A new optimization approach based on Kriging interpolation and sequential quadratic programming algorithm for end milling refractory titanium alloys

Refractory titanium alloys are often used in aerospace industry for applications requiring high temperature strength and high mechanical resistance. However, the main problems encountered when machining this kind of material are the low material removal rate and the short cutting tool life. Due to their hard nature, an effective manufacturing strategy is required by industrials to optimize cutting parameters and improve machining efficiency. In this work, a new technique of optimization for dry machining refractory titanium alloys has been developed. The optimisation procedure is a new strategy based on both response surface method with "Kriging interpolation" and sequential quadratic programming algorithm. In comparison with previous models taken from the literature, two functions have been formulated in the machining problem to describe the non linear and complex relationship between variables and responses. The first function called "objective function" represents the volume of material removal produced during the cutting tool life and which has to be maximised. The second function called "constraint function" represents the surface roughness and has to be taken below a critical value. Thanks to this new approach, a robust optimization algorithm has been carried out to optimize cutting conditions taking into account productivity and quality. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. A globally and superlinearly convergent feasible QP-free method for nonlinear programming

In this paper, we propose a QP-free type algorithm which solves the problem of minimizing a smooth function subject to smooth inequality constraints. In contrast with the sqp methods, each iteration this algorithm only needs to solve systems of linear equations which are derived from the equality part in the KKT first order optimality conditions. It is observed that, if the quasi-Newton direction is zero, we can obtain a direction of descent by dropping a constraint from the active set at the current iterate. A high order modified direction is introduced in order to prevent Maratos effect. Global and superlinear convergence are proven under some suitable conditions. (c) 2004 Elsevier Inc. A robust algorithm or optimization with general equality and inequality constraints

An algorithm for general nonlinearly constrained optimization is presented, which solves an unconstrained piecewise quadratic subproblem and quadratic programming subproblem at each iterate. The algorithm is robust since it can circumvent the difficulties associated with the possible inconsistency of QP subproblem of the original sqp method. Moreover, the algorithm can converge to point which satis es certain first-order necessary optimality condition even when the original problem is itself infeasible, which is feature of Burke and Han's methods [ Math. Programming, 43 ( 1989), pp. 277-303]. Unlike Burke and Han's methods, our algorithm does not introduce additional bound constraints. The algorithm solves the same subproblems as the Han Powell sqp algorithm at feasible points of the original problem. Under certain assumptions, it is shown that the algorithm coincides with the Han-Powell method when the iterates are sufficiently close to the solution. Some global convergence results are proved and locally superlinear convergence results are also obtained. Preliminary numerical results are reported.

Exergy efficiency analysis of a shell and tube heat exchanger condenser based on its different design parameters

This paper evaluates the optimum coolant temperature considering the exergy loss in a shell and tube condenser in which vapor is at its saturated temperature. First, exergy loss was formulated mathematically and then presented as a function of operating temperatures and optimum coolant and steam mass flow rates. The optimization problem was defined by full condensation of vapor in a condenser and solved by a sequential quadratic programming method. The optimization results were obtained for an industrial condenser for two condensate temperatures of 46 degrees C and 54 degrees C. When the upstream steam mass flow rate increased, the optimum coolant temperature and the exergy efficiency decreased, and the exergy loss also increased simultaneously. The results showed higher values for the higher condensate temperature of 54 degrees C compared with that for 46 degrees C. For instance, if the condensate temperature increases from 46 degrees C to 54 degrees C, the coolant temperature will be increased from 16.76 degrees C to 25.17 degrees C. In addition, by assuming the ambient temperature of 15 degrees C, the exergy loss will be decreased from 172.5 to 164.6 kW. A linear relationship was also shown between the exergy efficiency and the dimensionless temperature, which is presented as a ratio of the temperature difference rate between inlet cooling water and ambient temperatures to the temperature difference rate of condensate and ambient temperatures.

Constrained optimization in seismic reflection tomography: a Gauss-Newton augmented Lagrangian approach

Seismic reflection tomography is a method for determining a subsurface velocity model from the traveltimes of seismic waves reflecting on geological interfaces. From an optimization viewpoint, the problem consists in minimizing a non-linear least-squares function measuring the mismatch between observed traveltimes and those calculated by ray tracing in this model. The introduction of a priori information on the model is crucial to reduce the under-determination. The contribution of this paper is to introduce a technique able to take into account geological a priori information in the reflection tomography problem expressed as inequality constraints in the optimization problem. This technique is based on a Gauss-Newton (GN) sequential quadratic programming approach. At each GN step, a solution to a convex quadratic optimization problem subject to linear constraints is computed thanks to an augmented Lagrangian algorithm. Our choice for this optimization method is motivated and its original aspects are described. First applications on real data sets are presented to illustrate the potential of the approach in practical use of reflection tomography.

The production of high-strength clinched joints is the ultimate goal of the manufacturing industry. The determination of optimum tool shapes in the clinch forming process is needed to achieve the required high strength of clinched joints. The design of the tools (punch and die) is crucial since the strength of the clinched joints is closely related to the tools geometry. To increase the strength of clinched joints, an optimisation procedure using the response surface methodology, based on an adaptive moving target zone, is presented. The cost function studied here is defined in terms of the maximum value of the tensile force computed during the simulation of the sheets separation. Limitations on the geometrical parameters due to feasibility issues are also taken into account. The kriging interpolation is used to provide an approximation to the optimisation problem and to build the response surfaces.

Due to its railroad activities, the SNCF (French National Railway Company) tries to anticipate oil rarefaction and to improve its commitment in environment protection. Thus, one of its research programs in energetic deals with the hybridization of the diesel-electric railway traction. The identified problematic corresponds to the design of a multi-source and multi-storage system. To solve this problematic, a design tool by optimization of the hybrid system is presented. The models of each energetic elements and the energy management strategy based on filter method are implemented in CADES environment. The optimal formulation to design the hybrid electric locomotive is presented. A discussion on the importance of selecting the variables to be contained in the optimization, at the modeling lever rather than the optimization is presented. Finally, results for a shunting railway application are proposed and discussed.

Today fuzzy logic is used to solve various engineering issues. In this paper a novel approach for tuning the PID controller for Gripping-Belt of Herbal machine Harvester speed control is proposed. Designing the values of proportional, integral and derivative constants are divided into three stages one for each constant. The Optimal Fuzzy system identifies the constants at each stage. The Kp, Ki and Kd are set by the optimized fuzzy logic controller to improve the performance of rise time, peak overshoot, oscillation and the settling time. Gripping-belt for herbal machine harvester with the control issues were discussed, given the gripping-belt approximation model with a control system using Matlab/Simulink and Fuzzy Logic Toolbox software kit built with herbal medicine harvester holding a simulation model and controller. The control system of the conventional fuzzy control, PID control and optimal fuzzy self-tuning PID control simulation results show that the optimal fuzzy self-tuning PID control for better dynamic response to achieve the desired control effect.

In this paper, the importance of electrical machine was involved. So researches are oriented to make a progress in this domain. Permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) is selected to be studied in this work. Two optimization methods are used in the design of the PMSM for the application of in wheel motor of electric cars. The first one is sequential quadratic programming (sqp) algorithm using the interface Sophemis developed in L2EP laboratory which is a deterministic method and the second is NSGAII algorithm which is a stochastic method. Finally, a comparison between the two methods, using pareto front, is discussed and the appropriate one is then choosed.

Based on the theory of structure impact dynamic and numerical optimization, application of sqp algorithm in nonlinear parameter inversion is demonstrated in this paper by combining the optimization software and finite element software. Parameter inversion of thin-walled cylinder subjected to axial impact load is studied. The material parameters of thin-walled cylinder are obtained from inversion;besides, the whole process of numerical optimization parameter inversed method is demonstrated.
