The increasing diversity of end-user devices and networks allow different users to receive and view images and video at different resolutions and rates. Scalable coding methods allow streaming media systems to easily adapt media by selecting packets according to schedules that reflect their importance. Traditional scheduling algorithms are based on a single distortion measure such as mean-squared error relative to the original high resolution image. In this paper, we present a new approach of using multiple distortion measures to schedule packets in a manner that explicitly accounts for a range of rates and resolutions. We show the effectiveness of this approach and examine a common scenario where multiple distortion measures are helpful. We present an algorithm that generates embedded JPEG2000 schedules and achieves 1 to 4 dB improvement over conventional approaches.

The latest tremendous growth of the Internet has opened up a vast market for high-speed broadband data services to the home. Broadband network services have created great opportunities for new multimedia applications at both home and businesses. Data over cable service interface specification (DOCSIS) is the leading standard for data over cable networks. DOCSIS is developed to support IP flows with significantly higher data rate links for high quality data, audio, video and interactive services. It is important to provide traffic scheduling mechanisms to support quality of service (QoS) for such applications. DOCSIS defines six upstream services for supporting per-flow QoS. Among them it uses rt-PS service for real-time VBR traffic which has burst nature. The headend provides periodic opportunities for unicast request, namely polling, which yields higher delay and not suitable for real-time services. In this paper, a novel scheduling mechanism and bandwidth allocation algorithm has been proposed to support VBR multimedia traffic over DOCSIS. The proposed dynamic unsolicited grant service (DUGS) scheduling algorithm makes use of piggybacking request and changes the unsolicited grant size allocation dynamically. It is shown through simulation results that throughput, channel utilization and delay performance have been improved in case of DUGS, compared with current DOCSIS protocol. This algorithm can also keep fairness among connections

In this paper we explore the possibility of using commodity graphics processing units (GPUs) to speedup standard schedulability analysis algorithms. Our long-term goal is to exploit GPUs to accelerate common electronic design automation algorithms, most of which tend to be computationally expensive. Our main contribution in this paper is a reformulation of a standard demand bound criteria-based schedulability analysis algorithm as a streaming algorithm expressed in terms of computer graphics primitives. This allows the algorithm to be efficiently implemented on a GPU, thereby resulting in very attractive speedups.

This paper presents an algorithm called CSP-IRPTW for the vehicles routing problem with time windows (VRPTW), which applies the PCP method (precedence constraint posting) used for models of scheduling as a CSP (constraint satisfaction problem). PCP involves the calculation of the shortest path in partial and global form, between pairs of nodes and among all the nodes respectively, in the graph that represents the VRPTW model. In order to apply PCP to VRPTW, the problem is treated as a CSP. The results show that the proposed search algorithm is efficient in the search for the global optimum for some problems.

In queue-based scheduling systems jobs are executed according to a predefined sequential plan. During execution, faults may occur that cause jobs to re-execute, thus delaying the whole schedule. It is thus important to determine (in real-time) whether the given set of pre-ordered jobs is fault-tolerant, that is, if all jobs will always meet their deadlines. This allows, for instance, to decide online whether to admit a new urgent job into the queue while still guaranteeing that the whole schedule remains fault-tolerant. Our goal in this work is to design efficient algorithm for testing fault tolerance of sequenced jobs in the presence of transient faults. We consider different fault models that specify which fault patterns are allowed to occur and how soon failed jobs can be restarted. For each fault model we provide efficient algorithms that determine the feasibility of all jobs in the schedule. Our algorithms are exact and run in time linear in the number of jobs (deterministically, or with very high probability, depending on the fault model), and thus can be used to make real-time decisions.

The self-similar model can reflect the Internet traffic property more precisely than Poisson model, the theoretical and simulation results of burst length distribution based on the time threshold assembly mechanism are shown in this paper. Moreover, the simulation result of OBS schedule algorithm under self-similar traffic model is reported. Both the analytic and simulation results show that burst length distribution is related to the length of assembly period; secondly, the assembly mechanism based on time period can reduce the self-similarity of traffic effectively; at last, the schedule algorithms in OBS have different performance based on the self-similar traffic.

The paper presents a two-stage scheduler for the optimal scheduling of distributed energy resources (DER) connected to a distribution network. The proposed approach integrates a centralized day-ahead scheduler with an intra-day one. On the one hand, the day-ahead scheduler calculates the active power set points during the following day taking into account both technical and economic objectives and constraints. On the other hand, the intra-day scheduler takes into account the results of the day-ahead one and updates every 15 minutes the DERs set points for the optimization of the network voltage profiles. The paper describes the implementation of the proposed two-stage scheduler algorithm into a computer code based on a JavaScript link between Matlab and EMTP-RV simulation environments and presents the results obtained for the case of a network configuration adapted from the IEEE 34-node test distribution feeder.

The IEEE 802.11e standard was proposed to provide QoS capabilities in wireless networks. For the centralized HCF channel access mode (HCCA), the standard proposes a simple reference scheduler which allocates time to stations based on mean data rates for flows. Due to its static mechanism of time allocation based on mean data rates, the scheduler is inefficient for variable bit-rate (VBR) traffic such as video-conferencing or VoIP traffic. The Flexible HCF (FHCF) scheme was proposed for handling VBR traffic by using better queue length estimation for flows. However, FHCF over estimates queue-lengths, allocates time inefficiently and it fails to provide QoS under high load. We propose a modified and highly optimized version of FHCF, the Optimized FHCF (OFHCF). OFHCF is a scheduling algorithm that is more efficient, economical, and provides QoS guarantees for all types of traffic even under heavy load. Simulation results are presented to compare FHCF and OFHCF.

Surgical services require the coordination of many activities, including patient check-in and surgical preparation, surgery, and recovery after surgery. Each of these activities requires the availability of resources including staff, operating rooms, and intake and recovery beds. Furthermore, each of these activities has substantial uncertainty in their duration. The combination of a complex resource constrained environment, and uncertainty in the duration of activities, creates challenging scheduling problems. In this study we report on a discrete event simulation model of an outpatient surgical suite, and investigate the impact of several sequencing and scheduling heuristics on competing performance criteria.
