This article introduces a concept for a general Multi-sensor / Multi-Platform planning and deployment system to be used in airborne Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance missions. Traditionally, armed forces have a large variety of different airborne vehicles and sensors at their disposal. To use these resources in a more effective manner, the aim is to deploy them cooperatively. In combination with the wide range of mission types, this approach results in challenging planning problems for a human mission planner. The complexity is increased further by the amount of data that can be collated by a multi-vehicle system during the mission execution. To improve the intelligence gathering capabilities whilst reducing the operator's workload, we strive to automatize the process partially. The analysis of available resources and related capabilities in conjunction with novel multi-sensor cooperation mechanisms, offer a promising approach. Within this paper we present the concept for a task-based cooperation manager offering an automatized process for the planning and monitoring of surveillance and reconnaissance missions. A detailed description of the system is provided, cooperation mechanisms are outlined, and a software architecture for validation and verification of the concept is presented.

Spatial queries in IoT-enabled Wireless sensor Networks enable the interrogation of specific areas using various geometric shapes such as rectangles or circles. Based on how spatial queries have been designed to be processed, the numerous approaches proposed to tackle this issue can be categorized into parallel and serial querying. On one hand, serial approaches have been proven to be more efficient in this context, but on the other hand, they are unable to handle deployments with communication voids. In particular, they fail to visit all nodes located inside the targeted windows, and thus fail to guarantee query completeness/accuracy. To fill this gap, which to the extent of our knowledge has not been addressed by any of the state-of-the-art approaches, we present in this paper, a novel serial approach that has been designed to handle all network topologies, including sparse, dense, large, hole-free, and more specifically topologies with communication voids. The obtained simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach in terms of time and energy, and show that it can ensure the accuracy of window queries under various topology conditions and changes.

A comparative evaluation method for enhanced- or synthetic-visual cues for helicopter operation under Degraded Visual Environment was invented. The flight task in the method is as simple as to track a winding road, that is located in a flat area. A series of flight test was conducted to evaluate a variety of sensors such as Image Intensifier, Long-wave Infra-Red sensor and Synthetic Terrain, under moonless night condition. The results show good correlation with comments from the pilots.

Wireless sensor Networks (WSN) are considered as a large distributed database, which can be queried using SQL-like language. Several Query Processing Systems (QPS) have been proposed, to extract data from WSN. Many WSN-based applications require fresh data and strict deadlines when they receive responses from the WSN. However, the QPS are not dedicated to ensure the temporal constraints like the temporal validity of data and the queries deadlines. In this paper, we propose a new model for Real-Time Query Processing System (RTQPS) in order to guarantee temporal constraints in WSN. Our system is based on the QPS architecture, including some components of real-time database management system (DBMS). RTQPS ensures efficient query dissemination and data collection. It provides deadline controllers to ensure real-time constraints and real-time schedulers to meet query deadlines. We have carried out many simulations in order to validate our approach.

Evaluating Risk to People and Property for Aircraft Emergency Landing Planning

General aviation and small unmanned aircraft systems are less redundant, may be less thoroughly tested, and are flown at lower cruise altitudes than commercial aviation counterparts. These factors result in a higher probability of a forced or emergency landing scenario. Currently, general aviation relies on the pilot to select a landing site and plan a trajectory, even though workload in an emergency is typically high, and decisions must be made rapidly. Although sensors can provide local real-time information, awareness of more distant or occluded regions requires database and/or offboard data sources. This paper considers different data sources and how to process these data to inform an emergency landing planner regarding risks posed to property, people on the ground, and the aircraft itself. Detailed terrain data are used for selection of candidate emergency landing sites. Mobile phone activity is evaluated as a means of real-time occupancy estimation. Occupancy estimates are combined with population census data to estimate emergency landing risk to people on the ground. Openly available databases are identified and mined as part of an emergency landing planning case study.

A number of sensor networks may produce a huge amount of data, and there has been a necessity the data are processed in a single system. However the viewing or navigating toward data interested has not been evolved suitably because of the overwhelming volumes of sensor data. This work introduces a data browsing technique from distributed databases of sensor data condensed according to semantics shared among servers. Web links of a colored presentation could enhance the view of sensor data indexed along a hierarchy from distributed databases in the geographic regions.

Robust Approximate Aggregation in sensor Data Management Systems

In the emerging area of sensor-based systems, a significant challenge is to develop scalable, fault-tolerant methods to extract useful information from the data the sensors collect. An approach to this data management problem is the use of sensor database systems, which allow users to perform aggregation queries such as MIN, COUNT, and AVG on the readings of a sensor network. In addition, more advanced queries such as frequency counting and quantile estimation can be supported. Due to energy limitations in sensor-based networks, centralized data collection is generally impractical, so most systems use in-network aggregation to reduce network traffic. However, even these aggregation strategies remain bandwidth-intensive when combined with the fault-tolerant, multi-path routing methods often used in these environments. To avoid this expense, we investigate the use of approximate in-network aggregation using small sketches. We present duplicate-insensitive sketching techniques that can be implemented efficiently on small sensor devices with limited hardware support and we analyze both their performance and accuracy. Finally, we present an experimental evaluation that validates the effectiveness of our methods.

Security and privacy issues for sensor databases

The most compelling sensor technology advances of this decade are deploying wireless networks of heterogeneous smart sensor nodes for complex information-gathering tasks. sensors in wireless sensor networks operate under a set of unique and fundamental constraints that make collaborative information-gathering tasks challenging. sensors in the network simultaneously participate in the collaborative decision making required for aggregation of data in an efficient way. Thus, the study of security and privacy for sensor databases in the context of sensor networks is at the very heart of technology advances for the next decade. The intent of this article is to bring together the fundamental concepts of security and privacy for sensor databases so that the unifying principles and underlying concepts of algorithm design may more easily be structured. We discuss several security issues. These include security policy;security architectures;secure sensor database functions;secure data distribution;the inference problem;the privacy problem;and tradeoffs between security, integrity, fault tolerance, and real-time processing for sensor data managers. Next we discuss security issues for sensor databases taking into consideration some unique constraints for sensor networks. Finally, we provide directions for future research on security for sensor databases.

Experiments on space robot arm path planning using the sensors database, part II

Two sensor-based path-planning methods are proposed to control the orientation of the main body and the arm position of a space robot simultaneously using only arm motion. In this study, the database of relationships between the current sensor states, the robot motion, and the change of sensor states is required. A modified breadth-first search, or A^* search, is then used to determine the arm path. It is possible to operate the robot and gather data simultaneously as well as to modify the database easily. The validity of the methods used is confirmed in experiments using a drop shaft, which provides 10's of microgravity during free fall.

Development and flight test of terrain-referenced guidance with ladar forward sensor

Military aircraft regularly conduct missions that include low-altitude, near-terrain flight to increase covertness and payload effectiveness. Civilian aircraft operate in this regime during airborne fire fighting, police surveillance, search and rescue, and helicopter emergency medical service applications. Several fixed-wing aircraft now employ terrain elevation maps and forward-pointed radars to achieve automated terrain following or terrain avoidance flight. Similar systems specialized to helicopters and their flight regime have not received as much attention. A helicopter guidance system relying on digitized terrain elevation maps has been developed that employs airborne. navigation, mission requirements, aircraft performance limits, and radar altimeter returns to generate a valley-seeking, low-altitude trajectory between waypoints. The guidance trajectory is symbolically presented to the pilot on a helmet-mounted display. In this work, a wide field of view laser radar forward sensor has been incorporated into this guidance system to expand the system's operational flight envelope and to assist the pilot in obstacle detection and avoidance. The development and flight test results of this guidance system are presented. Missions to 75 ft altitude at 80 kn in the presence of unmapped natural and man-made obstacles were achieved while the pilot maintained situational awareness and tracking of the guidance trajectory.
