This study demonstrates a signal-to-noise ratio (snr) analysis and estimationalgorithm for efficient phase noise mitigation that can be practically applied to single-carrier frequency-domain-equalisation (SC-FDE) systems that operate in millimetre-wave bands. First, the effect of phase noise in SC-FDE systems is investigated on each of the packet reception processes, namely, channel estimation, snrestimation, and data-field reception. According to the analysis, an snr estimation algorithm is proposed. The performance of minimum-mean-square-error equalisation and conventional phase noise mitigation algorithm can be enhanced using the proposed snrestimation. The effectiveness of the proposed analysis and snr estimation algorithm is verified through the link-level simulation. Compared with the conventional snrestimation and the iterative phase noise mitigation algorithms, the proposed algorithm provides a lower packet-error rate without any iterative decoding process.

In this study, the authors consider a multi-target tracking (MTT) problem in a cluttered environment. Due to the difficulty of the problem, the methods relying only on spatial information such as range, bearing and Doppler velocity can be unreliable. To overcome this, they additionally exploit the amplitude information, commonly provided by radar and sonar, for MTT. However, the usage of amplitude information is not straightforward because the signal-to-noise ratio (snr) should be known in advance or estimated at the same time. To this end, they first propose a novel snr estimation algorithm based on a maximum a posteriori approach, which helps the tracker to exploit the amplitude information effectively. Based on the estimated snr, they then propose a complete framework for MTT, which is mainly composed of data association and track state update parts. They extensively evaluate the proposed system in a series of challenging scenarios, and the experimental results verify the effectiveness and robustness of the authors' methods.

A crucial parameter required for adaptive transmission in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is the signal-to-noise ratio (snr). In this paper, certain modifications to previously proposed preamble-based snr estimator for wireless OFDM systems are suggested in order to improve estimation performance. Proposed modifications, related to DFT interpolation, are based on the adaptive selection of significant channel impulse response (CIR) paths utilizing the average noise power estimate obtained in frequency domain. The modified estimator shows performance improvement of average snrestimation in low snr regime and considerably outperforms original algorithm for snr per subcarrier estimation.
