This paper presents research work related to the development of Wireless sensor Networks (WSN) gathering environmental data from the surface of the Moon. dataaggregation algorithms are applied to reduce the amount of the multi-sensordata collected by the WSN, which are to be sent to a Moon orbiter and later to Earth. A particular issue that is of utmost importance to space applications is energy efficiency and a main goal of the research is to optimise the algorithm design so that the WSN energy consumption is reduced. An extensive simulation experiment is carried out, which confirms that the use of the proposed algorithms enhances significantly the network performance in terms of energy consumption compared to routing the raw data. In addition, the proposed dataaggregation algorithms are implemented successfully on a System-on-a-chip (SoC) embedded platform using a Xilinx Zynq FPGA device. The dataaggregation has two important effects: the WSN life time is extended due to the saved energy and the original data accuracy is preserved. This research could be beneficial for a number of future security related applications, such as monitoring of phenomena that may affect Earth's planetary security/safety as well as monitoring the implementation of Moon treaties preventing establishment of military bases on the lunar surface.

Threat-aware deployment of sensors and systems of robots can work in tandem to detect, assess, isolate and contain threats. In this paper, we introduce a model, design and a tiered-architectural implementation for a threat detection system. Our architecture proposes a group of heterogeneous operationally independent systems consisting of in- situ sensors, sensor robots (mobile sensors) and system of aerial reconnaissance sensors working in synergy. We propose a hierarchical deployment strategy to enhance the coverage of a threat with special emphasis on data integrity and reduction in false alarms.

The idea of using sensor networks for monitoring events is to utilize the distributed nature provided by these tiny and low powered devices. Multiple sensors can be used collaboratively to monitor events or space more effectively than a single sensor. Several applications can be envisioned with sensor networks ranging from military to commercial applications to environment and earth sciences, such as, traffic monitoring of vehicles, military reconnaissance and surveillance, cross-border infiltration, habitat monitoring, to name a few. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for tracking a moving object in an environment with densely deployed sensing devices.
