Wireless adhoc networks consist of nodes interconnected by wireless multi-hop communication paths. Such networks exhibit simulated mobility, where the topological changes are caused by nodes coming up or going down. These networks also exhibit complex overlapping of flow paths. This in turn leads to severe contention in between flows as well as between the sub-flows of the same flow. In this paper, we analyze the unfairness of IEEE 802.11, in case it is extended for multi-hop networks. Thereafter we demonstrate how a simple, distributed algorithm can be put in place to approximate an ideal scheduler like round-robin and provide fair access to all the flows. Our simulation results clearly show that such an approach outscores the existing standard on fairness grounds. Additionally we also gain in terms of throughput by reducing the number of collisions.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a fast shared packet buffer for throughput rates of at least 10 Gbps using RLDRAM II memory. A complex packet buffer controller is implemented on an Altera FPGA and interfaced to the memory. Four RLDRAM II devices are combined to store the packet data and one RLDRAM II device is used to store a linked-list of the packet memory addresses which is maintained by the packet buffer controller. The architecture is pipelined and optimised to combat the latencies involved with RLDRAM II technologies to enable a high performance low cost packet buffer implementation.

Most of today's real-time embedded systems consist of a heterogeneous mix of fully-programmable processors, fixed-function components or hardware accelerators, and partially-programmable engines. Hence, system designers are faced with an array of implementation possibilities for an application at hand. Such possibilities typically come with different tradeoffs involving cost, power consumption and packaging constraints. As a result, a designer is no longer interested in one implementation that meets the specified real-time constraints (i.e. is schedulable), but would rather like to identify all schedulable implementations that expose the different possible performance tradeoffs. In this paper we formally define this multicriteria schedulability analysis problem and derive a polynomial-time approximation algorithm for solving it. This result is interesting because the problem of optimally computing even one schedulable solution in our setup (and in most common setups) is computationally intractable (NP-hard). Further, our algorithm is reasonably easy to implement, returns good quality (approximate) solutions, and offers significant speedups over optimally computing all schedulable tradeoffs

This paper presents a new approach that can be used to speed up SystemC simulations by automatically optimizing the model for simulation. The work addresses the inefficiency of the standard SystemC scheduler that may lead in some situations to unnecessary wake-up calls, as well as unnecessary code execution. The method presented analyzes the SystemC code to automatically extract signal dependencies based on a set of rules. This information is then used to split large processes into smaller ones. Process splitting is performed by a tool -SplitPro- which generates an optimized code that can be run on any standard SystemC engine. SplitPro was used to analyze the description of an Alpha super scalar processor and optimize some of its modules. A speed gain of up to 23% in simulation time was achieved over a number of split processes

In recent years, multimedia and game applications have experienced rapid growth at an explosive rate both in quantity and complexity. Since these applications typically demand 1010 to 1011 operations to be executed per second, higher processing capability is expected. Therefore, stream processors are becoming popular because of its performance advantages in the domains of signal processing, multimedia and etc. To provide sufficient computing capability, multi-SIMD units are employed in the stream processors. Moreover, to overcome the centralized register file constraint, hierarchical register organization is proposed and widely used in stream processors. In upper level of the hierarchy, distributed register file (DRF) becomes the dominant design and there are explicit interconnections among the DRFs managed by the compiler in a VLIW manner. Moreover, in order to further exploit the nice locality characteristics in multimedia applications, the lower level is a multi-banked register file where each bank is accessed by several SIMD units through a shared data bus. We will refer to the architecture with such characteristics as MLRM- SIMD architecture. Although such a design suits for multimedia processing, low data bandwidth caused by the shared data bus between multi-level registers severely impedes the programs mapping to MLRM-SIMD architecture. If this constraint can not be resolved well, the parallelism among multi-SIMD units would also be influenced as well as the whole program performance. Therefore, one of the major challenges to optimizing techniques for MLRM-SIMD architecture is to resolve the shared bus conflicts well. However, when generating the executable codes for MLRM-SIMD architecture, the compiler must simultaneously allocate many interdependent resources: the SIMD units on which the operations take place, the register files to hold the intermediate values and the shared bus to transfer the data for SIMD units. Bluetooth is a wireless communication technology that provides short-range, small-size, low-cost, and low-power connectivity among mobile devices. The MAC protocol for Bluetooth is based on a time division duplex (TDD) scheme, where the master determines channel access to all other slaves in the piconet. Hence, the polling scheme used by the master has a significant effect on the Bluetooth system performance. Accordingly, this paper proposes an enhanced limited round robin with a priority policy for Bluetooth. In simulations, the proposed scheduling algorithm demonstrates a better overall performance in a Bluetooth network.

We study the problem of executing a collection of independently designed and validated task systems upon a common platform comprised of a preemptive processor and additional shared resources. We present an abstract formulation of the problem and identify the major issues that must be addressed in order to solve this problem. We present (and prove the correctness of) algorithms that address these issues, and thereby obtain a design for an open real-time environment in the presence of shared global resources.

We consider the problem of broadcasting a live stream of data in an unstructured network. The broadcasting problem has been studied extensively for edge-capacitated networks. We give the first proof that whenever demand lambda + epsiv is feasible for epsiv > 0, a simple local-control algorithm is stable under demand lambda, and as a corollary a famous theorem of Edmonds. We then study the node-capacitated case and show a similar optimality result for the complete graph. We study through simulation the delay that users must wait in order to playback a video stream with a small number of skipped packets, and discuss the suitability of our algorithms for live video streaming.

The spread of broadband access to the Internet means that real-time applications have become commonplace. Video conferencing, communicating interactively in real time at multiple locations, is one such real-time application. For multipoint real-time communication, each member has to transmit information to all of the other members in the multicast delivery. However, there are some problems in real-time multicasting. Specifically, end-to-end delay and packet loss rate differ among multicast members. In this study, we aim to achieve fairness of time and quality among multicast members in multipoint realtime communication. In this paper, we assume that the multicast is of the application-level shared-tree type. To solve the problems mentioned above, we propose a new control mechanism in the root node of the shared tree. This mechanism consists of a proposed scheduling algorithm and a proposed discarding discipline. To make end-to-end delay among members uniform, the packet transfer order from the buffer is scheduled by considering the packet's generation time and the delay from the root node to the receiver. On the other hand, to make the packet loss rate among members uniform, the discard probability of packets that have arrived at the root node is decided by considering the packet loss rate in the network from the sender to the root node. Experimental performance evaluation demonstrates that our proposed system can achieve fairness in time and quality.

In this paper, we introduce a system level evaluation platform based on the Mobile WiMAX system profile defined by WiMAX Forum. In order to satisfy the large computational requirement of the wireless channel simulation, we propose a distributed implementation method which can effectively reduce the simulation time by parallel computation. Moreover, different interfaces are provided in our platform to enable flexibility and extensibility of embedding various algorithms. Simulation results illustrate that the distributed simulation method reduces the simulation time significantly and the performance of the WiMAX system is reasonable according to the theoretical values.
