A refined design method, based upon known principles, is presented for the design of sampled-data SISO control systems. Based upon the Fourier analysis of a sampled signal and the Padé approximation, a sampled-data system may be approximated by a pseudo-continuous-time (PCT) control system. This approximation of a sampled-data system permits the use of continuous-time domain methods for designing cascade and/or feedback controllers based upon step-response specifications. When the rules governing the use of the Padé approximation and the Tustin transformation are satisfied, the PCT approach is a valuable technique for the design of sampled-data control systems, especially when the sampling time T is much smaller than 1 s. For T < 1 s, the accuracy needed in performing the calculations in the z-domain increases as T decreases. The same degree of accuracy is not required while designing the controller in the s-plane. A design technique based upon the use of the PCT system is presented along with examples. The associated controller implementation problems are discussed.

Optimal H₂ filtering for sampled-data systems with measurement delays and packet dropouts

This study examines the H-2 filtering problem for sampled-data systems that are subject to measurement delays and packet dropouts. The phenomenon of packet dropout is different for each observation component and is described as an independent and identically distributed Bernoulli process, which is more general than the scalar packet dropout case. The reorganized observation technique is introduced herein to address the time delays in the observations. An optimal filter is constructed using a deterministic continuous-time system with finite jumps, where the filter gains are determined by integrating a specific continuous-time Riccati equation with finite jumps, based on a suitable algebraic Lyapunov equation. Compared with the discrete-time filter, the optimal filter can provide the state estimates of the measurement sampling intervals and measurement sampling moments. Two simulation examples are explored to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper focuses on the stabilization problem of Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems via a sampled-data controller using a fuzzy dependent functional. By employing a property of convex combination, a new approach to deal with the time derivatives of the fuzzy membership functions (FMFs) in the stabilization conditions is proposed, and less conservative conditions are derived in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Moreover, the proposed approach introduces a switching function which opens up possibilities to use a switched controller and take advantage of its benefits well known in the literature. Therefore, two sampled-data control strategies are proposed, where the first one is a fuzzy controller and the second is a robust switched controller, that does not require the expressions of the FMFs to implement the control law, which guarantees the robustness of the controlled system in cases where the FMFs depend on uncertain parameters. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategies is verified by two examples.

Zero order hold discrete time equivalents of sampled data plants with multiple input and output delays are derived. The delay is not assumed to be an integral multiple of the sample period nor is it assumed identical for all inputs or outputs. It is proven that the discrete equivalent is both observable and controllable iff, (i) the discrete time equivalent with zero integral delay is both observable and controllable, (ii) the number of plant inputs and outputs is equal and (iii) there are no transmission zeros at the origin. These are useful design considerations when implementation delays are to be lumped with a discretized plant model.

The problem of robust H-infinity controller design for sampled-data systems with time-varying norm-bounded parameter uncertainties in the state matrices is investigated. Attention is focused on the design of a causal sampled-data controller which guarantees the asymptotical stability of the closed-loop system and reduces the effect of the disturbance input on the controlled Output to a prescribed H-infinity performance bound for all admissible uncertainties. Sufficient condition for the solvability of the problem is in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) technique. It is shown that the desired H-infinity controller can be constructed by solving certain LMIs. An illustrative example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Digital control of continuous time processes is usually designed on the basis of a constant sampling rate. In some industrial environments it is difficult to preserve this simplification, so it is necessary to assume nonconventional sampling patterns. The problem could be much more complex if there were various subprocesses with different performances either in time or frequency domains. A new way of modelling these kind of situations is presented. The approach deals with input increments and exactly matches the plant behaviour in an ideal case. The parameters of this description present a specific physical meaning.< >

This paper present a new effective algorithm for the optimal realization of digital controller structures using the delta operator for sampled data systems subject to Finite-Word-Length (FWL) constraints. The problem is formulated as a non-linear programming to provide an easy and efficient optimization tool to solve such complex problem. Simulation results of the optimum realizations of digital controller structures are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.
