Dynamic energy-aware sensor configuration in multi-application monitoring systems

A typical pervasive monitoring system like a smart building depends on an infrastructure composed of hundreds of heterogeneous wireless sensor devices. Managing the energy consumption of these devices poses a challenging problem that affects the overall efficiency and usability. Existing approaches for sensor energy consumption typically assume a single monitoring application to consume sensor data and a static configuration for sensor devices. In this paper, we focus on a multi-application context with dynamic requirements and multi-modal sensor devices. We present 3SoSM, an approach to optimize interactions between application requirements and wireless sensor environment in real-time. It relies on an energy-aware dynamic configuration of sensor devices to lower energy consumption while fulfilling application requirements. To bind together sensor configuration and dynamic management of data streams, we design a sustainable multi-application monitoring system architecture for pervasive environments that collects application requirements for sensor data streams and optimizes them into sensor configurations. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, a set of experiments are designed in the context of smart buildings. We comparatively evaluate our approach to show how dynamic sensor configuration for multiple monitoring applications indeed outperforms the mainstream duty-cycling method. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. High energy consumption of sensor devices is a major problem in smart building systems, since it strongly impacts the system lifetime. However, existing approaches are often fitted to a single monitoring application and rely on static configurations for sensor devices: optimization of their acquisition and transmission frequencies to actual multiple application requirements is not tackled. In this paper, we focus on energy-aware dynamic sensor device re-configuration to lower energy consumption while fulfilling real-time application requirements. We introduce the Smart-Service Stream-oriented sensor management (3SoSM) that binds together sensor configuration and management of sensor data streams. We present a multi-application monitoring system architecture that optimizes application requirements for data streams into sensor device configurations, and we relate the experiments with our experimental platform.

Smart building management systems become very popular research topics due to high energy consumption of buildings in developed countries. Proposed approaches in the literature commonly focus on smart building energy management systems to improve this high consumption and on network communications between deployed devices. However, these approaches are specialized for a single monitoring application, and adopt static wireless sensor device configurations. In this study, we focus on the energy and lifetime of the monitoring architecture itself. We consider a monitoring system as a set of applications that exploit sensor measures in real-time, where these applications are declaratively expressed as (service-oriented) continuous queries over sensor data streams. We tackle the optimization of interactions between application real-time requirements for data and wireless sensor devices that produces those data. In this context, we present a novel approach, an energy-aware dynamic sensor configuration mechanism for a sustainable declarative monitoring architecture that can support multiple applications. We first introduce formalization of application requirements and sensor configuration based on data acquisition/transmission and continuous stream queries. We then propose a self-adaptive energy-aware algorithm that dynamically generates optimized sensor configurations based on real-time query requirements. We also present a SmartService Stream-oriented sensor management (3SoSM) Gateway that optimizes sensor configurations and manages sensor data streams. Finally, we present a set of experiments we conducted with a wireless sensor network simulator and with a real Smart Building platform.

While the application range of Internet-of-Things (IoT) is manifold, all applications have monitoring purposes in common, but they usually lack (a) data collection options independent of pre-defined timing intervals and (b) a mobile access. Both options are requested by user that what to be informed about events (e.g., accidents, noise) even when not at home offering quick reactions (e.g., calling the ambulance, police, fire department) in case of emergency. Therefore, this paper introduces WebMaDa - a mobile access framework with a fine-grained privilege management solution. It allows authorized users to monitor collected data and to request data immediately and location-independent. if the user's access for pulling data is granted, the request is forward to the collection point (node) in the network, which answers with a full data set including all data available. Since some of this data might not be relevant to the requestor, it is filtered to match the user's request and to respect his privileges. To reduce the workload of the network, consisting of constrained devices, the filtering process is delegated to the server side of the application. The prototype of WebMaDa with pull support was implemented in a modular manner in order to adapt it to user-specific requests.

Many applications based-on sensor networks have recently been founded in industrial monitoring area. We motivate our technique in the context of the problem of sensor fault detection, sensor state recognition and health management. We use time windows to format the recent sensor data and the reduction results can be used to detect the data-centric faults. We divide sensors into groups and define the state transformation space to represent the normal sensor status. And we propose a lifetime prediction method for sensor management. We propose the framework of P7 which evaluates the sensor data from seven perspectives and give a ranking operator to each dimension respectively. Finally we figure out a health degree for the sensor. A system based-on P7 is proposed and we test this application for 14 months. The results of our case study indicate that P7 can detect not less than 90% sensor faults successfully and help the user to maintenance the sensor easily.

In this paper, we study how mobile computing and wireless technologies can be explored to provide effective ubiquitous healthcare services. Instead of reinventing the wheels, we make use of smartphones, off-the-shelf components, and existing technologies in ubiquitous computing (i.e. wireless and mobile positioning technologies, and data acquisition techniques and processing via sensors) to develop a middleware, and tools for the development of systems and applications to provide effective ubiquitous healthcare services. Two main tasks to be studied are: 1) Developing a framework, called SmartHealth, to provide the infrastructure and architectural support for realizing ubiquitous healthcare services;and 2) Designing and developing ubiquitous healthcare applications by utilizing the SmartHelath framework to let users experience and benefit from the provided services. We use scenarios to illustrate how mobile/wireless and sensor technologies can enable ubiquitous healthcare services in SmartHealth. Some of the examples included in SmartHealth are: location tracking, vital signs and well-being data acquisition and analysis, fall detection and behavior monitoring, and sleep analysis. As a start, based on the SmartHealth framework, we introduce a smartphone app, called SmartMood, for tracking the mood of patients who are suffering mood disorder (i.e., manic and depression) to demonstrate how SmartHealth can effectively enable ubiquitous healthcare services.

The advancement of the Internet of Things and wireless sensors has paved the way for the development of new services for next-generation healthcare systems to enable superior communication between healthcare professionals. This paper presents key components of the Wiki-Health Analysis Framework, which enables an ecosystem to support scientists, developers, and professionals to publish their data analysis models as utilities in the cloud and allow users to access those services and utilise their collected sensor data without any expert knowledge. The feasibility of this approach is supported by an ECG-based health monitoring service application deployed in addition to the Wiki-Health platform.
