sensor faults of the accelerometer system impact the efficiency and security of the drilling process, so the sensor fault detection and isolation are significant. However, there are insufficient relevant studies on the accelerometer system affected by time-varying disturbances with unknown bounds. This paper proposes a residual generator based on the Zonotopic Kalman Filter with the process disturbance estimation, and the bounds of parametric uncertainties and measurement noises are obtained by calibration. Then, a fault detection test is realized by time-varying residual bounds regarded as the combinations of residuals and dynamic thresholds. Moreover, a fault isolation decision is developed by analyzing fault directions. Finally, simulation and experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The proposed method estimates time-varying process disturbances and performs better than existing methods. This paper provides a reference for the reliable appli-cation of the accelerometer system.

Deterministic learning-based sensor fault detection, isolation and accommodation of nonlinear systems

This paper presents a systematic deterministic learning-based rapid sensor fault detection, isolation and accommodation (SFDIA) scheme for a class of nonlinear systems with unmodeled output dynamics. First, locally accurate approximations of sensor faults and unmodeled output dynamics are achieved by using a deterministic learning-based neural network observer. Second, a sensor fault pattern bank which stores the knowledge of sensor faults and unmodeled output dynamics is established. A set of observers utilising the learned knowledge are constructed to generate residuals for rapid SFDIA. The contributions are: (1) the fault detectability and isolability conditions are rigorously analysed and verified in the simulation;(2) using the proposed fault accommodation approach, compared with online parameter adaptation techniques, better tracking performance can be achieved in the presence of sensor faults. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

An improved decentralized model for sensor fault detection and isolation demonstrated on an airplane system

With various modeling technologies applied, the sensor fault detection and isolation scheme based on the decentralized model (also referred to as dedicated observer scheme) becomes a popular approach for sophisticated systems. However, the commonly used modeling approach in many literatures that directly takes measurement values as model inputs may result in residual crosstalks and even false alarms. In this paper, the traditional decentralized model scheme is analyzed and a novel scheme based on the time window interactive prediction structure is proposed. Then, the Elman neural network is applied to model identification due to its nonlinear approximation and online learning properties. Finally, Simulations for comparison using the decoupled longitudinal motion model of some airplane are performed, and the results show that the proposed scheme has higher detection speed, lower false alarm rate and less undetected faults.

A sensor fault Diagnosis Method for a Lithium-Ion Battery Pack in Electric Vehicles

In electric vehicles, a battery management system highly relies on the measured current, voltage, and temperature to accurately estimate state of charge (SOC) and state of health. Thus, the normal operation of current, voltage, and temperature sensors is of great importance to protect batteries from running outside their safe operating area. In this paper, a simple and effective model-based sensor fault diagnosis scheme is developed to detect and isolate the fault of a current or voltage sensor for a series-connected lithium-ion battery pack. The difference between the true SOC and estimated SOC of each cell in the pack is defined as a residual to determine the occurrence of the fault. The true SOC is calculated by the coulomb counting method and the estimated SOC is obtained by the recursive least squares and unscented Kalman filter joint estimation method. In addition, the difference between the capacity used in SOC estimation and the estimated capacity based on the ratio of the accumulated charge to the SOC difference at two nonadjacent sampling times can also he defined as a residual for fault diagnosis. The temperature sensor which is assumed to be fault-free is used to distinguish the fault of a current or voltage sensor from the fault of a battery cell. Then, the faulty current or voltage sensor can be isolated by comparing the residual and the predefined threshold of each cell in the pack. The experimental and simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed sensor fault diagnosis scheme.

Review and experimental illustrations of electronic load controller used in standalone Micro-Hydro generating plants

Hydraulic Governor (HG) in Standalone Micro-Hydro generating Systems (SMHS), for maintaining voltage and frequency at desired levels, is not preferred as HG is much costlier than the generator. Electronic load controller (ELC) is a cost-effective solution for this application. Resistive (dump) load at an equal rating of generator is used to maintain constant voltage and frequency at the load perturbations. However, the system receives electrical and mechanical stresses as it operates at full load throughout the life which causes degradation of its component and lifetime reduction. This paper reviews the development trends of ELC used for SMHS and identifies the shortcomings of available technology for it. After the review, it proposes a novel methodology to enhance the generator efficiency and its lifespan by reducing the amount of dump load used. Performance of generator with conventional and proposed methodologies is investigated experimentally and lifespan is estimated through temperature profile. In addition, generator protection from sensor faults is enforced in proposed controller for enhancing the reliability of the system. (C) 2018 Karabuk University. Publishing services by Elsevier B.V.

Robust fault detection and isolation for proprioceptive sensors of robot manipulators

In this paper a scheme for detecting and isolating proprioceptive sensor faults in industrial robot manipulators is devised. To the purpose, an analytical redundancy approach has been pursued, based on a bank of state observers for residual generation. Namely, an extended H-infinity approach is adopted and the compensation of poorly known dynamics in each observer is improved by the use of a Radial Basis Functions (RBFs) neural network. The design of the observer matrix gain is achieved by solving a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) feasibility problem, where constraints on the position in the complex plane of the poles of the estimation error dynamics are taken into account. Finally, in order to test the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a case study is developed, based on experiments performed on a six-degree-of-freedom Comau Smart-3 S industrial manipulator. sensor fault detection and isolation method is proposed in this paper. The method is only based on the knowledge of the input and output data. Any parameter estimation nor system order determination are necessary. The proposed technique uses matrix projection in subspace framework. The sensitivity of the method to sensor faults is shown. The method is applied for sensor fault detection and isolation in a grinding circuit.

Subspace identification for FDI in systems with non-uniformly sampled multirate data

This paper proposes a novel subspace approach towards direct identification of a residual model for fault detection and isolation (FDI) in a system with non-uniformly sampled multirate (NUSM) data without any knowledge of the system. From the identified residual model, an optimal primary residual vector (PRV) is generated for fault detection. Furthermore, by transforming the PRV into a set of structured residual vectors, fault isolation is performed. The proposed algorithms have been applied to ail experimental pilot plant with NUSM data for sensor FDI, where different types of faults are successfully detected and isolated, fully validating the practicality and utility of the developed theory. A direct/functional redundancy scheme for fault detection and isolation on an aircraft

In this paper the problem of detecting and isolating sensor faults on aircraft, in the presence of external disturbances, is considered. A novel nonlinear observer based approach is proposed;this approach exploits the so-called Unknown Input Observer (UIO) theory and guarantees disturbance decoupling with an H-infinity performance level. The proposed nonlinear observer has been tested and compared with the classical linear UIO scheme via numerical simulations performed on the model of the small commercial aircraft under consideration;this simulation activity has shown the benefits of the novel approach. The proposed methodology is finally exploited to design an algorithm which, on the basis of the hardware and software measurements, decides if and where a fault has occurred, isolates the faulted signal, and outputs the corresponding healthy signal. Tests performed on the flight simulator of the National Aerospace Laboratory in Amsterdam show that this algorithm improves the performance of a classical duplex hardware system. Structured residual vector-based approach to sensor fault detection and isolation

This paper proposes a novel approach to detection and isolation of faulty sensors in multivariate dynamic systems. After formulating the problem of sensor fault detection and isolation in a dynamic system represented by a state space model, we develop the optimal design of a primary residual vector for fault detection and a set of structured residual vectors for fault isolation using an extended observability matrix and a lower triangular block Toeplitz matrix of the system. This work is, therefore, a vector extension to the earlier scalar-based approach to fault detection and isolation. Besides proposing a new algorithm for consistent identification of the Toeplitz matrix from noisy input and output observations without identifying the state space matrices {A, B, C, D}of the system, the main contributions of this newly proposed fault detection and isolation scheme are: (1) a set of structured residual vectors is employed for fault isolation;(2) after determination of the maximum number of multiple sensors that are most likely to fail simultaneously, a unified scheme for isolation of single and multiple faulty sensors is proposed;and (3) the optimality of the primary residual vector and the structured residual vectors is proven. We prove the advantage of our newly proposed vector-based scheme over the existing scalar element-based approach for fault isolation and illustrate its practicality by simulated and experimental evaluation on a multivariate pilot scale, computer interfaced system.
