We propose the cognitive-radio-based multi-channel medium access control (MAC) protocols, which integrate the spectrum sensing and packet scheduling, for the wireless ad hoc networks. Specifically, the cognitive MAC protocols allow secondary users to identify and use the unused frequency spectrum in a way that constrains the level of interference to the primary users. Under our proposed protocols, each secondary user is equipped with two transceivers. One of the transceivers operates on a dedicated control channel, while the other is used as a cognitive radio that can periodically sense and dynamically utilize the identified unused channels. To obtain the channel status accurately, we propose two types of collaboratively channel- sensing policies, namely random sensing policy and negotiation- based sensing policy, to help the MAC protocols detect the unused channels. We also develop the analytical models to study the proposed MAC protocols with the two types of channel-sensing policies.

This paper proposes a heuristic guided Lagrangian relaxation and augmented Lagrange Hopfield network (HLA) for unit commitment (UC) with ramp rate constraints. HLA is a combination of Lagrangian relaxation (LR) and augmented Lagrange Hopfield network (ALHN) guided by heuristic search based algorithms. The proposed HLA method solve UC problem in three stages. In the first stage, LR is use to solve unit scheduling satisfying load demand and spinning reserve constraints neglecting minimum up and down time constraints. In the second stage, heuristic search based algorithms are applied to refine the obtained unit schedule including primary unit de-commitment, unit substitution, minimum up and down time repairing, and de-commitment of excessive units. In the last stage, ALHN which is a continuous Hopfield network with its energy function based on augmented Lagrange relaxation is applied to solve constrained economic dispatch (ED) problem and a repairing strategy for ramp rate constraint violations is used if a feasible solution is not found. The proposed HLA is tested on systems ranging from 17 to 110 units and compared to other methods. Test results indicate that the total production costs obtained by HLA are much less than those of other methods in a fast manner. Therefore, HLA is favorable for large-scale UC implementation.

QoS routing in a wireless sensor network is difficult because the network topology may change constantly, and the available state information for routing is inherently imprecise. Ever more complex sensors have become available to create and maintain situational awareness during missions. Choosing the most suited sensor for the execution of a sensor function is based on sensor capabilities and function attributes. To increase performance of the entire sensor network, the total set of sensors should be scheduled in a single system. This paper puts forward for scheduling prioritised tasks in sensor networks. Use a reinforcement learning formalism to optimise the set of schedules. In this paper, node actively infer the state of other nodes, using a reinforcement learning based more particularly Q-learning, thereby achieving high throughput by improving the delay for a wide range of traffic conditions.

A new configuration scheduling algorithm in multicast configuration scheme is proposed and evaluated over reduction ratio of configuration data transfer cycles and power/energy overhead on a coarse-grained dynamically reconfigurable processor array (DRPA). As a case study, the proposed methods are applied to some real applications on a DRPA architecture MuCCRA-1. As a result, we confirmed that the proposed overwrite configuration technique for DRPAs reduced an application configuration cycles 66.5% at maximum compared to one without multicast and 20.2% compared to one without the overwrite configuration. It also decreased the configuration energy consumption 18.7% at maximum beyond the overhead of memory overwrites.

In this paper, we are concerned with energy efficient area monitoring using information coverage in wireless sensor networks, where collaboration among multiple sensors can enable accurate sensing of a point in a given area-to-monitor even if that point falls outside the physical coverage of all the sensors. We refer to any set of sensors that can collectively sense all points in the entire area-to-monitor as a full area information cover. We first propose a low-complexity heuristic algorithm to obtain full area information covers. Using these covers, we then obtain the optimum schedule for activating the sensing activity of various sensors that maximizes the sensing lifetime. The scheduling of sensor activity using the optimum schedules obtained using the proposed algorithm is shown to achieve significantly longer sensing lifetimes compared to those achieved using physical coverage. Relaxing the full area coverage requirement to a partial area coverage (e.g., 95% of area coverage as adequate instead of 100% area coverage) further enhances the lifetime.

This paper presents a run-time slack distribution strategy for precedence constrained task graphs mapped on to a voltage scalable multiprocessor platform. Online dynamic voltage scaling techniques use the slack formed due to early finish of tasks and lower the supply voltage suitably so that energy reduction is achieved while meeting the worst-case deadline of the task graph. Given a task graph mapping on a multiprocessor, the proposed offline analysis phase calculates expected slack and expected computation ahead of each task. The online voltage scheduler uses these values and the current slack to decide the voltage and frequency of execution of the next scheduled task in order to minimize expected energy dissipation. Results show improvement in average energy saving with this methodology over most of the presently known online techniques

Channel aware schedulers play a crucial role in the performance enhancement of wireless systems by taking advantage of channel fluctuations for leveraging the gain that results in user selections (multiuser diversity) to maximize the throughput performance. Opportunistic schedulers achieve a convenient trade-off between sum-rate and fairness by optimizing the resource allocation with respect to the channel performance over past assignments (e.g., channel quality measurements for the past users or the users' throughput). This paper is focused on opportunistic schedulers based on cumulative density function with the introduction of the predicted channel quality values. The Predictive Score Based Scheduler (Predictive-SBS) proposed in this paper is computationally convenient and shows a better trade-off between sum-rate and fairness when compared to non-predictive schedulers based on cumulative density function.

In order to provide service differentiation in 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks, the 802.11e working group has recently proposed the Hybrid Coordination Function (HCF) along with a HCF Controlled Channel Access (HCCA). However, the 802.11e proposal does not specify an effective bandwidth allocation algorithm. Recently, to overcome this limitation, a control theoretic framework has been proposed in literature. Within such a framework, this paper proposes a new allocation algorithm based on a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller. Moreover, a performance comparison among the Simple Scheduler introduced by 802.11e standard and three bandwidth allocations algorithms, designed using different dynamic regulators, has been carried out. Ns-2 simulation results showed that the best trade-off between packet delays and number of admitted flows is achieved by a properly tuned PID regulator.

A basic problem in wireless network optimization is the inapplicability of the layered structure. This paper examines a cross layer resource allocation algorithm for downlink OFDM system. The tradeoff of fairness and efficiency is well balanced with cross layer interaction by considering the traffic parameter and fairness among users in link layer as well as the influence of channel state and power transmission limitation. The experimental results reveal the guarantee on steadiness and fairness for users improves a lot while using the cross layer method with a little loss on power efficiency compared with pure physical adaptive counterpart.

We propose a rigorous mathematical interpretation of a novel family of active queue management schemes, called sending rate estimate based queue management (SREQM) scheme, that aims to provide fair bandwidth allocation to all the flows in a router by estimating the flow sending rates, while maintaining only minimal per-flow state information. We propose an optimized implementation of SREQM, called fair sending rate estimate based queue management (FSREQM) scheme, and show through comparative simulation that FRESQM is the only scheme among those tested that successfully prevents bandwidth abuse while maintaining high link utilization.
