Critical Success Factors for Data Governance: A Theory Building Approach

The objective of this research study is to present the critical success factors (CSFs) for data governance (DG). This paper reports on a single case study where data are gathered through semi-structured interviews following the CSF approach and analyzed by applying open, axial, and selective coding techniques. The findings are presented as seven CSFs, which are ranked in order of importance. Furthermore, we highlight the need to better understand the relationships (interconnectedness) between the CSFs.

Previous research has not focused sufficiently on the activities that are required to introduce an effective data governance programme. This is coupled with the fact that the strategic importance of data governance is growing. As result, this research study aims to identify the critical success factors (CSF) for data governance and the associated recommended actions that would enable organisations to introduce an effective data governance programme. This paper reports on a single case study in a large telecommunications service provider in Saudi Arabia. The data are (1) gathered through semi-structured interviews that follow the CSF approach and (2) analysed by applying open, axial, and selective coding techniques. The findings of this research are presented as nine CSFs, which are ranked in order of importance, and include actions recommended for each CSF. Based on our case analysis, having 'business-driven data integration strategies' was the most important factor for data governance.

To function as a mechanism in premating isolation, the divergent and species-specific calling songs of acoustic insects must be reliably processed by the afferent auditory pathway of receivers. Here, we analysed the responses of interneurons in a katydid species that uses long-lasting acoustic trills and compared these with previously reported data for homologous interneurons of a sympatric species that uses short chirps as acoustic signals. Some interneurons of the trilling species respond exclusively to the heterospecific chirp due to selective, low-frequency tuning and "novelty detection". These properties have been considered as evolutionary adaptations in the sensory system of the chirper, which allow it to detect signals effectively during the simultaneous calling of the sympatric sibling species. We propose that these two mechanisms, shared by the interneurons of both species, did not evolve in the chirper to guarantee its ability to detect the chirp under masking conditions. Instead we suggest that chirpers evolved an additional, 2-kHz component in their song and exploited pre-existing neuronal properties for detecting their song under masking noise. The failure of some interneurons to respond to the conspecific song in trillers does not prevent intraspecific communication, as other interneurons respond to the trill.

Classroom research in religious education: The potential of grounded theory

Grounded theory is one of the most common qualitative research strategies in social sciences. Currently, many applications of this theory are being developed for religious education. In the article it is argued that grounded theory deserves special attention for classroom research in religious education. For this reason, the basic features (fundamental openness and concurrence of data collection and analysis;constant comparison and asking analytical questions) as well as the coding strategies (open, axial, and selective) of grounded theory will be explained and concretised. An analysis of one example sequence demonstrates how grounded theory may be used to emphasise the communicative and substantive aspects (as well as the interaction between the two) of classroom interaction, therefore lending itself to data analysis. In this manner, grounded theory can also be used for an intensive analysis of a student's learning process, as the authors have done in one student profile analysis, as well as for a comparative analysis of teaching practice in an actual class or even a variety of classes.

An Emergent Model of End-users' Acceptance of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems: A Grounded Theory Approach

The success of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation depends, to a large extent, on end-users' acceptance of ERP systems, which in turn affects the intensity and nature of system use. To understand the phenomenon underlying end-users' acceptance of ERP systems, the authors conducted a grounded theory research in a large institution that implemented an ERP system. Through systematic coding and content analysis, the authors inductively derived a theoretical model to explain end-users' acceptance of ERP systems. Three categories-beliefs about the system, changes in job scope, and social influence - emerged from the data as direct antecedents of user acceptance. The data also suggest that "beliefs about the system" mediates the influence of "training and support" and "personal characteristics" on user acceptance, whereas "personal characteristics" moderate the influence of "changes in job scope" on user acceptance. The theoretical model that emerged from this qualitative study extends existing models of user acceptance by providing a more complete understanding of end-users' acceptance of ERP systems.

The purpose of this study is two-fold: (1) to explore the communication barriers and challenges that interdisciplinary researchers might encounter when collaborating with their counterparts from other disciplines, and (2) to survey how the researchers mitigate the hurdles in the collaboration processes. Eight interdisciplinary researchers from a research institute were recruited to participate in the study. They were individually interviewed with a semi-structured protocol. The interview transcripts were then analyzed using a grounded theory approach that consists of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding in sequence. The preliminary results show that the major communication hindrances include: domain disparity; discrepancies of individual researchers in terms of their perspectives, preferences, and behaviors; varied interpretations on the meanings of shared artifacts used by the interdisciplinary research groups; and divergence of personal motivation and engagement levels toward interdisciplinary collaboration. The participants considered active and constant learning to be the most useful strategy to cope with these communication obstacles. These findings yield some novel insights into the interdisciplinary collaboration effort and provide new empirical evidence to substantiate what previous studies have found. In addition, this study generates a deeper understanding about communication difficulties that interdisciplinary researchers might face, which can in turn be translated into practical implications for administrators and policy makers who are responsible for managing interdisciplinary collaborations.

Advanced Relationships Between Categories Analysis as a Qualitative Research Tool

The authors propose an advanced relationships between categories (RBC) model as an expansion of Tutty, Rothery, and Grinnell's (1996) qualitative tool for classifying RBC patterns as contained, temporal, and causal relationships. It is assumed that identification of the relationships obtained among categories of qualitative data paves the way for construction of a theory, even though few tools have been developed for this purpose to date. The advanced RBC model points to three additional relationship patterns: bilateral, trilateral, and quadrilateral relationships. These relationships reveal how the text itself links among its various components. The model serves as an innovative tool for systematic derivation of explanations based on the qualitative raw data, contributing to grounded theory and other interpretive studies. Quality scalable coding of selected region: Its modeling and H.263-based implementation

In this paper, a quality scalable coding for a selected region is presented. If one region is semantically more important than others, it is necessary for an image compression scheme to be capable of handling the regional semantic difference, because the information loss in the region of interest is more serious. We propose a quality scalable coding along with its model by introducing a quality scale parameter. It is a more extended and generalized image compression philosophy than the conventional coding. For an implementation of the proposed quality scalable coding, an H.263-based scheme is presented. This scheme controls temporal and spatial quality efficiently and improves the reconstructed image quality of the region of interest. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A selective coding method based on global/local motion information

A selective coding scheme is proposed that describes a method for coding image sequences, differentiating bits between background and target region. The suggested method initially estimates global motion parameters and local motion vectors. Then segmentation is performed with a hierarchical clustering scheme and a quad-tree algorithm in order to divide a given image into the background and target region. Finally, image coding is done by assigning more bits to the target region and less bits to background so that the target region may be reconstructed with a high quality. Simulations show that the suggested algorithm performs well especially in the circumstances where background changes and target region is small enough compared to the background.

This work addresses the delicate problem of lossy compression of medical images. More specifically, a selective allocation of coding resources is introduced based on the concept of "Diagnostic Interest" and an interactive methodology based on a new measure of "Diagnostic Quality". The selective allocation of resources is made possible by a selection a priori of regions of specific interest for diagnostic purpose. The idea is to change the precision of representation in a transformed domain of regions of particular interest, through a weighting procedure by an on-line user-defined quantization matrix. The overall compression method is multi-resolution (wavelet-based), provides for an embedded generation of the bit-stream and guarantees Jar a good rate-distortion trade-off, at various bit-rates, with spatially varying (ROI dependent) reconstruction quality. This work also analyzes the delicate issue of a professional usage of lossy compression in a PACS environment. The proposed compression methodology gives interesting insights in favor of using lossy compression in a controlled fashion by the expert radiologist. Most of the ideas presented in this work have been confirmed by extensive experimental simulations involving medical expertise.
