Experimental and numerical study on steel wire mesh reinforced concrete slab under contact explosion

With the rising of terrorism and rapid urbanization around the world, increasingly more structures are exposed to the threats from accidental and hostile explosion loads. To provide adequate structural protection against blast load, novel materials and strengthening techniques are under fast development. In the present study, a composite slab design aiming at high level blast resistance is studied. In the matrix of high strength self-compacting concrete, besides conventional rebars serving as primary reinforcement, steel wire meshes are embedded and served as secondary reinforcements. Moreover, on the concrete cover layer where the tensile cracks locate, steel fibres are added to provide micro crack-bridging effect. Preliminary numerical simulations adopting coupled Finite Element (FE) and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (sph) are carried out in hydro-code and the results are used as guide for field blast test. Composite slab with optimal design is field tested under 1 kg TNT contact detonation, and the results are compared with slabs made of conventional and ultra-high performance concrete without steel wire meshes. The results demonstrate that slab with steel wire mesh reinforcement develops localized membrane effect when subjected to blast loads and shows better blast resistant capability as compared to the slabs without steel wire meshes. The numerical simulation for forming projectile of depleted uranium alloy with the sph (Smooth Particle Hydrodynamic) algorithm was presented. In the computations the artificial pressures of detonation were used, i.e., the spatial distribution and time distribution were given artificially. To describe the deformed behaviors of the depleted uranium alloy under high pressure and high strain rate, the Johnson_Cook model of materials was introduced. From the numerical simulation the formed projectile velocity, projectile geometry and the minimum of the height of detonation are obtained.

Modeling method and experimental study on the random distribution of abrasive particles in the jet cutting process

The distribution of abrasive particles in fluids is an important research topic in the study of abrasive waterjet cutting processes. However, it is impossible to obtain the accurate distribution law and influencing factors by performing only experiments;therefore, it is necessary to study abrasive waterjet cutting processes with the help of numerical models. The existing numerical models usually adopt the form of artificial settings for the distribution of abrasive particles in fluid. This method cannot accurately simulate the random distribution of particles. In this paper, the random algorithm method is used to simulate the impact azimuth and the random distribution of abrasive particles in water. The smoothed particle hydrodynamics (sph) method is used to simulate the distribution of abrasive particles and the process of jet impingement. The influence of the particle distribution on the simulation results is studied. Comparisons show that the dent formed by the jet impinging on the target with random abrasive particles is similar to the dent from the actual cut, and the contour distribution of the dent is more uniform than that of the cut. The simulation results obtained by the sph method are accurate.

This paper presents a real-time lightweight fluid simulation based on a particle fluid technique developed for mobile environment. The Bullet physics engine and smoothed particle hydrodynamic (sph) fluid algorithm will be used for our lightweight fluid simulation. First, we describe an advanced collision detection mechanism that will be used. By using this method, less computational resources are required. Secondly, we present a simplified sph algorithm where nearby particles are grouped together to minimize the number of calculations. By decreasing the number of particles, an improved computational performance is expected. Finally, the ARM NEON based parallel computing technique was enabled to reduce execution time by lowering the number of arithmetic instructions. Several experiments are carried out where the experimental results indicate the first technique led to a 50% improvement in performance. The second technique provided a 17% overall improvement. The third technique delivered a performance improvement within the range of 26%-40%. Overall, the experimental results show that the proposed techniques provided an accumulative performance improvement of approximately 120% for all applied methodologies. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Coal-gas outburst is a kind of complex disaster induced by engineer operations in the process of extracting or developing in coal seams. According to the theories of gas seepage and deformation of coal or rock seams, taking consideration of the heterogeneity property of coal or rock materials in mechanics of materials as well as non-linear permeability characteristic of coal or rock materials in the process of deformation and fracture, sph algorithm of LS-DYNA software is used to numerically simulate the coal-gas outburst induced by development in coal seams. Simulation results represent the whole process of coal-gas outburst from the growing, extending and connecting of cracks to final outburst under the impact of gas pressure, ground stress and mechanical properties of coal-rock. The nonlinear nature of the mutation of outburst induced by gradual destruction of the coal or rock materials under the influence of developing operations is revealed, including the evolution of the stress field in the rupture process of the coal or rock material. This provides a theoretical foundation for further understanding the mechanism of coal-gas outburst as well as preventing outburst technology.

Ordinary Fluid Simulation focuses on the effects of the fluid surface, like seas, rivers and lakes, which is massive and unshakable. Few researches have devoted to simulate the phenomenon of fluid in containers, especially the behaviors of contained fluid being moved or tilted. This paper concentrates on dynamic simulation of fluid in containers. Based on Unity3D and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (sph), we proposes an interactive application, which demonstrates how to manipulate fluid in containers, such as shaking a cup of water, tilting and pouring water from one cup to another.

Simulating fluids on screen has been getting many spotlights because it is one of the most challenging tasks in computer science area. So we developed a real-time fluid simulation on android platform with sph fluid algorithm and Bullet physics engine, and then rendered it with OpenGL vertical bar ES. Because of the limitation of smartphone environment, the simulation does not show a good performance. We suggest three methods to improve the performance of the demo. Firstly, we enable parallel computing with ARM NEON to accelerate mathematical computation. Secondly, we simplify the sph algorithm with particle-forming technique. Finally, we optimize rendering skill with SSFR technique. We carry out experiments to validate the methods we suggest. The experiments results show that the first method improved the performance by about 26% to 40%, the second method improved the performance by about 50%, and the third method helped us represent a more smooth and natural fluid surface. Therefore, these methods are proved to be able to improve the performance of the real-time 3D fluid effect simulation significantly.

Numerical investigation and experimental study on fracture processes of central flawed sandstone Brazilian discs

The propagations and connections of rock mass fissures are direct factors that lead to failure of rock engineering structures. Based on this, the traditional kernel function in the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (sph) method was improved, which could simulate the progressive propagation processes of rock fissures. Brazilian disc samples of red sandstone with different fissure angles were prepared, and experiments on the crack propagations of Brazilian discs under uniaxial compression were carried out combined with digital image correlation technology. The results show that when the inclination angle of the prefabricated fissure is 0 degrees, cracks initiate from the middle of the fissure and propagate along the loading direction;"Wing cracks" occur at prefabricated fissure inclination angles of 30 degrees similar to 60 degrees;when the inclination angle is 90 degrees, cracks propagate along the direction of the prefabricated fissure. The peak load of the samples first decreases and then increases with increasing inclination angle, and was minimum when the angle was 60 degrees. An improved sph algorithm was used to simulate the crack growth of Brazilian discs with different fissure angles, and the simulation results are consistent with the experimental results, which verifies the rationality of the proposed method. However, most rock engineering problems are three-dimensional, so future research directions should focus on the development of 3D sph parallel programs.

Protective Design of a Warship Broadside Liquid Cabin

Based on the traditional Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (sph) algorithm, the linked-list search algorithm combined with the variable smoothing length and square support domain was put forward to improve the calculation efficiency and guarantee the calculation accuracy. The physical process of high velocity fragment impact on a broadside liquid cabin was programmed for simulation. The numerical results agreed well with those of the general software ANSYS AUTODYN, which verifies the effectiveness and feasibility of the numerical method. From the perspective of the outer plate thickness of the liquid cabin, the width of the liquid cabin, and incident angle of the fragment, the influence of these parameters on protective mechanisms was analyzed to provide a basis for protective design of a broadside liquid cabin. Results show that the influence of outer plate thickness is not obvious; therefore, the conventional design can be adopted in the design of the outer plate. The width of the liquid cabin has a great influence on the residual velocity of the fragment and the width of the liquid cabin should be designed to be as wide as possible under the premise of meeting other requirements. There is a certain incident angle in which the velocity attenuation of the fragment is most obvious, and the high-pressure zone near the inner plate is asymmetric. The inner plate of liquid cabin should be strengthened according to the hull form, principal dimensions, and vulnerable points.
