This paper presents a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based sensorless current controller for a Salient Synchronous Machine (SSM). The implemented algorithm uses an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to estimate the rotor position. The used FPGA design methodology has been presented including functional simulations, development of the FPGA architecture and hardware in the loop tests. Some experimental results are provided so as to illustrate the efficiency and the interest of using FPGAs in such sensorless application.

This article presents a hybrid sensorless speed controller for permanent magnet synchronous motor drives using field programmable gate array technology. The I-f startup strategy is applied to permanent magnet synchronous motor drives at the startup condition and then it will smoothly switch to extended Kalman filter-based sensorless field-oriented control at the adequate condition. The I-f startup is a simple strategy and suitable for the low-speed sensorless control without initial rotor position estimation and machine parameters estimation. Meanwhile, the extended Kalman filter-based sensorless field-oriented control is appropriate for the medium- and high-speed sensorless control. Therefore, combining two approaches, the sensorless permanent magnet synchronous motor can be smoothly operated from a standstill to a high-speed condition. In this article, first, the mathematical modeling of permanent magnet synchronous motor is introduced. Also, the I-f startup strategy is conducted, and the rotor position estimation algorithm by extended Kalman filter is derived. Second, a very high-speed integrated circuit hardware description language is presented to describe the behavior of the adopted estimation and control algorithm. This application codes have been confirmed using Simulink and ModelSim co-simulation. Finally, a field programmable gate array-based experimental system is utilized to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid sensorless speed controller for a permanent magnet synchronous motor and a ceiling fan motor.

The recent field programmable gate array (FPGA) system on chip devices offer a new degree of design freedom. Indeed, these digital components allow the combination of software treatment (by the on-chip processor cores) and hardware treatment (hardware architecture made by the interconnection of the FPGA logic cells). In the field of industrial control applications, this digital technology is appropriate to reach an optimum between the control performances, the controller algorithm complexity and the design flexibility. On the other hand, a co-design methodology is necessary to make an efficient partitioning of the control algorithm so as to define modules to be software-made and modules to be hardware-made. To this aim, this paper deals with a co-design methodology adapted to SoC FPGA-based controllers for embedded power applications. The case study is a sensorless current controller of a synchronous machine using an extended Kalman filter (EKF). This co-design development is based on two reference implementations: a full software implementation and a full hardware implementation that are also discussed. Universal Digital controller for Boost CCM Power Factor Correction Stages Based on Current Rebuilding Concept

Continuous conduction mode power factor correction (PFC) without input current measurement is a step forward with respect to previously proposed PFC digital controllers. Inductor volt-second (nu s(L)) measurement in each switching period enables digital estimation of the input current;however, an accurate compensation of the small errors in the measured nu s(L) is required for the estimation to match the actual current. Otherwise, they are accumulated every switching period over the half-line cycle, leading to an appreciable current distortion. A nu s(L) estimation method is proposed, measuring the input (nu(g)) and output voltage (nu(o)). Discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) occurs near input line zero crossings and is detected by measuring the drain-to-source MOS-FET voltage nu(ds). Parasitic elements cause a small difference between the estimated voltage across the inductor based on input and output voltage measurements and the actual one, which must be taken into account to estimate the input current in the proposed sensorless PFC digital controller. This paper analyzes the current estimation error caused by errors in the ON-time estimation, voltage measurements, and the parasitic elements. A new digital feedback control with high resolution is also proposed. It cancels the difference between DCM operation time of the real input current, (T-DCM(g)) and the estimated DCM time (T-DCM(reb)). Therefore, the current estimation is calibrated using digital signals during operation in DCM. A fast feedforward coarse time error compensation is carried out with the measured delay of the drive signal, and a fine compensation is achieved with a feedback loop that matches the estimated and real DCM time. The digital controller can be used in universal applications due to the ability of the DCM time feedback loop to autotune based on the operation conditions (power level, input voltage, output voltage...), which improves the operation range in comparison with previous solutions

Design of a chaos synchronisation-based maximum power tracking controller for a wind-energy-conversion system

This study proposes a maximum power tracking (MPT) controller based on chaos synchronisation (CS) for a wind-energy-conversion system. The output power conversion of a wind generator depends on the wind speed, and therefore the optimal conversion of wind energy can be obtained by a variable-speed variable-frequency model. Based on a sensorless controller, CS can express dynamic behaviours by using an incremental conductance to adjust the terminal voltage to the maximum power point. A voltage detector based on the Sprott system is used to track the desired voltage and to control the duty cycle of a boost converter. For a permanent-magnet synchronous generator, the simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed MPT controller.

An improved and more robust flux vector orientated control scheme for an emerging doubly-fed reluctance generator without a shaft angular position or velocity sensor has been proposed, computer-simulated, and experimentally verified. Whilst retaining the cost and other advantages of using a fractional power electronics converter rating, this promising medium-speed brushless machine technology has been viewed by research and industrial communities as an appealing economical solution for the compromised reliability and high maintenance requirements associated with the presence of slip rings, brushes, and the failures prone three-stage gearbox of conventional wound rotor doubly-fed induction generators, traditionally deployed for commercial wind turbines. The comprehensive comparative simulation and test results obtained have been shown to agree very well undoubtedly demonstrating the good overall performance of the sensorless controller. A precise speed reference tracking with smooth, intrinsically decoupled real and reactive power responses of the grid-connected winding has been achieved for the typical variable loading profiles and narrow speed ranges (e.g. around $2:1$2:1 or so) of a laboratory emulated wind turbine.

The aim of this paper is to present a fully FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) based Sensor less controller for a Synchronous Motor (SM). The estimation of the rotor position and speed is achieved using an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). The drive also incorporates a PI-based controller for stator currents and a hysteresis-based controller for rotor current. The objective of this work is to prove the ability of a FPGA to ensure the required performances in terms of execution time, consumed resources and sensorless control quality. The developed architecture of the EKF is presented and a discussion about the time/area performances is made. Some experimental results are provided in order to prove the reliability and the efficiency of the developed control system.

To improve the efficiency of switched reluctance motors (SRMs), detecting the correct position of the rotor is essential. Many sensorless control methods have been proposed, which everyone follows different techniques. Most of control procedures are related to a high speed analog-to-digital converter and also are required a large volume data processing. In this paper, a new method has been provided which has high reliability and also increase the possibility of rotor position recognizing from aligned to unaligned states on several points. By injecting a pattern of frequencies to the un-energized phase and comparing the amplitude of the output signals after a notch filter on the last stage with reference voltages, the position of the rotor can be determined on several points without the need of measuring any analog parameters. In this proposed, the produced excitation pulses have been compared with the output pulses from the Hall Effect sensors which are embedded on the motor shaft. With this approach, the verification of the proposed method is confirmed.

In this paper, a speed sensorless vector controlled permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) driven single-stage solar water pumping system is proposed. The back-emf based rotor position estimation technique is used. The PMSM speed is controlled through sliding mode controller (SMC) based vector control. The solar photovoltaic (PV) array feeds power to a voltage source inverter (VSI), which drives the PMSM. The PV array is regulated at maximum power point by VSI, which also controls the armature winding currents. The hysteresis current controller produces switching signals for VSI. The reference speed command is generated using output of DC link SMC controller and DC link feed-forward term. The proposed system is designed, modeled and simulated on MATLAB/Simulink platform. The performance of proposed system is obtained for starting, steady-state and dynamic conditions under variable solar irradiations. Test results are obtained on a developed prototype of the system in the laboratory to validate the control algorithm and modeling of the system.
