In wireless sensor networks that consist of a large number of low-power, short-lived, unreliable sensors, one of the main design challenges is to obtain long system lifetime, as well as maintain sufficient sensing coverage and reliability. A critical issue in wireless sensor networks is represented by the limited availability of energy within network nodes; therefore making good uses of energy is must. In this paper, we propose to design an algorithm for finding out those nodes who are the neighbors of that node which is going to turn off for preserving battery power and take the responsibility of the sensing area on behalf of the turning node so that power consumption as well as preservation will be balanced.

The task duplication based scheduling in a new approach to the scheduling problems. Although the task duplication based scheduling (TDS) algorithm proposed by Darbha and Agrawal generates an optimal schedule, the optimality condition is very restricted. Thus, Park and Choe proposed an extended TDS algorithm whose optimality condition is less restricted than that of the algorithm, but the condition is very complex. In this paper, we provide a greedy algorithm whose schedule length is shorter than both of the algorithms. The time complexity of our algorithm is in O(|V|/sup 2/), where |V| represents the number of tasks.

As the demands for wireless data services have increased, various packet services should be supported satisfying the different quality of service (QoS) requirements. We propose a per-user throughput based scheduling algorithm to support both fairness among users and different QoS requirements. Link-level and system-level simulators for the 1xEV-DO rev. A system are developed for performance evaluation. Through our system-level simulator, the performance of the proposed scheduling algorithm is compared with that of other three conventional scheduling algorithms in terms of fairness, per-user throughput, and system throughput. The result shows that the proposed scheduling algorithm yields the best performance result in terms of fairness. The proposed scheduling algorithm can be utilized to support both fairness among users and different QoS requirements for various packet services in wireless data communications

This paper presents a novel video scheduling algorithm for streaming MPEG video over multi-user shared wireless link, in which video sessions are scheduled based on both location-dependent channel condition and instantaneous frame delay. This algorithm also employs a pro-active frame discard mechanism to discard potential problematic frames. The numerical results show that the proposed algorithm is able to significantly improve link throughput and guarantee long-term fairness.

Considers the problem of scheduling packets in a multiplexer, the aim being to provide sufficient service to each traffic stream such that their objectives are just satisfied, thus maximising the resources available for other streams. We propose a novel scheduling scheme based on stochastic learning automata which is capable of satisfying a variety of delay requirements in a dynamic traffic environment, and we show via simulation that the scheme outperforms several existing scheduling algorithms.

Adaptive token bank fair queuing (ATBFQ) algorithm has been proposed as a cross-layer scheduling technique for 4G wireless systems recently. This algorithm takes higher layer quality of service (QoS) attributes such as priorities, interflow fairness, and delay constraints into account. By selecting the user terminals (UTs) in a certain prioritized manner derived from QoS attributes, the performance of the UTs, suffering from high interference and/or shadowing in particular, can be improved. The ATBFQ algorithm has been tested in a multicell environment in the presence of intercell interference by comparing with reference Score Based (SB) and Round Robin (RR) algorithms. In this paper, we further analyze ATBFQ primarily with regard to fairness along with other performance metrics accessed in a more elaborate system considering varying interference and loading conditions. Furthermore, an adaptive method for the allocation of resources is proposed for ATBFQ parameter selection, and is shown to have better performance in various loading conditions. It is observed from simulation results that ATBFQ with adaptive parameter selection outperforms the reference schemes in terms of queuing delay and UT throughput for different network loading cases.

This paper focuses on the resource scheduling of LTE-Advanced system with carrier aggregation. With different fading characters, the aggregated carriers have different coverage between each other. Consequently, the carrier aggregation causes that the number of carriers which users can be scheduled on is various. The allocation fairness can not be achieved with the original proportional fair (PF) scheduling algorithm, since the PF assumes that all users can be scheduled on the entire spectrum resources. Thus, a PF scheduling algorithm based on user grouping (UG-PF) is proposed. The users are partitioned into specific groups according to the number of carriers that they can be scheduled on. Furthermore, a modified scheduling policy is obtained based on the average channel access probability of different user groups. Simulation results demonstrate that the UG-PF algorithm can accomplish better fairness among users compared with the original PF algorithm.

Multiprocessor architectures are becoming more attractive for embedded systems, and also for multimedia embedded systems. In multimedia embedded systems, there exist both hard real-time tasks and multimedia stream with QoS guarantee. In this context, researched on integrated schedule of both hard real-time tasks and streams are urgent affairs. This paper analyzes the shortcomings of the current approach - multimedia server, and then based on the DBP algorithm, proposes an algorithm which also considers the resource constraint. According to the different budget schemes, greedy algorithm and optimistic algorithm are brought up. Results show the performance of the algorithms.

Traffic today is broadband and bursty by nature. Extended overloads contribute to network congestion and increase the probability of buffer overruns and packet discarding. How to reduce the CLR (cell loss ratio) is an important issue that must eventually be confronted. In this work, we propose the prediction-based longest queue first (PLQF) scheduling algorithm. During scheduling, the scheduler considers not only the queue length, but also the incoming traffic. Based on that information, the resource is allocated to the user with the highest probability of overflow. The scheduler can adjust the queue lengths in advance to cater to the incoming traffic, targeting to minimize CLR and improve the buffer utilisation. Theoretical analysis shows that the PLQF algorithm can lead to a lower CLR than the conventional LQF algorithm, especially for bursty traffic. Simulation results prove this to be true. Compared with conventional algorithms, the PLQF algorithm can reduce CLR by 10%-60%. Therefore, the PLQF algorithm is promising as an efficient scheduling algorithm.
