A screen content coding (SCC) standard based on high efficiency video coding (HEVC) was finalized by joint collaborative team on video coding (JCT-VC). The coding efficiency of the standard has been improved by adopting new technologies, such as intra block copy, palette mode, and adaptive motion vector resolution. However, the encoding time is significantly increased. Also, a transform skip mode is selected more frequently because traditional transform techniques for video compression cannot efficiently compress screen content videos. Therefore, we propose an early determination method for transform process in the HEVC-SCC. Residual variance is employed as a measure of complexity. Using statistics of residual variance and an online learning system, we can adaptively determine a threshold to detect the transform skip mode. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm successfully reduces encoding time with a small coding efficiency loss.

With the emerging applications, such as screen mirroring, and remote play, screen contents coding (SCC) plays important role in video coding recently. Since the characteristics of screen contents are different from nature contents, palette coding is adopted in the current draft standard of HEVC-SCC. The basic idea of the palette coding is to represent the colors of a coding unit (CU) by the indices of selected representative colors. This paper presents that the produced index maps exhibit considerably high spatial correlation. To utilize the spatial correlation among indices, a general 2-D search method is proposed firstly for index map compression. To reduce the memory access and implementation complexity, three simplified search schemes are proposed to balance the coding performance and complexity. The experimental results show that the three simplified methods can achieve 0.6 %, 0.5 % and 0.9 % BD-rate saving respectively, as compared to HM-13.0 + RExt-6.0 test model.

High Efficiency Video coding - screen content coding (HEVC-SCC) follows the traditional angular intra prediction technique in HEVC. However, the Planar mode and the DC mode are somewhat repetitive for screen content video with features such as no senor noise. Hence, this paper proposes a new intra prediction mode called linear regression (LR) mode, which combines the Planar mode and the DC mode into one mode. The LR mode improves the prediction accuracy of intra prediction for fading regions in screen content video. Besides, by optimizing the most probable mode (MPM) construction, the hit rate of the best mode in the MPM list is improved. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve 0.57% BD-BR reduction compared with HM 16.20+SCM8.8, while the coding time remains largely the same.

coding of screen content video is becoming important because of applications such as wireless displays, remote desktop, remote gaming, automotive infotainment, cloud computing, distance education etc. Video in these applications often has mixed content consisting of natural video, text and graphics in the same picture. Intra block copy (IntraBC) is a new coding tool being studied for the HEVC Range Extensions (RExt) standard. IntraBC is a block matching technique where in a coding Unit (CU) is predicted as a displacement from already reconstructed block of samples from neighboring region in the same picture. IntraBC is very effective for screen content video since it removes redundancy from repeating patterns which typically occur in text and graphics regions. IntraBC provides a significant bit rate savings (up to 44%) for screen content sequences but at the cost of encoding time increase because of the search involved in Intra block matching. This paper presents fast encoding techniques for early skipping of IntraBC search which result in about 21% - 24% encoding time reduction for Intra coding.

High Efficiency Video coding - screen content coding (HEVC-SCC) is an extension to HEVC which adds sophisticated compression methods for computer generated content. A video frame is usually split into blocks that are predicted and subtracted from the original, which leaves a residual. These blocks are transformed by integer discrete sine transform (IntDST) or integer discrete cosine transform (IntDCT), quantized, and entropy coded into a bitstream. In contrast to camera captured content, screen content contains a lot of similar and repeated blocks. The HEVC-SCC tools utilize these similarities in various ways. After these tools are executed, the remaining signals are handled by IntDST/IntDCT which is designed to code camera-captured content. Fortunately, in sparse coding, the dictionary learning process which uses these residuals adapts much better and the outcome is significantly sparser than for camera captured content. This paper proposes a sparse coding scheme which takes advantage of the similar and repeated intra prediction residuals and targets low to mid frequency/energy blocks with a low sparsity setup. We also applied an approach which splits the common test conditions (CTC) sequences into categories for training and testing purposes. It is integrated as an alternate transform where the selection between traditional transform and our proposed method is based on a rate-distortion optimization (RDO) decision. It is integrated in HEVC-SCC test model (HM) HM-16.18+SCM-8.7. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a Bjontegaard rate difference (BD-rate) of up to 4.6% in an extreme computationally demanding setup for the "all intra" configuration compared with HM-16.18+SCM-8.7.

This paper presents PSNR-based comparison tests of the objective compression performance of the High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) standard, its format range extensions (RExt), and its draft screen content coding extensions (SCC). The current dominant standard, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, is used as an anchor reference in the comparison. The conditions used for the comparison tests were designed to reflect relevant application scenarios and to enable a fair comparison to the maximum extent feasible - i.e., using comparable quantization settings, reference frame buffering, intra refresh periods, rate-distortion optimization decision processing, etc. It is noted that such PSNR-based objective comparisons generally provide more conservative estimates of HEVC benefit than are found in subjective studies. The experimental results show that, when compared with H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, HEVC version 1 provides bit rate reductions for equal PSNR of about 23% for all-intra coding, 34% for random access coding, and 38% for low-delay coding. This is consistent with prior studies indicating that HEVC can provide a bit rate reduction of about 50% for equal subjective quality for most applications. The HEVC format range extensions provide similar bit rate reductions of about 13-25% for all-intra coding, 28-33% for random access coding, and 32-38% for low-delay coding at different bit rate ranges. For lossy coding of screen content, the HEVC screen content coding extensions achieve bit rate reductions of about 66%, 63%, and 61% for all-intra coding, random access coding, and low-delay coding, respectively (86%, 84%, and 78% for RGB text and graphics with motion). For lossless coding, the corresponding bit rate reductions are about 40%, 33%, and 32%, respectively.

This paper presents an advanced screen content coding solution using color table and index map method. It is implemented on top of the High-Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) Range Extension (RExt) standard draft version 5 [1], fully harmonized with the HEVC recursive quad-tree structure and also one of the promising tool under investigation for emerging HEVC based screen content coding extension. For each coding unit, a number of major colors will be selected to form the color table, then the original pixel block is translated to the corresponding index map accordingly. A 1-D string match scheme is introduced for lossless index map coding. Experiments show the significant coding efficiency improvement of proposed solution for typical screen contents, resulting in up to 49%, 46%, 45% bit rate reduction at lossless case and averaged 11.4%, 8.3%, 6.7% BD-Rate reduction at lossy scenario for respective All Intra (AI), Random Access (RA), and Low-delay using B picture (LB) structures.

In recent years, screen content video is becoming increasingly popular in several major video applications, such as video recording and video conferencing. Due to the unique features of screen content videos that are not captured by camera sensors but produced artificially, dedicated coding tools have been developed for achieving significant compression efficiency gain. In recognition of the popularity of screen content applications, an open video dataset for screen content is proposed in this paper for the development of screen content coding technologies. The proposed video dataset consists of 12 typical screen content type video clips that are publicly available. In addition, to better understand the characteristics of the proposed video dataset, several major screen content coding tools in AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) have been evaluated on this dataset and analyzed in this paper.

Intra Block Copy (IBC) mode in a screen content coding (SCC) extension in High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) provides high coding gain by performing motion estimation (ME) and motion compensation (MC) to find the repetitive patterns within the same frame. Merge mode and Advanced Motion Vector Prediction (AMVP), which are originally used for inter mode, are also applied to the IBC mode. However, there are redundant coding bits when they are applied to IBC. Therefore, we propose decoder-side merge mode and AMVP for IBC in SCC so as to remove the redundancy. Experimental shows that the proposed method can achieve up to 0.25% Bjontegaard delta bitrate (BD-rate) reduction compared to the conventional SCC with negligible impact to encoding and decoding complexity.

This paper reports on verification testing of the coding performance of the screen content coding (SCC) extensions of the High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) standard (Rec. ITU-T H.265 vertical bar ISO/IEC 23008-2 MPEG-H Part 2). The coding performance of HEVC screen content model (SCM) reference software is compared with that of the HEVC test model (HM) without the SCC extensions, as well as with the Advanced Video coding (AVC) joint model (JM) reference software, for both lossy and mathematically lossless compression using All-Intra (AI), Random Access (RA), and Low-delay B (LB) encoding structures and using similar encoding techniques. Video test sequences in 1920x1080 RGB 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:4:4, and YCbCr 4:2:0 colour sampling formats with 8 bits per sample are tested in two categories: "text and graphics with motion" (TGM) and "mixed" content. For lossless coding, the encodings are evaluated in terms of relative bit-rate savings. For lossy compression, subjective testing was conducted at 4 quality levels for each coding case, and the test results are presented through mean opinion score (MOS) curves. The relative coding performance is also evaluated in terms of Bjontegaard-delta (BD) bit-rate savings for equal PSNR quality. The perceptual tests and objective metric measurements show a very substantial benefit in coding efficiency for the SCC extensions, and provided consistent results with a high degree of confidence. For TGM video, the estimated bit-rate savings ranged from 60-90% relative to the JM and 40-80% relative to the HM, depending on the AI/RA/LB configuration category and colour sampling format.
