OpenSeesPy: Python library for the OpenSees finite element framework

OpenSees, an open source finite element software framework, has been used broadly in the earthquake engineering community for simulating the seismic response of structural and geotechnical systems. The framework allows users to perform finite element analysis with a scripting language and for developers to create both serial and parallel finite element computer applications as interpreters. For the last 15 years, Tcl has been the primary scripting language to which the model building and analysis modules of OpenSees are linked. To provide users with different scripting language options, particularly Python, the OpenSees interpreter interface was refactored to provide multi-interpreter capabilities. This refactoring, resulting in the creation of OpenSeesPy as a Python module, is accomplished through an abstract interface for interpreter calls with concrete implementations for different scripting languages. Through this approach, users are able to develop applications that utilize the unique features of several scripting languages while taking advantage of advanced finite element analysis models and algorithms. The same flexibility that makes dynamic scripting languages appealing to programmers is also the primary cause of their low performance. To access objects of potentially different types, the compiler creates a dispatcher with a series of if statements, each performing a comparison to a type and a jump to a handler. This induces major overhead in instructions executed and branches mispredicted. This paper proposes architectural support to significantly improve the efficiency of accesses to objects. The idea is to modify the instruction that calls the dispatcher so that, under most conditions, it skips most of the branches and instructions needed to reach the correct handler, and sometimes even the execution of the handler itself. Our novel architecture, called ShortCut, performs two levels of optimization. Its Plain design transforms the call to the dispatcher into a call to the correct handler - bypassing the whole dispatcher execution. Its Aggressive design transforms the call to the dispatcher into a simple load or store - bypassing the execution of both dispatcher and handler. We implement the ShortCut software in the state-of-the-art Google V8 JIT compiler, and the ShortCut hardware in a simulator. We evaluate ShortCut with the Octane and SunSpider JavaScript application suites. Plain ShortCut reduces the average execution time of the applications by 30% running under the baseline compiler, and by 11% running under the maximum level of compiler optimization. Aggressive ShortCut performs only slightly better.

We have working in very simple applications in which is necessary to repeat few calculations million of times. Specifically, we have studing the generation of random bits using chaotic maps. In our working days we detected the high increase in execution time when this application is coded in a scripting language such as Python, Mathlab, or Octave. This work is an attempt to analyse this behavior of a computational intensive application. Our obtained results show that performing this application in a scripting language such as Python, Matlab, or Octave, leads to execution times 45, 163, and 832 times higher that the execution time of the same program but compiled in C language. In this manner we measure of execution times and memory page faults, and give an analysis of them. We can conclude that in general it is not recommended to use an interpreted language for computational intensive applications.

However, writing a scripting language requires a variety of knowledge on TV shows such as speech timing, camera angle, lighting and so on. In this paper, we propose TV show template that contains animation settings imitating a particular type of TV show and semi-automatic animation generation using it.

Recently, domain-specific language has become more popular in the IT market. Therefore, there are several variants of the domain-oriented programming languages used in the modern world. A variant of domain-specific language that accepts wind farm modeling language at the input and GPSS code at the output to model the queuing system has been proposed in this paper. Conventionally, the modules of SCADA system such as Message broker, Human Machine Interface (HMI) Building Environment, Database Manager and drivers including the SCADA HMI are developed in compiler-based languages such as C/C++. Thus, the person who develops the SCADA HMI has to be well versed with that language whose learning curve is steep. Every time the user has to rely on the SCADA engineer to develop the SCADA HMI for them. Customization of SCADA HMI is a difficult task, as all the classes and the pointers in the language has to be managed by the SCADA Engineer, thus, increasing the time to market. scripting Engine module with combination of Qt technology is introduced in this study, which enables the SCADA Engineer to develop SCADA HMI using easy to use scripting language, balancing the time required for development as well as meeting the performance standards. As scripting languages are believed to be easily adoptable by the non-programmer, the person with the non-programming background can easily setup the SCADA screens. The comparative analysis of the scripting Engine approach and conventional approach is also presented in this study.

A Script-Based Prototyping Framework to Boost Agile-UX Developments

Prototypes are described as a successful mechanism to incorporate user-experience design （UX） into Agile de- velopments, but their integration into such developments is not exempt from difficulties. Prototypes and final applications are often developed using different tools, which hinders the collaboration between designers and developers and also compli- cates reuse. Moreover, integrating stakeholders such as clients and users into the Agile process of designing, evaluating, and refining a prototype is not straightforward mainly because of its iterative nature. In an attempt to tackle these problems, this work presents the design and implementation of a new framework in which scripting languages are used to code prototyped behaviors. Prototyping is then treated as a separate aspect that coexists and runs together with final functionality. Using this framework communication is enhanced because designers and developers work in parallel on the same software artifact. Prototypes are fully reused and iteratively added with final functionality while prototyped behaviors are removed. They can be also modified on the fly to implement participatory design techniques.

Recently, the productivity of embedded systems applied to Cyber physical systems has become problematic due to their increasing complexity and scale. To improve the productivity, the mruby on TOPPERS embedded component system (TECS) framework, which employs scripting language (i.e., a lightweight Ruby) and supports component-based development, has been proposed. This paper proposes an extended framework of mruby on TECS that improves development efficiency more than the current version. In the proposed framework, a Bluetooth loader that receives an mruby bytecode, and a RiteVM scheduler that simplifies multitasking are implemented.

A scripting language for state configured layered control of a long range autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is introduced. The XML-based language has been designed to meet the complex requirements for long-term autonomous operation. It does not require that mission planners be programmers, yet allows them to have a high degree of certainty at deployment that the robot will do what they want it to do. The script is simple to execute on the vehicle, both to minimize CPU power usage and to minimize the chance of failure due to complexity. Users do not need a high-fidelity model of the AUV to plan a mission, as the robot may change in unexpected ways over the course of the mission. Those who wish to do more advanced programming of mission commands and behaviors can do so in the script and are not able to crash the vehicle's operating system. To address these needs, the "Tethys script" state-configured layered control language has been developed.
