To improve the performance of pipelined data processing on computational grids, the method combining simulated annealing with a set of heuristic algorithms is presented to optimize grid scheduling. Pipelined data processing is divided into multiple sub-applications, and every sub-application is supposed moldable. Thus, sub-applications should be assigned onto their appropriate grid nodes, while parallel degrees should be determined reasonably. On one grid node, sub-applications are supposed to spatially share processor resources, and a set of heuristic algorithms is presented to optimize parallel degrees for different performance parameters respectively, based on which simulated annealing is simplified for optimizing sub-application assignments. Experiments show that the throughput or latency of pipelined data processing can be efficiently improved by the optimization of grid scheduling

A growing trend has emerged in network architecture research to switch focus from Quality of Service (QoS) to Quality of Experience (QoE) optimization. In this paper, we first present QoE models that characterize user satisfaction of video, audio, and data services over wireless networks. We then develop a novel packet scheduling algorithm for multi-hop wireless networks that jointly optimizes the delivery of multiple video, audio, and data flows according to the QoE metrics. We formulate a multidimensional optimization problem that minimizes the overall distortion across all flows for the given network resources on wireless links. Fairness constraints over the flows are also considered as part of the optimization. Our experimental results, obtained with the NS-2 IEEE 802.16 MESH-mode simulator, show that distortion-aware scheduling can significantly increase the perceived quality of different wireless services under bandwidth constraints. Additionally, improved fairness across the competing flows is demonstrated relative to conventional scheduling techniques.

Design alternatives for supporting real-time traffic in a differentiated services IP network node are studied. A scheduling algorithm called weighted earliest due date (WEDD) is proposed that provides tunable delay differentiation for applications like video or voice over IP. WEDD enhances the earliest due date (EDD) scheduling mechanism in such a way that not only different delay bounds but also different deadline violation probabilities are provided. The ratios of violation probabilities in different classes are easily specified by a set of parameters. Simulation studies are performed to show that the scheduler is able to maintain the specified ratios under various traffic conditions in short as well as in long time scales.

The evolution of microprocessors has been hindered by their increasing power consumption and the heat generation speed on-die. High temperature impairs the processor's reliability and reduces its lifetime. While hardware level dynamic thermal management (DTM) techniques, such as voltage and frequency scaling, can effectively lower the chip temperature when it surpasses the thermal threshold, they inevitably come at the cost of performance degradation. We propose an OS level technique that performs thermal- aware job scheduling to reduce the number of thermal trespasses. Our scheduler reduces the amount of hardware DTMs and achieves higher performance while keeping the temperature low. Our methods leverage the natural discrepancies in thermal behavior among different workloads, and schedule them to keep the chip temperature below a given budget. We develop a heuristic algorithm based on the observation that there is a difference in the resulting temperature when a hot and a cool job are executed in a different order. To evaluate our scheduling algorithms, we developed a lightweight runtime temperature monitor to enable informed scheduling decisions. We have implemented our scheduling algorithm and the entire temperature monitoring framework in the Linux kernel. Our proposed scheduler can remove 10.5-73.6% of the hardware DTMs in various combinations of workloads in a medium thermal environment. As a result, the CPU throughput was improved by up to 7.6% (4.1% on average) even under a severe thermal environment.

This paper discusses the joint session scheduling (JOSCH) problem for multimedia services in heterogeneous wireless networks. The adaptive JOSCH based on layer-encoded streaming is designed for real-time multimedia service simultaneously transmitted by several heterogeneous radio access technologies (RATs). Considering the layered characteristics of the layer-encoded streaming, an adaptive JOSCH mechanism, along with the supporting network architecture, is designed to make efficient usage of the heterogeneous wireless resources and adapt to the dynamic network changes. Simulation results show that the adaptive JOSCH is effective in guaranteeing the QoS of multimedia and maintaining a high transmitting adaptability in multi-RATs environment.

In this paper, we develop an opportunistic spectrum scheduling scheme for cognitive radio networks. In the proposed scheme, the channel status (i.e., whether being occupied by primary users) and the instantaneous channel quality (SNR at the secondary receiver) are assumed to vary fast within a frame which consists of a fixed number of slots. At each scheduling epoch, each secondary user will observe the channel conditions, namely the channel status and the channel quality. Based on the queue size and the observed channel conditions, each secondary user will estimate the throughput for each channel over the frame to be scheduled. A scheduling algorithm is performed to maximize the expected aggregate throughput of all the secondary users. The performances of the proposed scheduling scheme in terms of throughput and percentage of packet drop are evaluated.

The demand for capacity in WiFi networks is driving a new look at transmission scheduling-based link layers. One basic issue here is the use of accurate interference models to drive transmission scheduling algorithms. However, experimental work in this space has been limited. In this work, we use commodity WiFi hardware (specifically, 802.11a) for a comprehensive study of interference modeling for transmission scheduling on a mesh network setup. We focus on the well-known physical interference model for its realism. We propose use of the "graded" version of the model where feasibility of a link is probabilistic, as opposed to using the more traditional "thresholded" version, where feasibility is binary. We show experimentally that the graded model is significantly more accurate (80 percentile error 0.2 vs. 0.55 for thresholded model). We develop transmission scheduling experiments using greedy scheduling algorithms for the evacuation model for both interference models. We also develop similar experiments for optimal scheduling performance for the simplified one-shot scheduling. The scheduling experiments demonstrate clearly superior performance for the graded model, often by a factor of 2. We conclude by promoting use of this model for scheduling studies.

Today there is a significant body of results of resource management in real-time systems. However, most of them are based on "open-loop" strategies and techniques that do not take into account application demands to dynamically adjust their behavior. To overcome this problem by focusing on control applications, we show a novel scheduling technique: large error first (LEF). This scheduling algorithm uses feedback information from each controlled plant by the application in order to assign computing resources to control tasks. The LEF is used in simulation. By comparing the performance of LEF versus classical open-loop scheduling techniques, encouraging simulation results have been obtained. There are still many issues to be addressed with regard to LEF algorithm. This paper also shows these issues, with possible approaches that should be investigated further

Many innovative schemes for allocating jobs to parallel computing systems have been proposed in order to achieve highly utilized parallel computing systems. The schemes have tried to achieve good job response times with little system fragmentation of processing resources. Since most schemes have concentrated on approaches for processor allocation, the schemes have used First-Come-First-Serve (FCFS) as the job scheduling discipline. However, it has been previously established that job scheduling algorithms for parallel computing systems can have a large impact on the system utilization and job response time. Schemes that use multiple queues, which reorder the sequence of jobs allocated to the parallel system, can be very effective in improving the system performance. However, such non-FCFS schemes have been criticized because they provide improved average performance by favoring small jobs at the expense of large jobs. In order to achieve improved performance by means of multiple queue job scheduling schemes without sacrificing the fairness of FCFS, we propose a new job scheduling discipline that behaves in a FCFS manner under low loaded conditions, but exploits performance enhancing features of multiple queue schemes under highly loaded conditions. In addition, the scheme does not inappropriately discriminate against large jobs.

Grid simulation tools provide frameworks for simulating application scheduling in various grid infrastructures. However, while experimenting with many existing tools, we have encountered two main shortcomings: (i) there are no tools for generating workloads, resources and events ; (ii) it is difficult and time consuming to model different grid levels, i.e. resource brokers, and local level scheduling systems. In this paper we present the grid scheduling simulator (GSSIM), a framework that addresses these shortcomings and provides an easy-to-use Grid scheduling framework for enabling simulations of a wide range of scheduling algorithms in multi-level, heterogeneous grid infrastructures. In order to foster more collaboration in the community at large, GSSIM is complemented with a portal (http://***) that provides a repository of grid scheduling algorithms, synthetic workloads and benchmarks for use with GSSIM.
