In a multimodal optimization task, the main purpose is to find multiple optimal solutions, so that the user can have a better knowledge about different optimal solutions in the search space and as and when needed, the current solution may be replaced by another optimum solution. Recently, we proposed a novel and successful evolutionary multi-objective approach to multimodal optimization. Our work however made use of three different parameters which had to be set properly for the optimal performance of the proposed algorithm. In this paper, we have eliminated one of the parameters and made the other two self-adaptive. This makes the proposed multimodal optimization procedure devoid of user specified parameters (other than the parameters required for the evolutionary algorithm). We present successful results on a number of different multimodal optimization problems of upto 16 variables to demonstrate the generic applicability of the proposed algorithm.

Finding the most efficient policy for the association of objects with threads is one of the main challenges in the deployment of concurrently executing objects, including actors. For the case of actor-based programs, libraries, frameworks, and languages provide fine tuning facilities for associating actors with threads. In practice, programmers use the default policy for the initial deployment of actors and the default policy is replaced with some other policies considering runtime behaviors of actors. Although this ad-hoc approach is widely used by programmers, it is tedious and time-consuming for large-scale applications. To reduce the time-consumption of the ad-hoc approach, a set of heuristics is proposed with the aim of balancing computations of actors across threads. This technique results in performance improvement;however, it relies on the static analysis of source codes and actors' behaviors, ends in the inappropriate configuration of systems in distributed environments. In this paper, we illustrate conditions that the proposed heuristics do not work well and propose a new approach based on the runtime profile of actors for better association of actors with threads. We also show how this approach can be extended to a fully self-adaptive approach and illustrated its applicability using a set of case studies.

SOH (state of health) of the single battery is considered to be an important basis for the maintenance and update of battery-power station. Combined with the changing relationship between the battery discharge voltage and some other factors, such as the discharge current, the discharge capacity, the internal resistance of the battery, and the remaining capacity, a new algorithm that can be used for the estimation of each single battery's SOH is proposed in this paper. Because of the fact that the parameters and the function curves in this algorithm could be obtained by the recursive least square algorithm and BP network, the algorithm can make self-adaptive adjustment even for tiny differences. Through the trial test on the lithium iron phosphate battery power station, it has been verified that the algorithm has high estimation accuracy.

In order to extend lifespan of the Wireless Sensor Node, the research propose a self-adaptive algorithm (SESP) based on energy assessment of WSN nodes with identical hardware model and same parameters. The algorithm SESP is able to choose the cluster head without sending message to learn the surplus energy of other nodes, thus reducing in-cluster communication and simplifying the calculation of energy assessment, and eventually reducing energy consumption of WSN nodes and extending their lifespan.

Among the penalty based approaches for constrained optimization, Augmented Lagrangian (AL) methods are better in at least three ways: (i) they have theoretical convergence properties, (ii) they distort the original objective function minimally to allow a better search behavior, and (iii) they can find the optimal Lagrange multiplier for each constraint as a by-product of optimization. Instead of keeping a constant penalty parameter throughout the optimization process, these algorithms update the parameters adaptively so that the corresponding penalized function dynamically changes its optimum from the unconstrained minimum point to the constrained minimum point with iterations. However, the flip side of these algorithms is that the overall algorithm is a serial implementation of a number of optimization tasks, a process that is usually time-consuming. In this paper, we devise a genetic algorithm based parameter update strategy to a particular AL method. The strategy is self-adaptive in order to make the overall genetic algorithm based augmented Lagrangian (GAAL) method parameter-free. The GAAL method is applied to a number of constrained test problems taken from the EA literature. The function evaluations required by GAAL in many problems is an order or more lower than existing methods.

The array transducer is a key unit to the phased ultrasound imaging systems. While, size error or element failure of elements are often occurred on the array transducer. Those situations could make serious negative effects on the acoustic field distribution of an array and impact on the quality of ultrasound imaging. In this context, we propose a method to revise those effects of the element failure of an array transducer by the method of adjusting the excitation parameters of elements. The theoretical analysis and experiments results indicate that this method is effective and feasible on optimizing ultrasound image gathered by an array transducer with some failed elements.

Accurate day-ahead electricity price forecasting (DEPF) has significant meanings in deregulated electrical power market due to its profitable function for all the participants to make reasonable decisions during the market business activities. However, the DEPF with satisfactory precision is difficult to be gained because of the violent volatility of electricity price caused by many factors. In this study, a multilayer perceptron artificial neural networks model is constructed for the DEPF in spot market of Nord Pool which is one of the most successful electrical power markets in the world. The major influencing factors are chosen by statistical methods called auto correlation function (ACF) and cross correlation function (CCF), and the standard error back-propagation algorithm is improved by using self-adaptive learning rate and self-adaptive momentum coefficient algorithm to make the training process more efficient both in global optimization and time saving. The most suitable structure of the network is determined by a trial-and-error experiment minimizing MAPE and MSRE of the network and several commonly used error indicators are employed to evaluate the goodness of fit performance of the model. The case study indicates that the DEPF of the proposed model is more reasonable and accurate, comparing with that of traditional ARIMA model.

The short-term power variations of renewable energy sources result in system state fluctuations and deviations from the scheduled operating point. Tracking short-term power variations and maintaining the system's optimality is challenging for traditional optimization methods due to their highly time-consuming nature. This paper proposes a short-timescale self -adaptive optimization strategy based on the nonlinear affine transformation to deal with this problem. Firstly, the multi -period optimization model is established and solved by considering static power -frequency characteristics to obtain an optimal operating point on a longer temporal scale, with the state security margins reserved using chance constraint programming. Next, analogously with the Taylor series, the nonlinear relationship between the system state variable and short-term power fluctuations is revealed through an analytic expression of the nonlinear affine transformation. Then, a self -adaptive optimization algorithm based on the nonlinear affine transformation is proposed to achieve frequency and voltage optimizations on a shorter temporal scale. With less communication, self -adaptive optimization is implemented at the local bus level to achieve more optimal states for short-term renewable power variations rapidly. Finally, simulations demonstrate that the proposed optimization strategy can effectively enhance frequency and voltage qualities, and decrease objective function, thereby improving the operation safety and economy.

An evolutionary discretized Lambert approach for optimal long-range rendezvous considering impulse limit

In this paper, an approach is presented for finding the optimal long-range space rendezvous in terms of fuel and time, considering limited impulse. In this approach, the Lambert problem is expanded towards a discretized multi-impulse transfer. Taking advantage of an analytical form of multi-impulse transfer, a feasible solution that satisfies the impulse limit is calculated. Next, the obtained feasible solution is utilized as a seed for generating individuals for a hybrid self-adaptive evolutionary algorithm to minimize the total time, without violating the impulse limit while keeping the overall fuel mass the same as or less than the one associated with the analytical solution. The algorithm eliminates similar individuals and regenerates them based on a combination of Gaussian and uniform distribution of solutions from the fuel-optimal region during the optimization process. Other enhancements are also applied to the algorithm to make it auto-tuned and robust to the initial and final orbits as well as the impulse limit. Several types of the proposed algorithm are tested considering varieties of rendezvous missions. Results reveal that the approach can successfully reduce the overall transfer time in the multi-impulse transfers while minimizing the fuel mass without violating the impulse limit. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm has superior performance over standard evolutionary algorithms in terms of convergence and optimality. (C) 2019 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Digital image correlation with self-adaptive scheme for interpolation bias reduction

In digital image correlation (DIC), the systematic error caused by intensity interpolation at sub-pixel positions, namely the overall interpolation bias, includes both interpolation bias and noise-induced bias. The overall interpolation bias is especially significant when the noise level is high or the image contrast is low. There is a pressing need to reduce the overall interpolation bias to improve the accuracy of DIC. However, existing approaches such as using a low-pass filter or a high-order interpolation require manually selected algorithm parameters, and cannot reduce the bias automatically. It is known that the overall interpolation bias is highly correlated with image gradient (and thus the contrast of the speckle image). This provides an opportunity to reduce the bias simply by adjusting the gradients. Inspired by the image enhancement technique which is used to alter image gradients (thus image contrast) by nonlinearly transforming its intensities (RGB, gray-value, etc), a DIC algorithm called the gray-level adaptive DIC (GA-DIC), based on a new correlation criterion with an additional adjustable parameter which controls the gradients, is proposed to reduce the overall interpolation bias. Both numerical and real experiments are applied to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the GA-DIC. The results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the overall interpolation bias without empirically selecting algorithm hyperparameters. Its effect is more significant in cases with higher image noise and poorer image quality.
