A three-step displacement measurement method for a 3-DOF macro-micro positioning stage

A high-performance displacement measurement method for the displacement measurement of a three degree of freedom (3-DOF) macro-micro positioning stage based on the micro-vision measurement system is proposed. The method is built up by three steps. In the first step, a fast search algorithm combined with triangular relations and a ring projection with illumination and noise correction is adopted to achieve the selection of candidate pixels. Subsequently, an orientation code based algorithm is adopted to determine the integer-pixel displacement and rotation angle estimation. The third step is to obtain the sub-pixel displacement through a similarity function based algorithm. Simulations are carried out, and the results show that the proposed method has the characteristics of translation and rotation invariance, and the matching accuracy can reach 0.01-pixel theoretically. Moreover, the proposed method consumes less time than that of the orientation code and pseudo-Zernike moment based algorithm. Finally, a capacitance sensor measurement system is established to compare the accuracy of the proposed method. The experiment results demonstrate that it has a high accuracy. Modeling a Driver's Directional and Longitudinal Speed Control Based on Racing Track Features

This study firstly analyses the driver's manipulation behaviour and relates the different components of the driver model. 'Ihen, a model controlling the driver directions is built according to the prediction-follower theory with the aim of improving the point search algorithm. A model of the driving system of an electric vehicle is used to establish the longitudinal speed control model of the driver by using a feedforward-PID feedback control strategy. Our approach is to release the coupling between direction and speed control and build an integrated model that includes the direction and speed for an arbitrary path. Finally, the characteristics of an actual racing track are considered to establish the fastest driver control model. We simulated the typical operating conditions of our driver operation model. The simulation confirmed the effectiveness of the improved predictive point search algorithm and the integrated driver model to control the direction and speed for an arbitrary path.

DAG scheduling is a process that plans and supervises the execution of interdependent tasks on heterogeneous computing resources. Efficient task scheduling is one of the important factors to improve the performance of heterogeneous computing systems. In this paper, an investigation on implementing Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) algorithm for scheduling dependent jobs on heterogeneous computing and grid environments is carried out. Hybrid Two PHase VNS (HTPHVNS) DAG scheduling algorithm has been proposed. The performance of the VNS and HTPHVNS algorithm has been evaluated with Genetic algorithm and Heterogeneous Earliest Finish Time algorithm. Simulation results show that VNS and HTPHVNS algorithm generally perform better than other meta-heuristics methods.

Local Search for MinimumWeight Dominating Set with Two-Level Configuration Checking and Frequency Based Scoring Function

The Minimum Weight Dominating Set (MWDS) problem is an important generalization of the Minimum Dominating Set (MDS) problem with extensive applications. This paper proposes a new local search algorithm for the MWDS problem, which is based on two new ideas. The first idea is a heuristic called two-level configuration checking (CC2), which is a new variant of a recent powerful configuration checking strategy (CC) for effectively avoiding the recent search paths. The second idea is a novel scoring function based on the frequency of being uncovered of vertices. Our algorithm is called CC2 FS, according to the names of the two ideas. The experimental results show that, CC2 FS performs much better than some state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of solution quality on a broad range of MWDS benchmarks.

Study on separation abilities of moisture separators based on droplet collision models

Moisture separators are widely used for eliminating the droplets from the gas-water/steam mixture flows. The volume fraction of droplets is often not small in most separators, so the collision behavior of droplets is crucial in changing their velocity, size and number distributions to affect the separation abilities of these separators. In this paper, the collision models of droplets are established to simulate the droplet-laden flows in the moisture separators. First, a stochastic searching algorithm to find the collision droplet pairs is performed by utilizing the collision kernels and defining the mean free path of a droplet. Second, the criteria to distinguish the different regimes of binary droplet collision are carried out. The regime map drawn by these criteria is highly consistent with that from previous experiments. Third, a set of formulas to predict the velocity, size and number distributions of droplets after bouncing, coalescence, reflexive and stretching separation are proposed based on the conservation law and some empirical relations. Finally, the separation abilities of the cyclone and swirl-vane separators are investigated by simulating the droplet-laden flows coupled with the droplet collision models. As for the cyclone, the simulation separation efficiencies are in good agreement with the experimental data. It is further shown that the separation efficiency curve begins to climb up very quickly in the region with small droplet diameters, and then keep constant as the droplet diameter increasing. As for the swirl-vane separators, the simulated separation efficiencies are little larger than those of the experiment within 5% difference, which is mainly due to the fact that coalescence dominates the collision behaviors from the simulation results. The theoretical and simulation results show that these collision models present a new view to study the flowing behaviors of the droplets in the moisture separators.

Wind Farm Layout Design Using Cuckoo Search algorithms

Wind energy has emerged as a strong alternative to fossil fuels for power generation. To generate this energy, wind turbines are placed in a wind farm. The extraction of maximum energy from these wind farms requires optimal placement of wind turbines. Due to complex nature of micrositing of wind turbines, the wind farm layout design problem is considered a complex optimization problem. In the recent past, various techniques and algorithms have been developed for optimization of energy output from wind farms. The present study proposes an optimization approach based on the cuckoo search (CS) algorithm, which is relatively a recent technique. A variant of CS is also proposed that incorporates a heuristic-based seed solution for better performance. The proposed CS algorithms are compared with genetic and particle swarm optimization algorithms which have been extensively applied to wind farm layout design. Empirical results indicate that the proposed CS algorithms outperformed the genetic and particle swarm optimization algorithms for the given test scenarios in terms of yearly power output and efficiency.

Name Resolution Based on Set of Attribute-Value Pairs of Real-World Information

It is expected that a large number of different objects, such as sensor devices and consumer electronics, will be connected to future networks. For such networks, we propose a name resolution method for directly specifying a condition on a set of attribute-value pairs of real world information without needing prior knowledge of the uniquely assigned name of a target object, e.g., a URL. For name resolution, we need an algorithm to find the target object(s) satisfying a query condition on multiple attributes. To address the problem that multi-attribute searching algorithms may not work well when the number of attributes (i.e., dimensions) d increases, which is related to the curse of dimensionality, we also propose a probabilistic searching algorithm to reduce searching time at the expense of a small probability of false positives. With this algorithm, we choose permutation pattern(s) of d attributes to use the first K (K << d) ones to search objects so that they contain relevant attributes with a high probability. We argue that our algorithm can identify the target objects at a false positive rate less than 10(-6) and a few percentages of tree-searching cost compared with a naive d-dimensional searching under a certain condition.

Improved Harmony Search algorithm for Truck Scheduling Problem in Multiple-Door Cross-Docking Systems

The key of realizing the cross docking is to design the joint of inbound trucks and outbound trucks, so a proper sequence of trucks will make the cross-docking system much more efficient and need less makespan. A cross-docking system is proposed with multiple receiving and shipping dock doors. The objective is to find the best door assignments and the sequences of trucks in the principle of products distribution to minimize the total makespan of cross docking. To solve the problem that is regarded as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model, three metaheuristics, namely, harmony search (HS), improved harmony search (IHS), and genetic algorithm (GA), are proposed. Furthermore, the fixed parameters are optimized by Taguchi experiments to improve the accuracy of solutions further. Finally, several numerical examples are put forward to evaluate the performances of proposed algorithms.

Electric vehicles have a disadvantage in that the cruising distance per charge is short. This paper proposes a range extension control system based on a searching algorithm of front and rear driving force distribution with total efficiency optimization. The proposed method maximizes the total efficiency considering the slip ratio and the losses in the motors and inverters. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by experiments using a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. The mileage per charge can be extended by 18% by using the proposed method in a constant-speed test.

Optimum Design of Braced Steel Space Frames including Soil-Structure Interaction via Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization and Harmony Search algorithms

Optimum design of braced steel space frames including soil-structure interaction is studied by using harmony search (HS) and teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithms. A three-parameter elastic foundation model is used to incorporate the soil-structure interaction effect. A 10-storey braced steel space frame example taken from literature is investigated according to four different bracing types for the cases with/without soil-structure interaction. X, V, Z, and eccentric V-shaped bracing types are considered in the study. Optimum solutions of examples are carried out by a computer program coded in MATLAB interacting with SAP2000-OAPI for two-way data exchange the stress constraints according to AISC-ASD (American Institute of Steel Construction-Allowable Stress Design), maximum lateral displacement constraints, interstorey drift constraints, and beam-to-column connection constraints are taken into consideration in the optimum design process. The parameters of the foundation model are calculated depending on soil surface displacements by using an iterative approach. The results obtained in the study show that bracing types and soil-structure interaction play very important roles in the optimum design of steel space frames. Finally, the techniques used in the optimum design seem to be quite suitable for practical applications.
