A schur complement method for Optimum Experimental Design in the Presence of Process Noise

Optimization problems arising in Optimum Experimental Design (OED) applications require repeated covariance matrix evaluations of the underlying Parameter Estimation (PE) problems. The complexity of this task grows quickly with the problem dimensions, especially when process noise is considered. In this paper, a schur complement method is proposed to alleviate this problem by translating the covariance matrix evaluation into the solution of a sparse linear system and the inversion of a small-scale matrix. The method is used as a building block for the open-source software package casiopeia, a powerful and easy-to-use environment for OED and PE. The performance of the software and the proposed schur complement method is assessed on a numerical example. © 2017

Elliptic PDEs with variable coefficients in a domain with complex geometry occur in many ocean models. The parallelization of the elliptic solver by the Shur complement method is presented for the ice-ocean model PROS. The schur complement method is usually employed as an iterative solver, but for this special class of elliptic problems the direct approach with an explicitly inverted schur complement matrix proves to be very well suited. Reduced order modeling for a schur complement method for fluid-structure interaction

We present a non-iterative schur complement method for the solution of a fluid-structure interaction problem, employing projection-based reduced order models (ROMs) on one or both subdomains. The formulation is strongly coupled, using a Lagrange multiplier to represent the interfacial stress, and solving a schur complement equation allows for the independent solution of the subdomain equations at each time step. The inclusion of ROMs in this scheme provides a more robust framework and makes the technique more computationally appealing. Utilizing the supremizer enrichment technique, we offer detailed investigations into the performance of this method with respect to the use of supremizers and with respect to the basis sizes of the reduced order variables. Results indicate that the ROM-ROM coupled formulation yields results that agree well with the full order solution in a shorter computational time and with a large reduction in the size of the algebraic system.

The schur complement method is applied to a multiregion integral equation formulation for analyzing antennas near anatomical human models to improve the conditioning of the system. The multiregion problem is split into a primary (external) domain and a secondary (internal) domain. The antenna unknowns are transferred as an effective load to the equivalent surface unknowns via the schur complement. The proposed method's implementation and costs are detailed.

This paper introduces the application of asynchronous iterations theory within the framework of the primal schur domain decomposition method. A suitable relaxation scheme is designed, whose asynchronous convergence is established under classical spectral radius conditions. For the usual case where local schur complement matrices are not constructed, suitable splittings based only on explicitly generated matrices are provided. Numerical experiments are conducted on a supercomputer for both Poisson's and linear elasticity problems. The asynchronous schur solver outperformed the classical conjugate-gradient-based one in case of computing node failures.

Coupled heat and moisture transport in highly perforated bricks is indispensable part of design of energy efficient buildings. Geometry of the perforated bricks is very complicated which results in large number of nodes and elements in numerical analysis. Moreover, material model of the coupled heat and moisture transport leads after discretization to nonsymmetric systems of algebraic equations which need large computer memory. In order to reduce the computational time or to solve problems with many degrees of freedom, parallel computers are employed. Parallelization is based on the schur complement method which is able to deal with nonsymmetric systems. Example of the coupled heat and moisture transport in a perforated brick of HELUZ company is showed. Real climatic boundary conditions for two different locations are used. We present a non-iterative solver based on the schur complement method for sparse linear systems of special form which appear in Quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simulations of strongly interacting fermions on the lattice. While the number of floating-point operations for this solver scales as the cube of the number of lattice sites, for practically relevant lattice sizes it is still significantly faster than iterative solvers such as the Conjugate Gradient method in the regime of strong inter-fermion interactions, for example, in the vicinity of quantum phase transitions. The speed-up is even more dramatic for the solution of multiple linear systems with different right-hand sides. We present benchmark results for QMC simulations of the tight-binding models on the hexagonal graphene lattice with on-site (Hubbard) and non-local (Coulomb) interactions, and demonstrate the potential for further speed-up using GPU. In this paper we present a preconditioned multi-domain algorithm applied to the elliptic kernels arising from the spectral collocation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in three space dimensions with one homogeneous direction. The technique, based on the iterative solution of the schur complement matrix, allows for efficient numerical solution of the operators in complex geometries consisting of a collection of non-overlapping rectangular subdomains. The method is shown to be nearly optimal in terms of condition number behavior in a double path of refinement strategy, i.e. whenever both the number of Legendre modes and the number of subdomains are significantly increased. It is thus well suited for engineering applications in the fields of direct numerical simulation and large eddy simulation of turbulence. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Explicit time integration of eddy current problems using a selective matrix update strategy

Purpose - Discretizing the magnetic vector potential formulation of eddy current problems in space results in an infinitely stiff differential algebraic equation system that is integrated in time using implicit time integration methods. Applying a generalized schur complement to the differential algebraic equation system yields an ordinary differential equation (ODE) system. This ODE system can be integrated in time using explicit time integration schemes by which the solution of high-dimensional nonlinear algebraic systems of equations is avoided. The purpose of this paper is to further investigate the explicit time integration of eddy current problems. Design/methodology/approach - The resulting magnetoquasistatic schur complement ODE system is integrated in time using the explicit Euler method taking into account the Courant-Friedrich-Levy (CFL) stability criterion. The maximum stable CFL time step can be rather small for magnetoquasistatic field problems owing to its proportionality to the smallest edge length in the mesh. Ferromagnetic materials require updating the reluctivity matrix in nonlinear material in every time step. Because of the small time-step size, it is proposed to only selectively update the reluctivity matrix, keeping it constant for as many time steps as possible. Findings - Numerical simulations of the TEAM 10 benchmark problem show that the proposed selective update strategy decreases computation time while maintaining good accuracy for different dynamics of the source current excitation. Originality/value - The explicit time integration of the schur complement vector potential formulation of the eddy current problem is accelerated by updating the reluctivity matrix selectively. A strategy for this is proposed and investigated.

A scalable parallel Poisson solver for three-dimensional problems with one periodic direction

A code for the direct numerical Simulation (DNS) of incompressible flows with one periodic direction has been developed. It provides a fairly good performance on both Beowulf Clusters and supercomputers. Since the code is fully explicit, from a parallel point-of-view, the main bottleneck is the Poisson equation. To solve it, a Fourier diagonalization is applied in the periodic direction to decompose the original 3D system into a set Of Mutually independent 2D systems. Then, different strategies can be used to solved them. In the previous version of the code, that was conceived for low-cost PC clusters with poor network performance, a Direct schur-complement Decomposition (DSD) algorithm was used to solve them. Such a method, that is very efficient for PC clusters, cannot be used with an arbitrarily large number of processors and mesh sizes, mainly due to the RAM memory requirements. To do so, a new version of the solver is presented in this paper. It is based on the DSD algorithm that is used as a preconditioner for a Conjugate Gradient method. Numerical experiments showing the scalability and the flexibility of the method on both the MareNostrum supercomputer and a PC Cluster with a conventional 100 Mbits/s network are presented and discussed. Finally, illustrative DNS results of an air-filled differentially heated cavity at Ra = 10(11) are also presented. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
