In this paper, we focus on power optimization of real-time applications with conditional execution running on a dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) enabled multiprocessor system. The targeted system consists of heterogeneous processing elements with non-negligible inter-processor communication delay and energy. Given a conditional task graph (CTG), we have developed novel online and offline algorithms that perform simultaneous task mapping and ordering followed by task stretching. Both algorithms minimize the mathematical expectation of energy dissipation of non-deterministic applications by considering the probabilistic distribution of branch selection. Compared with existing CTG scheduling algorithms, our online and offline scheduling algorithms reduce energy by 28% and 39% in average, respectively.

In this paper, the immune algorithm (IA) is proposed to derive the rephasing strategy arrangement of laterals and distribution transformers to enhance three phase balancing of distribution systems. The multi-objective function is formulated by considering the unbalance of phasing currents, the customer service interruption cost and labor cost to perform the optimal rephasing strategy. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology to enhance three-phase balancing of distribution systems, a practical distribution feeder in Taipower with 523 customers is selected for computer simulation. By minimizing the objective function subjected to the operation constraints, the rephasing strategy has been derived by selecting the laterals and distribution transformers for phasing adjustment. The phase currents and neutral currents of test feeder before and after the execution of proposed rephasing strategy have been measured and collected by the SCADA system in Taipower. It is found that the neutral current of test feeder has been reduced to be less than the over neutral current limit by executing the rephasing of laterals and distribution transformers.

A Petri net with controller is used to model discrete events in flexible job shop scheduling with results obtained based on genetic algorithm and simulated annealing algorithm. In order to assure the stability of manufacture, and the job shop production ability can be maintained farthest, a new classified scheduling method is presented to the job shop scheduling problem (JSP) with dual-resource constraints and multiple disturbances. Firstly, classified based on machine repairing time, and worker leaving time, and task of order cancelling; and then deciding whether it is rescheduled based on remainder task after machine repairing and labor returning. When urgent order comes, remainder jobs and urgent jobs are disposed separately, and then making integration, and through finding optimal results of remainder jobs based on urgent jobs result is optimal, and the whole and local optimal results can be found through this method. scheduling examples show that the method is available and efficient.

Dynamic monitoring adaptation to system reconfigurations such as server scale-out is required especially for the virtual machine based flexible IT systems. For any states of the systems, the monitoring server must provide fresh information with a stabilized load. In this paper, we propose an adaptive monitoring method that generates the monitoring schedule for each state of the target systems. The schedule regulates the processes for updating information cache to keep the required freshness and to stabilize the monitoring load. Since the problem for schedule generation is classified in NP-hard, we propose an approximation algorithm. Results from experiments with system reconfigurations show that the adaptive monitoring method improves the variation coefficients of CPU usages and network traffics of monitoring server by at most 80%.

Simulations sometimes lead to observed sensitivity to configuration parameters as well as inconsistent performance results. The question is then what is the true effect and what is a coincidental artifact of the evaluation. The shaking methodology answers this by executing multiple simulations under small perturbations to the input workload, and calculating the average performance result; if the effect persists we can be more confident that it is real, whereas if it disappears it was an artifact. We present several examples where the sensitivity that appears in results based on a single evaluation is eliminated or considerably reduced by the shaking methodology. While our examples come from evaluations of scheduling algorithms for supercomputers, we believe the method has wider applicability.

Multi-access networks integrate a number of radio accesses (RAs) over which a data flow may be transmitted. Considering the possibility of multi-radio transmit diversity (MRTD), where a given flow may be assigned multiple RAs either in parallel or in a switched mode, we investigate mechanisms for joint RA selection and scheduling of data flows onto the selected RAs. We introduce the active set concept for multiaccess networks, consisting of a subset of the available RAs that are chosen by a user for potential handling of its data flow and establish the latitude for access selection. The performance impact of distinct access selection schemes is assessed in multiaccess networks, considering different scenarios in terms of the degree of non cositing, the traffic load and the number of available RAs. Among the key results, we demonstrate that a significant degree of non cositing is beneficial and that the use of MRTD is fruitful in pursuing performance targets of operational relevance.

The bandwidth of multiple physical communication links can be aggregated with inverse multiplexing to create a single, higher capacity logical communication link. However, achieving the maximum possible aggregated bandwidth becomes challenging as the communication characteristics of the underlying links (e.g., available bandwidth, packet loss rate) change with time. In this paper we introduce NATALIE, a Network-aware traffic equalizer. NATALIE combines an arbitrary set of network interfaces and schedules IP packet transmissions over those interfaces in a weighted round-robin fashion. To achieve the maximum possible throughput, NATALIE measures the communication characteristics of the underlying links and dynamically adjusts its scheduler to assign packets to each link in proportion to its available capacity. We describe NATALIE'S implementation, the test environment we built on the Emulab Network Testbed, and the results of experiments demonstrating NATALIE'S throughput performance for TCP connections over diverse underlying links with cross-traffic.

Current scientific workflow models require datasets to be transferred from their source to the hosts where they can be processed. This seriously impedes data-intensive applications. In order to address this limitation, we propose a notion of mobile tasks that can move from their home hosts towards datasets and perform computation on the dataset side. Since a mobile task might migrate across various administrative domains and get executed at multiple hosts, it is critically important to ensure the security of a mobile- task-based workflow system. In this paper, we propose an itinerary-based access control model to ensure the secure migration of mobile tasks.

In this paper, a novel block encryption cipher based on chaotic dynamical system is proposed. The algorithm operates on 64-bit plaintext blocks, and the key is 128 bits long. In round function, the logistic chaotic map and three algebraic group operations are mixed. As the algorithm is a Feistel network, it can be used for both encryption and decryption. Furthermore, the security of the algorithm is analyzed in details. The cryptanalyse results indicate that the algorithm has good diffusion and confusion properties, and it is very sensitive to the plaintexts and keys. Finally, by using differential cryptanalysis we found the upper bound of difference character capability for this cipher is 2 -6.6601 and 2 -17.1862 when block length is 16 and 32 bits long, respectively.

Xilinx Virtex-II / Virtex-II Pro FPGAs provide the possibility of partial and dynamic run-time reconfiguration. This feature can be used in adaptive systems providing the possibility to adapt to application requirements by exchanging parts of the hardware while other parts stay operative. This computing in time and space and many other fine grained adjustments within the architectures, opens new dimensions for electronic system design as well as for novel scheduling mechanisms based on well established graph-based algorithms in comparison to pure microprocessor based electronic systems. However, at the moment it is not possible to visualize the physical configuration of the chip and the manifold possibilities of manipulations on the device. This feature allows demonstrating the system's behavior and helps to debug final integrated reconfigurable systems. This paper presents an approach to the system integration of an autonomously working on-line visualization stand alone IP-Core integrated on Xilinx Virtex-II and Virtex-II Pro FPGAs
