The design of mixed analog-digital systems requires new CAD tools, as specific performance requirements need to be tackled i.e. simultaneous switching noise (SSN). This paper proposes a novel technique for resource binding and operation scheduling. The goal is to maximize the latency of the digital hardware such that its SSN is kept within feasible limits. The technique includes two steps: (1) for each input specifications, Performance Models (PM) are automatically generated for the overall throughput and SSN values, and (2) PMs are employed by an exploration algorithm to find the best resource binding and operation scheduling alternative. Experiments showed the ability of the proposed technique to find good solutions as compared to traditional high-level synthesis methods.

In ubiquitous services, concurrent requests from various services for limited service resources such as network bandwidth, easily lead to a problem of resource insufficiency. The resource scheduling for ubiquitous services is the key to improve the tradeoff between request admittance, resource utilization and service quality. In this paper, a GA-based approach to resource scheduling to enable a flexible quality management of ubiquitous services is proposed to solve the problem mentioned above. First, the relationships between service of quality and resource requirements are explored. There are four different types of relations including (1) linear with saturation (LWS), (2) linear with dead zone and saturation (LWDS), (3) shifted step (SS), and (4) exponential (EX). Based on the derivation of the resource-quality model with the four relations, we define the maximum and minimum of resource requirement and regard the scope as the negotiation criterion for quality guarantee in genetic algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed approach definitely benefits quality guarantee of service and the increasing of service request admittance ratio.

In this paper, we present a cross-layer scheduling and dynamic resource allocation (CLSDRA) strategy for downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with limited feedback. Based on the instantaneous partial channel state information (CSI) from physical (PHY) layer and the queue state information (QSI) from media access control (MAC) layer, the proposed scheme schedules packets and allocates resources such as channel, bit and power to the scheduled users to maximize the utility function which sums the product of each scheduled user's delay requirement, head of line (HOL) packet waiting time, queue length and data rate. Simulation results demonstrate that our scheme outperforms the existing single-layer resource allocation or scheduling algorithms in balancing the total system throughput and the packet drop rate because the proposed strategy could utilize the QSI and the partial CSI simultaneously.

scheduling is one of the core steps to efficiently exploit the capabilities of heterogeneous distributed computing systems and it is also an appealing NP-complete problem. There is a number of heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms that were tailored to deal with scheduling of independent jobs. In this paper we investigate the efficiency of differential evolution on the scheduling problem.

Reconfigurable hardware provides multiple functions without greatly increasing the die size of SoCs. Field programmable gate array (FPGA), one type of reconfigurable hardware, is developing rapidly to handle high speed and complex applications. In particular, SRAM-based FPGA can be reconfigured during run-time to provide functionality as needed, thus reducing cost and power consumption. However, the reconfiguration delay time and limited resource on FPGA pose new challenges to many real-time scheduling applications. In order to optimize hardware usage and eliminate the impacts of reconfiguration delay, the scheduling algorithms and resource management mechanisms for reconfigurable SoC have to be re-designed. In this paper, we develop a template-based approach to reuse hardware resources without compromising the reconfiguration and performance constraint. The developed solution makes use of offline generated templates to generate near-optimal schedules during run-time.

While multimedia synchronization in wired environments has been well studied in the past, very little studies have been done for wireless networks. In this paper, we study the multimedia synchronization problem for wireless and mobile networks. We present a performance evaluation of MoSych algorithm and investigate the effect of four media packet scheduling algorithms on MoSych (first in first out, highest priority first, weighted fair Queuing and round robin). We also report the results we have obtained to analyze the effect of these four packet scheduling algorithms in terms of mobile client's buffer usage and delay between multiple data streams.

This paper addresses the problem of real-time video streaming over a bandwidth and energy constrained wireless sensor network (WSN). Considering the compressed video bit stream is extremely sensitive to transmission errors, and the constraints in bandwidth and energy in WSNs and delay in video delivery, we exploit the construction of an application-specific number of multiple disjoint paths to enlarge the aggregate bandwidth and facilitate load balancing and fast packet delivery. For efficient multi-path routing of real-time video frames, we propose a path priority scheduling algorithm to satisfy the delay constraint of video frames while balancing energy and bandwidth usage among all the available paths. In the case that the aggregate bandwidth is still not enough to satisfy the required coding rate, we further exploit a cross-layer technique for adaptive coding according to path status. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is evaluated and demonstrated by simulations.

Complex applications can often be viewed as a collection of coarse-grained data-parallel application components with precedence constraints. It has been shown that combining task and data parallelism (mixed parallelism) can be an effective execution paradigm for these applications. In this paper, we present an algorithm to compute the appropriate mix of task and data parallelism based on the scalability characteristics of the tasks as well as the intertask data communication costs, such that the parallel completion time (makespan) is minimized. The algorithm iteratively reduces the makespan by increasing the degree of data parallelism of tasks on the critical path that have good scalability and a low degree of potential task parallelism. Data communication costs along the critical path are minimized by exploiting parallel transfer mechanisms and use of a locality conscious backfill scheduler. Evaluation using benchmark task graphs derived from real applications as well as synthetic graphs shows that our algorithm consistently performs better than previous scheduling schemes

This paper presents remote periodic messages and function blocks (FBs) scheduling in a single segment Foundation fieldbus (FF) system. First, we regard remote periodic messages and FBs as tasks, and then propose a compact mode and only consider precedence constraints to build the model of tasks, in which each job is completed as earlier as possible. Next, considering the communication block, a scheduling algorithm based on job slack time monotonic and compact mode for all remote periodic messages and FBs is presented in order to meet their precedence constraints and time constraints. Finally, an example of application shows the process of scheduling of remote periodic messages and FBs.

Presents a scheduling approach, based on genetic algorithms (GA), developed to address the scheduling problem in manufacturing systems constrained by both machines and workers. The GA algorithm utilizes a new chromosome representation, which takes into account machine and worker assignments to jobs. A study was conducted, using the proposed scheduling method to compare the performance of six dispatching rules with respect to eight performance measures for two different shop characteristics: i) dual-resources (machines and workers) constrained shop, and ii) single-resource constrained shop (machines only). An example is used for illustration. The results indicate that the dispatching rule which works best for a single-resource constrained shop is not necessarily the best rule for a dual-resources constrained system. Furthermore, it is shown that the most suitable dispatching rule depends on the selected performance criteria and the characteristics of the manufacturing system.
