Based on the Hamiltonian governing equations of plane elasticity for sectorial domain, the variable separation and eigenfunction expansion techniques were employed to develop a novel analyticalfiniteelement for the fictitious crack model in fracture mechanics of concrete. The new analyticalelement can be implemented into FEM program systems to solve fictitious crack propagation problems for concrete cracked plates with arbitrary shapes and loads. Numerical results indicate that the method is more efficient and accurate than ordinary finiteelementmethod.

To facilitate long term infrastructure asset management systems, it is necessary to determine the bearing capacity of pavements. Currently it is common to conduct such measurements in a stationary manner, however the evaluation with stationary loading does not correspond to reality a tendency towards continuous and high speed measurements in recent years can be observed. The computational program SAFEM was developed with the objective of evaluating the dynamic response of asphalt under moving loads and is based on a semi-analytic elementmethod. In this research project SAFEM is compared to commercial finiteelement software ABAQUS and field measurements to verify the computational accuracy. The computational accuracy of SAFEM was found to be high enough to be viable whilst boasting a computational time far shorter than ABAQUS. Thus, SAFEM appears to be a feasible approach to determine the dynamic response of pavements under dynamic loads and is a useful tool for infrastructure administrations to analyze the pavement bearing capacity.

A semi-analytical finite element method (SAFE) has been widely used for calculating dispersion curves and mode shapes of guided waves as well as transient waves in a bar like structures. Although guided wave inspection is often conducted for water-loaded plates and pipes, most of the SAFE techniques have not been extended to a plate with leaky media. This study describes leaky Lamb wave calculation with the SAFE. We formulated a new solution using a feature that a single Lamb wave mode generates a harmonic plane wave in leaky media. Dispersion curves obtained with the SAFE agreed well with the previous theoretical studies, which represents that the SAFE calculation was conducted with sufficient accuracy. Moreover, we discussed dispersion curves, attenuation curves, and displacement distributions for total transmission modes and leaky plate modes in a single side and both two side water-loaded plate. In this paper we present a wave-based technique for modelling waveguides equipped with piezoelectric actuators in which there is no need for common simplifications regarding their dynamic behaviour, the interaction with the waveguide or the bonding conditions. The proposed approach is based on the semianalyticalfiniteelement (SAFE) method. We developed a new piezoelectric element and employed the analytical wave approach to model the distributed electrical excitation and scattering of the waves at discontinuities. The model was successfully verified numerically and validated against an experiment on a beam-like waveguide with emulated anechoic terminations. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Modelling the vibrational response of railway tracks is a mandatory step to predict rolling noise. This article proposes a model based on the semi-analytical finite element method (SAFE) taking into account the three main characteristics of railway tracks: infinite length in the longitudinal direction, deformable cross-section, and periodic track support. Although this approach is ideally suited to predict rail vibrations, numerical instabilities undermine its reliability at low frequencies. Consequently, a new approach using the second-order Arnoldi reduction (SOAR) is used, which allows to provide the required numerical stability. Lastly, numerical results are compared with classical railway track behaviours described in the literature, as well as experimental data and 3D finiteelement simulations. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. To increase heat exchange efficiency, finned tubes are widely used in petrochemical facilities. Recently, the application of guided wave testing to finned tube inspection has received attention. Since dispersion curves have not been obtained, the guided wave propagation process is still not clearly understood. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to calculate dispersion curves of the finned tube based on an accurate theoretical model, then features of guided waves propagating in finned tubes are further investigated. As fins are helicoidally welded around the outer surface of the tube with an equal interval, the semi-analytical finite element method is extended to this geometrically periodic wave guide. The shape of the discretized cross section is determined by geometric parameters of the finned tube. Numerical solutions show that group velocities of longitudinal modes in finned tubes are significantly slower than those in bare tubes and a special phenomenon of frequency pass bands and stop bands is presented. The changes of dispersion curves are also investigated with various geometric parameters of fins. Besides, torsional modes cannot propagate in finned tubes. By using an electromagnetic acoustic transducer, experimental results are in good agreement with numerical solutions, which indicates features of the guided wave propagation in finned tubes can be well predicted based on the proposed theoretical model. On the basis of a semi-analytical finite element method, an effective approach has been developed for studying transient processes of dynamic deformation of three-dimensional heterogeneous bodies of revolution and prismatic bodies of complex shape and structure by the action of time-and space-varying pulsed stressing with allowance for the plastic properties of the material and time-varying contact interaction conditions. New types of finiteelements have been created, on the basis of which computational relationships of the semi-analytical finite element method (SAFEM) for problems of dynamics have been constructed. Modified relationships of the Newmark method have been obtained, which have been formulated for the amplitude subsystems of SAFEM. Effective block iteration algorithms for the solution of large systems of nonlinear equations of SAFEM have been developed and realized.

We previously formulated a semi-analyticalfiniteelement technique for Lamb waves in a plate surrounded by fluids and investigated the dispersion curves and wave structures for leaky Lamb waves. Herein, this technique is extended to the calculation of transient responses both in a plate and in fluids for dynamic loading on the plate surface. To gain fundamental insights into guided wave inspection for a water-filled pipe or tank, guided waves generated upon transient loading of a flat plate water-loaded on one side were analyzed. The results show that a quasi-Scholte mode propagating at the plate-water interface is useful for the long-range inspection of a water-loaded plate because of its non-attenuation and minimal dispersion;moreover, this mode has superior generation efficiency in the low-frequency range, while it is localized near the plate-water interface at higher frequencies. Bearing capacity is a key index in pavement management systems in many countries, which reflects the essential material properties of asphalt pavements. Many stationary measuring methods have been undertaken in the past;current assessment of the bearing capacity tends towards fast and continuous measurements at traffic speed for a network analysis. The conventional evaluation using stationary loads do not represent real traffic loading condition;therefore the results will inevitably lead to discrepancies from reality. A specific computational program SAFEM based on semi-analytical finite element method is proposed to overcome the difficulty. The reliability and efficiency of the SAFEM is proved by verification with commercial FE software ABAQUS and field measurements. The variation tendency of the back-calculated bearing capacity has a quite good negative linear relation with the number of loading cycles in the experiment. The investigation shows this proposed assessment system is a feasible option for the fast and reliable analysis of the pavement bearing capacity at a network level for road administrations.
