Measurement-Based Experimental Statistical Modeling of Propagation Channel in Industrial IoT Scenario

This paper presents 3-4 and 38-40 GHz wideband channel characteristics for industrial internet-of-things (IIoT) scenario based on measurements. The channel measurement equipment applied in the measurements consists of a programmable vector network analyzer and necessary auxiliaries. An extensive amount of data in line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) scenarios is collected with omnidirectional antennas in both transmitter and receiver ends. With the Space-Alternating Generalized Expectation-maximization (sage) algorithm, the multipath components (MPCs) of the received signals are extracted to calculate the channel model parameters, for example, channel gain coefficient, delay spread, and RiceanKfactor. By studying the statistical characteristics of these parameters, a stochastic channel model in IIoT scenario is initially established and compared with the existing indoor channel models. Moreover, the distinctive characteristics of channel parameters in the millimeter wave band and sub-6 GHz band in the IIoT scenario are demonstrated.

AoA-Based Localization System Using a Single IoT Gateway: An Application for Smart Pedestrian Crossing

During the last decade, the concept of smart cities is gaining popularity, and many cities all around the globe are adopting it. Lately, the Smart Pedestrian Crossing (SPC) idea has become an important part of the smart city concept. The main objective of the SPC is to achieve a safe and smooth traffic flow of pedestrians and vehicles in the smart city. In this paper, we present a simple yet efficient localization system which is suitable for locating people over a pedestrian crossing. By adopting the proposed localization system, the people flow over the pedestrian crossing can be observed. Consequently, a safe and efficient traffic flow in the smart city can be achieved. The proposed system utilizes Internet of Things (IoT) transceivers that are carried by the pedestrians or embedded in the pedestrians' smart devices. These transceivers can be activated to transmit a signal every few seconds when the pedestrian passes over a pedestrian crossing. These periodic signals will be received by a single Angle of Arrival (AoA) estimation system to estimate the direction of the pedestrian. Furthermore, the pedestrian direction and the environmental features of the pedestrian crossings are utilized in a 1D particle filter to estimate accurately the pedestrian's location. The proposed system has been validated experimentally in the smart zone of Antwerp city. The experimental results reveal that the proposed localization system can provide an accurate, cost effective and reliable localization solution to this specific problem without violating the pedestrian privacy.

Experimental determination of propagation paths for the ETC system - Equipment development and field test

Electronic Toll Collection (ETC), an application of Dedicated Short Range Wireless Communication (DSRC), had suffered from wrong operations due to multipath problems. To solve this problem, we proposed to apply a simple configured path determination scheme for the ETC system. The system consists of a vector network analyzer, low-noise amplifier, and X-Y positioner and achieves an automatic measurement of the spatial transfer function with emphasis on accurate measurement and reproducibility. For the reliable identification of the propagating paths, 3-D Unitary ESPRIT and sage algorithms were employed. Having developed the system, field experiments at the toll gate of the highway was carried out. In the measurements, we could determine many propagation paths so that the dominant propagation phenomena at the toll gate was identified. They included a ground-canopy twice reflected wave, which was a potential path that caused wrong operation. Consequently, their reflection coefficients and polarization characteristics were investigated. From the results, applicability of the path determination system for short range on-site measurement was confirmed.

Novel Data Detection and Channel Estimation algorithms for BICM-OFDMA Uplink Asynchronous Systems in the Presence of IQ Imbalance

The problem of channel estimation and inphase/quadrature-phase (IQ) imbalance is one of the main challenges that has to be faced by uplink transmission in orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems. The previously reported investigations for such systems are limited to synchronous and uncoded transmission. Furthermore, in these previous works, equalization of the IQ imbalance should be performed after the estimation process in order to properly detect data symbols. In this contribution, the transmit and receive IQ imbalance for uplink OFDMA systems is investigated in the context of asynchronous and bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) transmission. We propose a novel data detector exploiting the unwanted IQ as a beneficial resource to achieve a diversity gain, without the necessity of an additional equalizer. In addition, we develop a novel code-aided algorithm to estimate the propagation delays and the overall channel impulse responses (CIRs), which include the physical CIRs and IQ imbalance occurring at both the transmitters and base station. Since the exact maximum-likelihood (ML) solution to this problem turns out to be too complex for practical purposes, we resort to the space alternating generalized expectation-maximization (sage) algorithm as a low complexity method to perform parameter estimation. The proposed estimation algorithm operates in an iterative way, in which the soft information provided by the channel decoder is utilized as a priori information to refine the estimates. The computational complexity analysis and simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed estimation algorithm and the proposed detector for practical application.

On some near optimal low complexity detectors for MIMO fading channels

We introduce several low complexity sub-optimal MIMO detection schemes based on the List-BLAST algorithm, which exhausts the constellation points in the first layer of a BLAST scheme to generate multiple candidate solutions from which the maximum likelihood solution is determined. The candidates can also be used as initial points for the space alternating generalized expectation-maximization (sage) algorithm to further improve performance. The proposed schemes can achieve close to optimal performance for both hard and soft output detection with lower complexity than that of the sphere detection in our simulation settings.

Code-Aided Modulation Classification algorithm for Multiuser Uplink SC-FDMA Systems

Modulation classification has attracted great interest in rapid deployment in wireless radios for civilian and military applications. While there is a massive amount of works on this topic for single-signal transmissions, a few works are reported in the literature for multi-signal transmissions. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore different modulation classification algorithms for such scenarios. In this work, we propose a novel modulation classification algorithm for multiuser uplink single-carrier frequency division multiple access systems exploiting the channel decoder's soft information as a beneficial resource to improve the classification performance. Starting from the maximum-likelihood principle, we analytically design the proposed algorithm using a space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization approach. Channel estimation is also developed as an auxiliary task for the proposed algorithm. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm is superior to the traditional algorithms with reduced processing time.

A Spherical-Wavefront-Based Scatterer Localization algorithm Using Large-Scale Antenna Arrays

In this letter, a spherical-wavefront-based parametric signal model is proposed by considering the architecture using a large-scale antenna array. A space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (sage)-based localization algorithm is derived and adopted to localize the first- and last-hop scatterers along the propagation paths between the transmitter and the receiver. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the localization algorithm. An outdoor measurement campaign with a 1600-element virtual planar array is carried out to verify the localization performance in reality. Those results show the advantages of using a spherical-wavefront-based signal model and the sage-based algorithm in the scatterer localization.

Multi-user multi-antenna CDMA receivers for asynchronous multipath fading channels

In this paper, we investigate joint channel estimation and signal detection approaches for a multi-user CDMA uplink with a base-station antenna array over asynchronous multipath fading channels. Based on the space alternating generalized expectation-maximization (sage) algorithm, we develop an iterative multiuser receiver to jointly estimate channel response vectors and bit sequences for all the active users at known fractional time delays, and a BER lower bound is derived. A simplified bit detection method is then proposed for multi-rate CDMA systems. Simulation results show that the new iterative receiver performs equally well for both high- and low-rate users, and the BER performance is close to that of the BER lower bound. Wireless Channel Parameter Estimation algorithms: Recent Advances and Future Challenges

Temporal and three-dimensional(3 D) spatial information is important for the characterization of wireless channels. In this paper, the commonly used array signal processing(ASP) methods to estimate channel parameters are summarized. Firstly, algorithms that can be used to estimate azimuth angle of arrival(AAo A) and elevation Ao A(EAo A) are introduced. They include multiple signal classification(MUSIC), estimation of signal parameter via rotational invariance techniques(ESPRIT), and Unitary ESPRIT algorithms. Secondly, algorithms that can be used to jointly estimate delay, AAo A, and EAo A are given. They include joint angle and delay estimation(JADE) MUSIC, JADE ESPRIT, shift-invariance(SI) JADE, and space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization(sage) algorithms. We also propose an improved SIJADE algorithm to further reduce computation complexity by incorporating with the Unitary ESPRIT algorithm. Performance of the above algorithms to extract only spatial information and to jointly extract temporal and spatial information is compared in both synthetic and 60 GHz real channel environments. Simulation results show that with the inclusion of delay estimation, the joint temporal and spatial estimation algorithms can provide better resolution than algorithms estimating only *** data processing results show that MUSIC algorithm can provide comparable results with sage algorithm in estimating AAoA and EAoA. SI-JADE and the improved SI-JADE algorithms are also applicable to process 60 GHz channel measurement ***, MUSIC, SI-JADE, and the improved SI-JADE algorithms can greatly reduce computational burden compared with sage algorithm. At last, some future directions are pointed out.

FDD Channel Inference Methods With Experimental Performance Evaluation

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) attracts considerable interest by increasing the spectral efficiency, and which may be adopted in future communication system. Both base station (BS) and user equipment (UE) can be equipped with large-scale antennas using frequency division duplex (FDD) schemes. The major obstacle that reduces the performance is the overhead due to the reference signal. Moreover, the channel state information (CSI) of the uplink (UL) channel cannot be simply used for downlink (DL) pre-coding. In this paper, we focus on reconstructing wireless channels on a frequency band by observing the channel response on neighboring frequency band. The inference of DL channel is conducted by utilizing parameters of multipath components extracted from UL observations, using high resolution estimation algorithms, e.g. the Space-Alternating Generalized Expectation-maximization (sage). Four calibration methods are proposed to improve the quality of the inferred DL channel response. Those four methods take into account the channel composition based on the availability of the initial channel observations. Their performance is demonstrated by using real massive MIMO measurements. The results show these calibration methods have their individual application scenarios and all outperform in Line-of-Sight (LoS) scenarios. These calibration methods prove a methodological way to improve the correlation of neighboring channel.
