasted signals. In this paper, we focus on the Amplify-and-Forward protocol and use the Space-Alternating Generalized Expectation-maximization (sage) algorithm to estimate the channel gain and noise variance in an iterative way, exploiting both the pilot part and the data part of the signal received at the destination. We consider a relay that performs a general affine transformation on the pilot symbols received by the source, and we optimize this transformation in terms of estimation accuracy. The resulting mean square error performance is shown to be close to the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRB).

Performance Comparison of sage and MUSIC for Channel Estimation in Direction-Scan Measurements

In this paper, the performances of a space-alternating generalized expectation maximization (sage) algorithm and a MUltiple Signal Identification Classification (MUSIC) technique are compared when they are used to estimate the parameters of multipath components in a propagation channel from measurement data acquired by stepping a horn antenna in directions. The impacts of the horn antenna's half-power beamwidth (HPBW) and the stepping strategy on root mean squared estimation error and the intrinsic resolution of the estimators are investigated through simulations. The results demonstrate that the performances of both methods rely on the settings of the direction-scan strategy and the antenna HPBW. In general, the MUSIC algorithm, which owns a superior resolution, is less sensitive to the scan configuration and more suitable for scenarios of high signal-to-noise power ratio compared with the sage algorithm. Measurement data collected at 13-17 GHz is processed by using both algorithms. The results show that the MUSIC technique can be used to provide similar results with those of the sage algorithm at a time consumption significantly reduced.

In order to improve the decoding performance of MIMO-OFDM system in the case of the channel state information is not accurate enough,a new algorithm is proposed,which combines sage algorithm,DFT-LS channel estimation and maximum likelihood detection *** algorithm utilizes joint iterative technology to achieve channel estimation and decoding effect,thereby enhances the reliability of the *** study and simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can track the channel change correctly without increasing the system overhead,and the convergence speed is ***,the performance is superior to the commonly used joint detection ***,comparing with the ideal channel estimation under the maximum likelihood detection algorithm,the new proposed algorithm only has a loss of 0.5d B with the same bit error rate.

The matrix inversion for the maximum likelihood (ML) channel estimation requires high complexity for the direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) systems. The prime motivation of the paper is to propose channel estimators that achieve mean square error (MSE) performance of ML channel estimator in an iterative manner without any matrix inversion. Therefore, two computationally efficient solutions to the problem of ML channel estimation are proposed. We compare the both algorithms in terms of the number of used iteration and show that the proposed algorithms converge the same MSE performance of the ML estimator as the increasing number of iterations.

Recursive EM and sage-inspired algorithms with application to DOA estimation

This paper is concerned with recursive estimation using augmented data. We study two recursive procedures closely linked with the well-known expectation and maximization (EM) and space alternating generalized EM (sage) algorithms. Unlike iterative methods, the recursive EM and sage-inspired algorithms give a quick update on estimates given new data. Under mild conditions, estimates generated by these procedures are strongly consistent and asymptotically normally distributed. These mathematical properties are valid for a broad class of problems. When applied to direction of arrival (DOA) estimation, the recursive EM and sage-inspired algorithms lead to a very simple and fast implementation of the maximum-likelihood (ML) method. The most complicated computation in each recursion is inversion of the augmented information matrix. Through data augmentation, this matrix is diagonal and easy to invert. More importantly, there is no search in such recursive procedures. Consequently, the computational time is much less than that associated with existing numerical methods for finding ML estimates. This feature greatly increases the potential of the ML approach in real-time processing. Numerical experiments show that both algorithms provide good results with low computational cost.

An iterative joint data detection and channel estimation algorithm for downlink multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems is proposed. The resulting algorithm is a space alternating generalized expectation-maximization (sage) algorithm which updates the data sequences serially and the channel parameters in parallel, leading to a receiver structure that also incorparates interchannel interference cancellation. Its performance is compared with various Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) estimators for a multipath frequency selective fading channel using simulations. It is illustrated that the proposed sage algorithm performs better than the MMSE estimators considered in this paper.

Real-time monitoring of electromechanical faults is today at the heart of scientific research in the industrial sector. Indeed, the idea of this work is therefore to show, through a comparison based on performance indicators (precision, calculation time, occupied memory size, and convergence), which the processing algorithm of the signal is more robust in detecting the spectral characteristics of a fault using the MCSA method (Machine Current Signature Analysis). To do this, we used indicators such as NMSE to calculate the estimation errors on the estimated frequencies of the faults by these algorithms. The MATLAB simulations of the detection of a bearing fault, known by its spectral characteristics (two, four and six harmonics) and injected into a stator current signal with a variable level according to SNR, showed that the ESPRIT-TLS method exceeds the VMD, EMD, sage, and CLEAN algorithms and occupies the first place in the precise discrimination of this type of fault, especially when its amplitudes are low and even when close frequencies are used.

As a promising key technology for the sixth generation (6G) wireless communication systems, the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is able to intelligently control the propagation environments. In order to investigate the properties of RIS-assisted channels, related channel measurements are necessary. However, the channel parameter estimation (CPE) work in RIS-assisted channel measurements is challenging since the RIS can only tune part of the channel. In this paper, we present a novel channel sounding procedure firstly where channels are observed through different RIS transmission modes. Then a space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (sage) based CPE scheme for 6G RIS-assisted channel measurements is proposed, which is realized by the multipath components (MPCs) tracking and detection, the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation, and other procedures. It is capable of detecting whether MPCs interact with RIS and estimating all important channel parameters, including the angle parameters at the RIS side. Finally, the proposed scheme is evaluated through synthetic channels. The impacts of the RIS size, the number of transmission modes, and the phase quantization on its performance are investigated. Simulation results show a good performance of the proposed scheme.

The widely used broadband wireless technology enables a novel application of providing high-quality communications between vehicles and traffic control centers, which is collectively referred to as vehicle-to-ground communications. Channel modeling is in rapidly increasing demand to design and optimize the vehicle-to-ground communication systems. And practical channel models are only available when accurate estimations of the channel parameters are feasible. By adopting quadrature encoding and spectrum spreading, a novel and low-cost measurement method is proposed in this paper. The method can be implemented to achieve channel matrix accurately and furthermore determinate the parameters of a MIMO channel by using the space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (sage) algorithm. Then the method was carried out in a measurement of a vehicle-mounted 4x4 MIMO system. Both large-scale and small-scale fading are investigated and analyzed. A path loss (PL) model and characteristics of channel parameters including PDP, K-factor, angle of arrival (AOA), angle of departure (AOD) and spatial correlation matrixes for V2G channel modeling are given based on the estimations. These results offer a valuable reference for future studies.
