The transmission of high quality video requires high bandwidth. Ensuring constantly high bandwidth in wireless environments is a challenging task given constraints in the current wireless network resources. Current mobile computers are equipped with multiples wireless interfaces that can be used to improve the video quality by aggregating the bandwidth of these interfaces. Such Bandwidth Aggregation (BAG) approach involves multiple paths in communication and gives rise to a number of issues related to the management of the Service Level Agreement (SLA) and packet reordering. To guarantee an efficient and fair management of SLA, this paper presents a bandwidth aggregation-aware QoS negotiation mechanism that enables users to dynamically negotiate their desired service levels and to reach them through the use of bandwidth aggregation. This operation is performed while ensuring a fair use of the network resources among all competing users. To cope with packet reordering, a new scheduling strategy is presented. The performance evaluation of the proposed bandwidth aggregation-aware QoS negotiation scheme and the proposed scheduling algorithm are conducted via simulations and the results are discussed.

This paper presents a Modified Smith Predictor (MSP) controller to design a novel Active Queue Management (AQM) scheme. The controller decouples the setpoint response from the load response and shows a stable response for a Transmission Control Protocol(TCP) flow dynamics, which is highly oscillatory or unstable under practical conditions. The proposed control scheme enables to track the desired buffer level successfully and reject any load disturbances such as unresponsive traffic flows efficiently. The controller parameters are estimated by the use of standard forms of closed loop system response. Network simulator (ns-2) based simulation results show improved performances of the proposed controller compared to that of some popular schemes like Random Early Detection(RED), Proportional and Integral(PI), Linear Quadratic Regulator(LQR) etc.

This paper proposes an ant colony algorithm for permutation flow shop scheduling problem. The objective considered is to minimize makespan. Two priority rules are developed as heuristic information based on Johnson's Rule and total processing times. A local search is used for improving the constructed solutions. The proposed ant colony algorithm is tested on the benchmark problem set of Taillard. The obtained results are compared with the previous implementations of ant colony optimization which are available in the literature. Computational results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than other algorithms when the number of machines is less than ten.

Future integration of multicast and unicast data on time-slotted radio channels will require efficient resource sharing mechanisms. These mechanisms need to be optimized to provide the best possible performance for the users. In this paper, we consider the case where members of a video streaming multicast group share the common resources with unicast users on a HSDPA-like TDM channel. We define performance metrics and derive a system model to study the user performance for various resource allocations under fairness constraints. Our results show that the performance gains of resource-optimal multicast could be substantial and should be exploited in practical scheduling schemes.

The design of switching architectures for today's telecommunication networks needs to consider the limits imposed by electronic technology; in particular, it must take into account power consumption and dissipation, as well as power supply and footprint requirements. Currently, optical technology is exploited mainly for transmission over optical links requiring large bandwidth-distance products; however, many researchers and switch architects believe that its introduction for switching functions can overcome most of the current design limits. Since many years, the research community has been studying not only solutions that make use of optics inside electronic switches but that also switching architectures that implement optical switching without any need of optoelectronic conversion. In this paper, we propose an optical switching architecture based on a WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) optical bus, aiming at interconnecting electronic line cards inside packet switches. In particular, the use of distributed packet scheduling techniques is addressed and its performance is discussed.

Behavioral modeling for codesign system is transformed into internal model known as control/data flow graph and produces a register-transfer-level (RTL) model of the hardware implementation for a given schedule. The internal model for codesign system is partitioned after scheduling and its communication cost is evaluated. The communication between components is through the buffered channels, the size of the buffer is estimated by its edge cut-set and system delay for different models are achieved to measure the quality of partitioning as opposed to general partitioning approaches that use number of nodes in each partition as constraint. In this paper scheduling and allocation algorithm (SAA) discusses helpful optimization method for resource-constrained and time constrained system in high level synthesis tool. The approach is based on data path for CDFG model that capture the design information from the source file specified by VHDL language from its equivalent separate Control flow graph and data flow graph. The proposed algorithm is also compared with other algorithm through estimation of schedules with a benchmark example. The buffer size is calculated with different objectives in partitioning and optimum partitioning is proposed

This paper presents an algorithm for RNA secondary structure prediction based on simulated annealing (SA) and also studies the effect of using different types of annealing schedules. SA is known to be effective in solving many different types of minimization problems and for being able to approximate global minima in the solution space. Based on free energy minimization techniques, this permutation-based SA algorithm heuristically searches for the structure with a free energy value close to the minimum free energy DeltaG for that strand, within given constraints. Other contributions of this paper include the use of permutation-based encoding for RNA secondary structure and the swap mutation operator. Also, a detailed study of the convergence behavior of the algorithm is conducted and various annealing schedules are investigated. An evaluation of the performance of the new algorithm in terms of prediction accuracy is made via comparison with the dynamic programming algorithm mfold for thirteen individual known structures from four RNA classes (5S rRNA, Group I intron 23 rRNA, Group I intron 16S rRNA and 16S rRNA). Although dynamic programming algorithms for RNA folding are guaranteed to give the mathematically optimal (minimum energy) structure, the fundamental problem of this approach seems to be that the thermodynamic model is only accurate within 5-10%. Therefore, it is difficult for a single sequence folding algorithm to resolve which of the plausible lowest-energy structure is correct. The new algorithm showed comparable results with mfold and demonstrated a slightly higher specificity

Dynamic Bandwidth allocation in Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs) has been an area of intense research in recent years. Most of the proposed solutions offer clever methods for fair grant sizing, traffic prediction, and prioritized, differentiated services. Barring some work by Kamal et al. and some elements in the scheme proposed by Ma et al., no work has been done on exploring the order of granting (i.e., ONU sequencing) in an EPON. In this paper, we propose an unexplored heuristic for improving the performance of the IPACT scheme with respect to the most important metric: packet delay. In this heuristic, the OLT always grants that ONU which has the Smallest (Available) Reported queue length, First (SARF). Our simulations indicate that our heuristic can improve the delay performance of IPACT by 10-20% (when tested under the gated allocation policy).

With the rise of many-core, parallelization is expected to be the mainstream to speedup the computation. This paper presents the study of classic vision based algorithms applied to vehicle recognition in DAS domain from the point of view of building a practicable real-time system. The workloads of the algorithm is illustrated and analyzed. After summarized the difficulties prevent current algorithm from achieving real-time, especially considering recent many-core tide, this paper brings out a parallel analysis pattern for vehicle recognition, our prime work indicates it can effectively help us to most exploit and express the parallelism of the algorithm.

HSDPA is a 3.5G wireless cellular system that can offer data rates of up to 14.4 Mbps which is much beyond what 2.5G and 3G cellular systems could offer. Due to its high supportable data rate, HSDPA can support a wide range of applications with diverse QoS. Data generated by these applications consists of different traffic classes; including conversational, streaming, interactive and background; each having certain QoS requirements. HSDPA scheduling schemes need to accommodate these traffic classes as well as provide certain QoS provisions for them. This paper proposes a delay-based scheduler (DBS) that prioritizes traffic based on its delay requirements. In addition, the DBS is designed to achieve a high throughput and a fair allocation of resources among users. Simulation results indicate that the DBS achieves a lower average queuing delay while maintaining other performance metrics when compared with existing HSDPA scheduling schemes.
