This paper proposes an efficient wavelet-based coding scheme with fine grain scalability, where the base layer is encoded with a novel designed of wavelet-based coder, and the enhancement layer is encoded with progressive fine granularity scalable (PFGS) coding. This algorithm involves multi-frame motion compensation, rate-distortion optimizing strategy with Lagrangian cost function and context-based adaptive arithmetic coding. In order to improve efficiency of the enhancement layer coding, an improved motion estimation scheme that uses both information from the base layer and the enhancement layer is also proposed in this paper. The novel designed of wavelet-based coder significantly improves the coding efficiency of the base layer compared with MPEG-4 ASP (Advanced Simple Profile) and H.26L TML9. The PFGS coding is a significant improvement over MPEG-4 FGS at the enhancement layer. Experiments show that single layer coding efficiency gain of the proposed scheme is about 2.0-3.00 and 0.3-1.00 compared with MPEG-4 ASP and H.26L TML9, respectively. The overall coding efficiency gain of the proposed scheme is about 4.0-5.0dB compared with MPEG-4 FGS.

A new scalable audio coding scheme is introduced in this paper. Its core idea is to create one additional scalability dimension during the encoding process for the purpose of generating a plural of scalable sub-bitstreams. Based on the multiple sub-streams, a smart truncator is designed that can truncate these sub-bitstreams with optimal rate-distortion (R-D) trade-off. Benefited from the flexible R-D trade-off, the proposed new scheme could, with in a wide bit rate range, out perform those traditional scalable coding schemes, which usually provides a fixed R-D relationship designed at a specified bit rate. To verify the performance, the proposed scheme is further implemented based on a priorart scalable audio codec. Significant quality improvement is observed from the new codec via a series of subjective listening tests.

The enhancement layer in many scalable coding algorithms is composed of residual coding information. There is another type of information that can be transmitted instead of (or in addition to) residual coding. Since the encoder has access to the original sequence, it can utilize adaptive format conversion (AFC) to generate the enhancement layer and transmit the different format conversion methods as enhancement data. This paper investigates the use of adaptive format conversion information as enhancement data in scalable video coding. Experimental results are shown for a wide range of base layer qualities and enhancement bitrates to determine when AFC can improve video scalability. Since the parameters needed for AFC are small compared to residual coding, AFC can provide video scalability at low enhancement layer bitrates that are not possible. with residual coding. In addition, AFC can also be used in addition to residual coding to improve video scalability at higher enhancement layer bitrates. Adaptive format conversion has not been studied in detail, but many scalable applications may benefit from it. An example of an application that AFC is well-suited for is the migration path for digital television where AFC can provide immediate video scalability as well as assist future migrations.

We propose a method that hierarchically quantizes wideband Modified Discrete Cosine Transform (MDCT) coefficients by developing a module that has a transform coding method primarily for audio as the basic structural unit and freely using this module multiple times at the desired frequencies. The major feature of this method is to implement a simple structure having a high degree of freedom in scalable coding to hierarchically quantize MDCT coefficients over a wide band of frequencies by sharing the proposed module and using it multiple times. This paper presents examples using combinations of the module operating at a sampling frequency of 48 kHz and a bit rate of at least 8 kbit/s. In this example, a bit rate of at least 8 kbit/s and a reconstructed frequency band of at least 4 kHz can de selected as the objective. Subjective evaluation tests are performed to verify the effectiveness oft he proposed method. (C) 2001 Scripta Technica

The past decade has seen significant advancements in computer vision technologies, resulting in an increasing consumption of images and videos by both human and machine. Although machines are usually the primary consumers, there are many applications where human involvement is indispensable. In this paper, we propose a novel image coding technique that targets machines while ensuring compatibility with human consumption. The proposed codec generates two distinct bitstreams: the reconstruction feature bitstreams and the enhancement feature bitstreams. The former are designed to facilitate image reconstruction for human consumption and vision tasks for machine consumption, while the latter are optimized for high-quality vision tasks. To achieve this goal, we introduce the Mask Multilayer Fusion Encoder (MMFE), which integrates multi-scale visual prior masks into partial channel features of the encoder. Additionally, due to the significant distortion of features at low bitrates, we propose a Local Feature Fusion Module (LFFM) that aggregates semantic information from the reconstruction features to obtain enhancement features, so as to improve the performance of vision tasks. Our experimental results demonstrate that our scalable codec provides significant bitrate savings of 26-77%\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\%$$\end{document} on machine vision tasks compared to state-of-the-art image codecs, while maintaining comparable performance in terms of image reconstruction. Our proposed codec represents a significant advancement in the field of image coding, with the potential to improve both human and machine consumption of visual media.

Fast matching pursuit method using property of symmetry and classification for scalable video coding

Matching pursuit is a signal expansion technique whose efficiency for motion compensated residual image has been successfully demonstrated in the MPEG-I development. However, one of the practical concerns related to applying matching pursuit algorithm to real-time coding of video is its massive computation required for finding atoms. This paper proposes a new fast method based on three properties of basis functions used in the signal expansion. The first one is the symmetry property of the 1-D bases. The second one is that one can preclude many bases that cannot be atom by checking a simple mathematical condition. The last one is the classification property of 2-D bases in a given dictionary. Experimental result shows that our method can perform the same matching pursuit without any image degradation using only about 40% of computational load required by the conventional fast method based on separability of 2-D Gabor dictionary. Furthermore, if negligible quality degradation is allowed, the method can be extended to perform matching pursuit with only about 10% of the computational load required by the conventional fast method. We apply the proposed fast matching pursuit method to scalable coding of video with two layers.

Joint super-resolution-based fast face image coding for human and machine vision

As the Internet of Things continues to grow and thrive, more and more data are consumed by machines for intelligent analysis. How to simultaneously support fast machine vision analysis and obtain high-quality reconstructed images to serve human vision has become a problem that needs to be solved. We propose a fast face image compression scheme based on a Joint Super-Resolution Network (JSRNet), where images are encoded hierarchically to support machine vision and human vision. To support fast machine vision tasks, we compress the downsampled version of the input image at the encoding side and implement base layer decoding at the decoding side with a lightweight super-resolution network, thus effectively reducing the codec time. To obtain high-quality reconstructed images, we design a content transfer module to transfer the visual information generated by the base layer to the enhancement layer. The joint optimization of the base layer and the enhancement layer also allows them to better cooperate to achieve better performance. We verify the performance of this scheme on the facial landmark detection task, and the experimental results show that our method saves more bit-rate and achieves more accurate facial landmark detection results with faster codec time than baselines. The reconstructed images are more in line with human visual characteristics, and the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM) are also improved significantly.

The accelerated proliferation of visual content and the rapid development of machine vision technologies bring significant challenges in delivering visual data on a gigantic scale, which shall be effectively represented to satisfy both human and machine requirements. In this work, we investigate how hierarchical representations derived from the advanced generative prior facilitate constructing an efficient scalable coding paradigm for human-machine collaborative vision. Our key insight is that by exploiting the StyleGAN prior, we can learn three-layered representations encoding hierarchical semantics, which are elaborately designed into the basic, middle, and enhanced layers, supporting machine intelligence and human visual perception in a progressive fashion. With the aim of achieving efficient compression, we propose the layer-wise scalable entropy transformer to reduce the redundancy between layers. Based on the multi-task scalable rate-distortion objective, the proposed scheme is jointly optimized to achieve optimal machine analysis performance, human perception experience, and compression ratio. We validate the proposed paradigm's feasibility in face image compression. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed paradigm over the latest compression standard Versatile Video coding (VVC) in terms of both machine analysis as well as human perception at extremely low bitrates (< 0.01 bpp), offering new insights for human-machine collaborative compression.
