harmonic contents in the output voltage of the multilevel inverter (MLI) affects the performance of different appliances and decreases the reliability of the system. selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation (SHEPWM) technique based Bio-inspired intelligent algorithms (BIAs) are found superior to eliminate the undesired lower-order harmonics and lower switching losses. To control the fundamental at the desired level and eliminate the undesired harmonics, mainly two approaches are utilized i.e. fixed input DC sources and optimal input DC sources. In this paper, a detailed comparative analysis is performed among the aforementioned techniques for harmonic elimination. The 5-level inverter is considered and PSO algorithm is applied for the calculation of optimized switching angles for both cases. The Simulation results show that in optimal input DC sources, the fundamental voltage is accurately regulated for each modulation index with an increased number of elimination of lower-order harmonics over a wide range of modulation indexes and achieved lower THD in comparison to fixed input DC sources.

Power quality improvement for microgrid-connected PV-based converters under partial shading conditions using mixed optimisation algorithms

This paper outlines a method to reduce harmonic injection for PV-based distributed generation units using search-based optimisation techniques. The motivation to design such a scheme is due to the difficulty of keeping the DC bus and output voltage constant under partial shading conditions (PSCs) with a single boost converter. Novel series compensation supported by the auxiliary unit has been introduced to highlight new aspects in this area. selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation (SHEPWM) is used to selectively choose the order of harmonics to be removed and keep a check on the other harmonics within specified ranges. The metaheuristic technique fetches five optimised switching angles for driving inverters, and an auxiliary inverter is used to mitigate lower and higher order harmonics as well as regulate the wide voltage variation on the grid side using novel series compensation. These angles were preserved in processor memory for an online application using the 'piecewise mixed model of approximation'. The THD obtained was 1.48%. The proposed method has been modelled in MATLAB/Simulink and verified experimentally in a practical PV system. The cuckoo search and proposed IPSO have outperformed in terms of MPP tracking under PSC and harmonic reduction, respectively. The proposed scheme was simple yet efficient in terms of power quality, easier computation, and faster tracking of maximum power point (MPP).

A versatile hybrid pulse width modulation (HPWM) scheme, which can combine individual characteristics of diverse PWM techniques and provide variable frequency of output voltage, is proposed for three-level neutral point clamped (3L-NPC) inverter based on change in pattern signal. In the presented HPWM, various switching patterns of selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation (SHEPWM) are applied to adapt to each changed pattern, which varies according to the changed frequency. Moreover, one fast and smooth transition strategy is also investigated between these SHEPWM switching patterns, considering the aspects of reliability, efficiency and safety of the switched system. Finally the simulation results acquired through MATLAB/SIMULINK platform are used to validate and evaluate the feasibility and performance of the whole control system.

In high-power applications, bulky and expensive filtering elements or systems are commonly used, since the commutation of high-voltage and high-current rated semiconductors will impact the thermal losses of power systems, which will further lead to distorted output waveforms. In the meantime, due to the non-uniform regulations in the area of power quality and more new and strict grid codes, the harmonic control of power converters' output signal is becoming greatly important. By taking this situation into account, comparisons between selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation (SHEPWM) and selective harmonic mitigation pulse width modulation (SHMPWM) techniques are proposed in this paper, based on the requirements of two well-known grid codes EN 50160 and CIGRE WG 36-05. In the presented simulation model, a switching frequency that is equal to 750 Hz is considered, and the harmonics up to the 49th are considered and the total harmonic distortion (THD) obtained considering up to the 40th and 50th. The obtained results show that, under the same switching frequency condition, only the SHMPWM technique can satisfy the requirements of the above-mentioned two grid codes, compared with the SHEPWM technique. This fact implies that the SHMPWM technique is more suitable for high-power applications, especially for reducing or removing the additional filtering elements or systems.

Observing present scarcity of fossil fuel and emissions of greenhouse gases, electricity generated from Renewable Energy (RE) sources turns out to be the best alternative for generating the power. In RE system, the inverter is normally used to condition the DC power into AC to meet the requirements of load and transmission system. The inverter offers myriad benefits;however, the presence of harmonics (particularly low-order) in the output voltage affects the efficiency and performance of inverter, causes switching losses and decreases the lifetime of the system. In last three decades, significant research has been done to develop the efficient control technique for eliminating the unwanted harmonics. The preliminary review of existing control techniques revealed that the selective harmonic elimination pulse-width modulation (SHEPWM) is more proficient to eliminate the low-order harmonics. However, non-linear transcendental equations used in this technique pose a challenge to solve particularly for calculus-based methods. With the advent of powerful and low-cost computers, bio-inspired intelligent algorithms (BIAs) seem to be a better approach for solving these complex equations. This review paper presents the detailed principle operation of nine well-known BIAs and discusses their application in inverters for harmonic elimination (HE). Moreover, different objective functions are also discussed in this paper which is used by the researchers for HE. Additionally, the performance of five renowned BIAs, namely, Imperialist Competitive Algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization, Differential Evolution, Bee Algorithm and Genetic Algorithm is critically evaluated. Their performance is analyzed in terms of accuracy, computational complexity, convergence speed, and a number of control parameters. This study presents a new energy efficient V/f speed control of single-phase induction motor. The method is implemented with a single-phase inverter in which extreme learning machine technique is used to achieve selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation. The objective is to adjust the speed of the single-phase induction motor while eliminating undesired low-order harmonics. Algorithm is developed using MATLAB/Simulink high-speed adaptation was obtained even at low- and high-speed regions. The results showed the effectiveness of the proposed method. The reduction in the total harmonic distortion is achieved in all operation range of V/f speed control.

The three-level NPC converter is an effective solution to medium-voltage and high-power electronic converters. modulation strategy is one of research focus of the three-level NPC converter. There are many modulation strategies of the three-level NPC converter, among them, selective harmonic elimination PWM (SHEPWM) and selective harmonic mitigation PWM (SHMPWM) strategies are very useful technologies since they have the characteristics of low harmonics elimination or reduction. Nevertheless, the SHEPWM and the SHMPWM strategies have the disadvantages in solving non-linear transcendental equations. Here, non-linear transcendental equations solution of the SHEPWM and SHMPWM strategies are researched and compared. First, the homotopy algorithm is applied to the SHEPWM strategy. In the solution process, the initial value is obtained by the gravity centre coincidence method, and the numerical solution obtained by the homotopy algorithm is solved by the Newton iteration method to obtain the true solution. Second, the non-linear transcendental equations of the SHMPWM technique are established and optimised. Finally, simulation models of the three-level NPC converter using SPWM, SHEPWM, and SHMPWM strategies are built in MATLAB. The comparison and analysis of the three strategies are carried out to verify the effectiveness and superiority of SHEPWM and SHMPWM algorithms in harmonic suppression.

Neutral-point potential balancing control strategy of three-level active NPC inverter based on SHEPWM

This study proposes a novel control strategy for a three-level active neutral-point clamped (3L-ANPC) inverter using selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation (SHEPWM). The proposed control strategy can effectively control the neutral-point potential (NP) balancing and eliminate the selective harmonics simultaneously. The three-phase SHEPWM line-to-line voltages of the inverter are considered as switching-states. Among these switching states, the six pairs of redundant switching-states generate the same line-to-line voltages and thus the same harmonic spectrums with each pair having opposite effects on NP balancing. As a result, the pair of switching-states can be swapped to control the NP while still maintaining the same inverter output. The decision to make such swap will take into account directions of output currents, polarities of NP offsets and exclusion of directly switching between P and N states. The simulation and experimental results on a Matlab/Simulink model and prototype of a three-phase 3L-ANPC inverter are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

This paper presents the hardware implementation of single-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) having selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulated (SHEPWM) switching strategy for producing lower distortion in its output voltage. The metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) is used for framing full-bridge VSI. The switching instants for generating SHEPWM signals of the inverter to eliminate lower order harmonics are determined by using particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique in MATLAB 2014b software under various modulation indices. The embedded PIC 16F676 microcontroller is used to generate the aforementioned pulse width modulation signals from the computed switching angles. The isolation and driving circuits of the inverter are also framed on the same printed circuit board (PCB). This embedded system can be used either in single-phase uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system in home or for integrating of solar energy conversion system at home or single phase vehicle to grid (V2G) applications or in single phase micro-grid system etc.
