This paper presents a novel multi-filtering framework for achieving scalable PAttern-driven Region-adaptive Compression (SPARC) of imagery. Based on a pattern-driven image perception, SPARC achieves efficient compression by modeling and encoding different (simple, structural and complex) visual patterns. Experimental results using various image datasets and comparison with the latest image compression standard corroborate the feasibility and efficiency of the SPARC technique.

The canonical representation of speech constitutes a perfect reconstruction (PR) analysis-synthesis system. Its parameters are the autoregressive (AR) model coefficients, the pitch period and the voiced and unvoiced components of the excitation represented as transform coefficients. Each set of parameters may be operated on independently. A time-frequency unvoiced excitation (TFUNEX) model is proposed that has high time resolution and selective frequency resolution. Improved time-frequency fit is obtained by using for antialiasing cancellation the clustering of pitch-synchronous transform tracks defined in the modulation transform domain. The TFUNEX model delivers high-quality speech while compressing the unvoiced excitation representation about 13 times over its raw transform coefficient representation for wideband speech.

A multiview stereo video FGS (Fine Granular Scalability) scalable scheme is presented in this paper. The similarity among adjacent views is fully utilized, A tradeoff scheme is presented in order to adapt to different demands of Quality First (QF) and View First (VF) of the decoder. The scheme is composed of three cases: 1, P, B frame. The middle view is encoded as the basic layer, while the other views are predicted from the partly retrieved FGS enhancement layers of adjacent views. The FGS enhancement layer of the current view is generated based on that. Experimental results show that the presented scheme is of more flexible and extensive scalable characteristic, which could better adapt different demands on view image quality and stereo immersion of different users.

Lossless or near-lossless video compression with a certain maximum absolute reconstruction error is required in many professional applications like archiving or medical imaging. However, lossless coding resulting in rather high bit rates and near-lossless coding being traditionally used and especially optimized for still image coding prevents these techniques from practical application. Consequently, this paper proposes a system for scalable lossy to near-lossless video compression, where the inter picture correlations are exploited by the base layer codec and near-lossless enhancement layer compression delivers the required final reconstruction fidelity in terms of maximum absolute reconstruction error. For the proposed near-lossless enhancement layer codec we extended the Sample-based weighted prediction for Enhancement Layer coding (SELC) scheme, and the HEVC reference software is used for base layer coding. The experimental results show significant average savings compared to both JPEG-LS single layer coding (27%) and also JPEG-LS for enhancement layer coding (about 14 percentage points).

scalable image compression allows reconstructing complete images through partially decoding. It plays an important role for image transmission and storage. In this paper, we study the problem of feature decorrelation for Deep Neural Network (DNN) based image codec. Inspired by self-attention mechanism [1], we design a transformer-based decorrelation unit (DU) and adopt it in our scalable image compression framework to reduce the redundancy of feature representations at different levels. Experimental results demonstrate that proposed framework outperforms the state-of-the-art DNN-based scalable image codec and conventional scalable image codecs in terms of MS-SSIM. We also conduct ablation experiments which explicitly verify the effectiveness of decorrelation unit in our scheme.

The paper presents a scalable compressive sampling (CS) scheme for video acquisition. The proposed solution enables progressive reconstruction of video frames with novel measurement matrices. Simulation results show significant performance improvements over the traditional CS technique for the base layer and slightly better performance for the final enhancement layer.

Due to the limited computational capabilities of edge devices, deep learning inference can be quite expensive. One remedy is to compress and transmit point cloud data over the network for server-side processing. Unfortunately, this approach can be sensitive to network factors, including available bitrate. Luckily, the bitrate requirements can be reduced without sacrificing inference accuracy by using a machine task-specialized codec. In this paper, we present a scalable codec for point-cloud data that is specialized for the machine task of classification, while also providing a mechanism for human viewing. In the proposed scalable codec, the "base" bitstream supports the machine task, and an "enhancement" bitstream may be used for better input reconstruction performance for human viewing. We base our architecture on PointNet++, and test its efficacy on the ModelNet40 dataset. We show significant improvements over prior non-specialized codecs.

Digital holography is an emerging technology for 3D visualization which is expected to dethrone conventional stereoscopic devices in the future. Aside from their specific signal properties, high quality holograms with broad viewing angles contain massive amount of data. For a reasonable transmission time, efficient scalable compression schemes are needed to bridge the gap between the overwhelming volume of data and the limited bandwidth of the communication channels. The viewpoint scalability is a powerful property since it allows to encode and transmit only the information corresponding to the observer's view. However, this approach imposes an online encoding at the server which may increase the latency of the transmission chain. To overcome this hurdle, we propose a scalable compression framework based on Gabor-wavelets decomposition, where the whole hologram is encoded offline. First, the observer plane is divided into spatial blocks. Then, the Gabor atoms are assigned to these blocks by exploiting the duality between Gabor wavelets and light rays. The atoms of each block are then classified into different layers according to their importance for the reconstruction and encoded in packets. At the decoder side, the atoms' packets are progressively decoded based on the viewer's position. Then, the corresponding sub-hologram is generated using a GPU implementation. Results show that our approach enables a practical progressive streaming of digital holograms with a low latency.

We present the ***-VBR winning candidate codec recently selected by Question 9 of Study Group 16 (Q9/16) of ITU-T as a baseline for the development of a scalable solution for wideband speech and audio compression at rates between 8 kb/s and 32 kb/s. The Q9/16 codec is an embedded codec comprising 5 layers where higher layer bitstreams can be discarded without affecting the decoding of the lower layers. The two lower layers are based on the CELP technology where the core layer takes advantage of signal classification based encoding. The higher layers encode the weighted error signal from lower layers using overlap-add transform coding. The codec has been designed with the primary objective of a high-performance wideband speech coding for error-prone telecommunications channels, without compromising the quality for narrowband/wideband speech or wideband music signals. The codec performance is demonstrated with selected test results.

Time Varying Meshes (TVMs) are sequences of three-dimensional models created from multi-camera images. Like other kinds of mesh sequences, it has a great need for compression, in order to become largely usable. Alongside with other types of signals, mesh coding has received considerable attention towards scalable coding, which is a very important feature in many kinds of coded signals. scalable mesh coding can be divided basically into three types of scalability: temporal, spatial and SNR (signal-to-noise ratio). In this work we focus on the use of block-based and run-length encoding aiming at achieving a combination of spatial and SNR scalability for the geometrical information of TVM. Our results have shown that it is possible to achieve scalability with only a minor increase in rate over a previous coding method.
