In this work, we consider the use of buffer-aided relays, linear precoding techniques and multiple antennas for physical-layer security in wireless networks. We develop relay selection algorithms to improve the secrecy-rate performance of cooperative multi-user multiple-antenna wireless networks. In particular, we propose a novel finite buffer-aided relay selection algorithm that employs the maximum likelihood (ML) criterion to select sets of relays which fully exploit the flexibility offered by relay nodes equipped with buffers. Numerical results show the benefits of the proposed techniques as compared to prior art.

This paper shows improvement of stability and efficiency for mobility using locomotion selection strategy. First strategy is the selection of a gait relying on locomotion rewards. The locomotion reward has been proposed as an indicator for selection algorithm based on Falling Risk and the moving speed. This strategy has achieved a capability of large changes of uncertainties, such as a steep slope. Second strategy is adjustment of moving speed by the extended locomotion reward that explicitly shows the relationship between the moving speed and Falling Risk. The robot aims at the maximum moving speed without a falling, and removes small changes of uncertainties as a result. We performed an experiment in order to confirm effects of two strategies in an environment that includes a rough terrain as a small uncertainty and two steps as a large uncertainty. The robot improved the moving speed about 37.5% from the case of only using the gait selection strategy.

In this paper, we investigate an opportunistic relay and jammer scheme along with relay selection algorithms based on the secrecy rate criterion in multiple-input multiple-output buffer-aided down link relay networks, which consist of one source, a number of relay nodes, legitimate users and eavesdroppers, with the constraints of physical layer security. The opportunistic relay and jammer scheme is employed to improve the transmission rate and different relay selection policies are performed to achieve better secrecy rate with the consideration of eavesdroppers. Among all the investigated relay selection policies, a relay selection policy which is developed to maximize the secrecy rate based on exhaustive searches outperforms other relay selection policies in terms of secrecy rate. Based on the secrecy rate criterion, we develop a relay selection algorithm without knowledge of the channels of the eavesdroppers. We also devise a greedy search algorithm based on the secrecy rate criterion to reduce the computational complexity of the exhaustive search technique. Simulations show the superiority of the secrecy rate criterion over competing approaches.

Model updating methods for structural systems have been introduced in various numerical processes. To improve the updating method, the process must require an accurate analyses and minimized experimental uncertainties. In previous study, an identification method has been introduced and verified by measured experiment data of perturbed plate models. Iterated improved reduced system has been employed to the identification and updating method. Perturbed locations and thicknesses were identified accurately through the introduced identification method. To improve the updating method, in this study, we have devised methods to identify more diverse models. In order to detect minute changes in more various models, tetrahedral elements and neural network based updating methods were employed. The previous shell element models were able to identify the thicknesses with relatively thin slenderness. However, the tetrahedral elements can identify the physical properties of the complex models. The accuracy of the updating method for the numerical element models with neural networks was verified through the experimental examples.

There has been a renewed focus in exploration of the lunar surface and maximizing scientific potential of such missions is made possible in part by minimizing the time required to set up operations;that is, reducing transit time on the surface by increasing the landing precision with respect to the intended target. Established Safe and Precise Landing-Integrated Capability Evolution (SPLICE) project precision landing requirements necessitate a navigation filter architecture and underlying models developed specifically with these needs in mind. To date, test flights to characterize SPLICE guidance and navigation (GN) system performance have not provided a means to divert from the a priori selected landing site (LS) due to hazardous conditions. With the inclusion of a new sensor, the hazard detection lidar (HDL), coupled with safe landing site selection algorithms, GN can divert from the originally planned trajectory and navigate relative to the new targeted landing site. This work presents a novel hazard relative measurement model and covariance transformation methodology that enable the navigation system to inform a safe-site relative guidance profile to meet project precision landing goals.

Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) yields a linear, approximate model of a system's dynamics that is built from data. We seek to reduce the order of this model by identifying a reduced set of modes that best fit the output. We adopt a model selection algorithm from statistics and machine learning known as Least Angle Regression (LARS). We modify LARS to be complex-valued and utilize LARS to select DMD modes. We refer to the resulting algorithm as Least Angle Regression for Dynamic Mode Decomposition (LARS4DMD). Sparsity-Promoting Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMDSP), a popular mode-selection algorithm, serves as a benchmark for comparison. Numerical results from a Poiseuille flow test problem show that LARS4DMD yields reduced-order models that have comparable performance to DMDSP. LARS4DMD has the added benefit that the regularization weighting parameter required for DMDSP is not needed.

As the diversity of big data applications increases, their requirements diverge and often conflict with one other. Managing this diversity in any supercomputer or data center is a major challenge for system designers. Data replication is a popular approach to meet several of these requirements, such as low latency, read availability, durability, etc. This approach can be enhanced using new modern heterogeneous hardware and software techniques such as data compression. However, both these enhancements work in isolation to the detriment of both. In this work, we present HReplica: a dynamic data replication engine which harmoniously leverages data compression and hierarchical storage to increase the effectiveness of data replication. We have developed a novel dynamic selection algorithm that facilitates the optimal matching of replication schemes, compression libraries, and tiered storage. Our evaluation shows that HReplica can improve scientific and cloud application performance by 5.2x when compared to other state-of-the-art replication schemes.

The One Class Auto Associative Neural Network (AANN) has been investigated for solving various problems. Nonetheless, it is sensitive to the presence of outliers in the training set, which is known problem for one-class classifiers. For this, attempts have been done via proposing the use of efficient kernel and ensemble method to reduce the effect of outliers for one class support vector machine classifier. However, for the AANN, even with ensemble method, the effect of outliers is still maintained. Thus, we propose in this paper the joint use of ensemble method with a selection algorithm to select the appropriate training samples for the AANN, which leads to better reduction of the outliers' effect and therefore improving the AANN ensemble and classification robustness. Experimental results conducted on several real-world datasets prove the effective use of the proposed approach.

Adding vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication into the adaptive cruise control (ACC) system produces the cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) with a reinforced road safety. However, current policy obliges safety-related data to be exchanged solely over the control channel (CCH) within the Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC) spectrum, which may induce intolerable communication delay and higher accident risks. Standard countermeasures concentrate principally on adaptively adjusting transmission parameters. However, due to the limited network capacity of a single channel, these methods can hardly meet the real-time packet delivery requirement when vehicle density becomes high. Therefore, to ensure timely delivery of critical safety messages, this paper proposes instead a dynamic channel selection algorithm to fully exploit all the seven useable channels in the DSRC band. Experiments on a two-scaled-car platoon demonstrate the effectiveness of the method in reducing the vehicle CACC position and speed tracking errors.

A key input to any thermal infrared signature model is the environment, more specifically the model inputs specific to the thermal infrared background model. This paper describes a new method of analysing the climatic data for input to ShipIR. Historical hourly data from a stationary marine buoy are used to select a small number of data points (N=100) to adequately cover the range of statistics (CDF, PDF) displayed by the original data set (S=46,072). The method uses a coarse bin (1/3) to subdivide the variable space (3(5)=243 bins), and a single-point ranking system to select individual points so that uniform coverage (1/N = 0.01) is obtained for each variable. The selected data points are used in Vaitekunas and Kim (2013) to demonstrate how the new methodology is used to provide a more rigorous and comprehensive analysis of platform IR susceptibility based on the statistics of IR detection.
