Addresses a hybrid scheduling methodology for flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) that uses Petri nets (PNs) as a modeling tool and several successfully employed scheduling methods: conflict-solving based on heuristic dispatching algorithms, artificial intelligence (AI) heuristic search, problem decomposition and evolutionary approximation algorithms as search tools. PNs have been traditionally employed in scheduling approaches based on discrete event simulation and more recently, the combination of PNs and AI heuristic search has produced interesting results. PNs also allow easy structural analysis towards a decomposition of the problem. In this paper PNs are employed as a representation paradigm and a decomposition-construction scheduling method is based on them. A PN-based AI systematic heuristic search is used to solve sub-problems which are progressively joined by an evolutionary building procedure. Experimental results based on a preliminary implementation of the method are presented.

The interruptable multi-batching-server system (IMBSS) is abstracted from several complicated scheduling problems in different research areas, and the most important characteristic of IMBSS is that a server can be interrupted by accepting new service requests and/or releasing finished service requests. The IMBSS is modelled by object-oriented Petri-nets. Based on this model, elevator group control problem is taken as a typical case to show how to schedule the IMBSS. Simulation results show that the modelling method is feasible to schedule the IMB-SS, and the proposed scheduling algorithm behaves better performance in optimizing multiple objectives.

Most existing real-time protocols for sensor data dissemination use packet scheduling schemes to prioritize packets according to their deadlines. However, packet prioritization by itself cannot completely support real-time data dissemination requirements. In this paper, we propose new just-in-time scheduling (JiTS) algorithms that take advantage of the available slack, if any, to reduce contentions and improve real-time performance by judiciously delaying packets as long as their deadlines are not missed. Specifically, we explore several policies for allocating the slack among multiple hops, including a non-linear policy where packets are non-uniformly delayed at intermediate nodes to account for expected higher contentions as packets get closer to the sink(s). Notably, our JiTS policies require neither lower layer support nor synchronization among sensor nodes making for an easy deployment. In our simulation study, JiTS significantly improves the deadline miss ratio and packet drop ratio compared to existing approaches in various situations. It is also shown that the geographic forwarding often used for real-time data dissemination substantially underperforms the shortest path routing especially when the load is high

MEMS-based storage is expected to be adopted as a secondary storage of mobile computing devices such as portable media players and digital cameras. Due to its desirable features such as small size, lightweight, low power consumption, and low cost, MEMS-based storage will be widely used for mobile applications that require large volume of multimedia data. However, physical structures of MEMS-based storage are different from other storage devices such as hard disk especially in the way of data placement and head positioning. Hence, it is important to revise OS-level software management schemes for MEMS-based storage. In this paper, we present a new I/O scheduling algorithm for MEMS-based storage called G-MST that exploits two-dimensional structure of MEMS-based storage. The new algorithm aims at reducing total seek distance in the two dimensional MEMS structure and at the same time providing fast and uniform response times. Through simulation experiments, we show that the new I/O scheduling algorithm performs better than existing algorithms in terms of average response time and the variation of response times.

The capacity of GERAN is expected to be limited by interference, particularly in urban areas, and by the quality of service (QoS) requirements demanded by the users. Smart antenna arrays employing beamforming techniques, commonly known as adaptive antennas (AA), are an efficient technology in mitigating interference in urban areas with low azimuth spread. In EGPRS, the packet data service of GERAN, resource scheduling is responsible for multiplexing users on shared physical channels in order to best fulfill QoS requirements. By using more efficient scheduling algorithms, the resulting QoS is enhanced and, ultimately, it may be exchanged for capacity. In this work, the QoS and capacity gains provided by an AA system and two scheduling algorithms in several EGPRS system configurations are shown. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that, when combined, a tighter reuse scheme, a base station AA system, and an enhanced scheduling algorithm can result in a capacity gain of up to approximately 450% over the reference scenario.

This paper proposes a scheduling algorithm which considers imprecise system characteristics and constraints. We create a model to model the imprecise latency characteristic as well as imprecise register usage based on fuzzy sets. Given a set of functional units, the proposed algorithm attempts to create a schedule which minimizes the latency and register usage, maximizing overall satisfiability. The experiments show that we can achieve an acceptable schedule with up to 30% saving of number of registers compared to the original algorithm.

This paper presents a system proposal for the downlink of cellular communication network which is based on the MIMO-OFDM transmission technique. The core idea is the combination of a self-organized beamforming approach with opportunistic scheduling algorithms. In the considered system, different beams are formed and grouped together. The space-time-frequency resources are then allocated to MTs by intelligent scheduling methods such that mobile terminals are assigned resources when a high instantaneous SINR is observed. Beside a fixed beamforming technique, an adaptive use of beams is also pursued. The performance of the system proposal is quantitatively assessed in terms of system throughput.

Efficient partitioning and scheduling of parallel programs and the distribution of data among pmessing elements are very important issues in parallel and distributed systems. Existing tools fdl short in addressing the issues satisfactorily. On one hand, it is believed to k unreasonable to leave the burden of these complex tasks to the programmers. On the other hand, fully automated schedulers have ken shown to be d little practical significance, or suitable only for restricted cases. In this paper we address the issues and algorithms for efficient partitioning and scheduling d parallel programs, including the distribution of data, in dislributed-memory multiprocessor systems, using the PARSA parallel software development environment. PARSA consists of a set of visual, interactive, compiletime tools that will provide automated program partitions and schedules whenever possible, while permitting the user to exert conml over these operations for a htter performance. The support program assessment tool provides the users the opportunity b fine-tune the program and achieve their performance objectives.

An efficient scheduling architecture, named multi-class uplink fair scheduling structure (MUFSS), to support bandwidth and delay quality of service guarantees for IEEE 802.16 networks. Various types of traffic are supported: constant bit rate, variable bit rate (real time and non-real-time) and best effort.
