Increasing deployment of combined heat and power plants intensifies interactions between renewable-based electric power systems and district heating systems. Combined heat and power dispatch is thus critical for energy-efficient coordination of integrated electricity and heat systems under high penetration of renewable energy. However, the complicated nature of district heat flows introduces significant nonlinearities and precludes the practical implementation. In this paper, a combined heat and power dispatch method based on a simplified district heat flow model is proposed to enhance the computational efficiency with desirable accuracy for better operational decisions. Several novel modifications are incorporated to reduce the model size and relieve the model nonlinearity through analyzing operational principles of district heating networks. An iterative solution algorithm is developed accordingly based on sequential linear programming to boost computational efficiency and guarantee fast convergence. The proposed method can describe temperature dynamics of district heating systems with respect to transmission delays and heat losses without assumptions on constant mass flow rates or constant supply temperature. Case studies based on a test system validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Efficiency of bio- and socio-inspired optimization algorithms for axial turbomachinery design

Turbomachinery design is a complex problem which requires a lot of experience. The procedure may be speed up by the development of new numerical tools and optimization techniques. The latter rely on the parameterization of the geometry, a model to assess the performance of a given geometry and the definition of an objective functions and constraints to compare solutions. In order to improve the reference machine performance, two formulations including the off-design have been developed. The first one is the maximization of the total nominal efficiency. The second one consists to maximize the operation area under the efficiency curve. In this paper five optimization methods have been assessed for axial pump design: Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Cuckoo Search (CS), Teaching Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) and sequential linear programming (SLP). Four non-intrusive methods and the latter intrusive. Given an identical design point and set of constraints, each method proposed an optimized geometry. Their computing time, the optimized geometry and its performances (flow rate, head (H), efficiency (eta), net pressure suction head (NPSH) and power) are compared. Although all methods would converge to similar results and geometry, it is not the case when increasing the range and number of constraints. The discrepancy in geometries and the variety of results are presented and discussed. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to validate the reference and optimized machines performances in two main formulations. With the increasement of gas-fired generators, the coupling of power system and natural gas network has been strengthened. To guarantee the security and efficiency of energy supply, a joint day-ahead market clearing framework for natural gas, electricity energy and reserve is proposed considering linepack. Security-constrained unit commitment is first modelled to determine generator status and gas flow direction which is solved by a second-order cone relaxation. Second, economic dispatch model is presented to decide market clearing results. A special sequential linear programming (SLP) is proposed to solve the nonlinear market clearing problem and automatic price transmission from natural gas to electricity based on Lagrangian multipliers of coupling constraints is proved. Numerical cases are tested to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed model and algorithm and the effect of linepack on dispatching and pricing results is analyzed.

Design of shaped offset cable mesh reflector antennas considering structural flexible property

Contoured beams are required in the next design period of cable mesh reflector antennas. This study presents a new approach for synthesising contoured beams by integrated structural-electromagnetic optimisation concept. A multidisciplinary optimisation model is established from the viewpoint of interaction between structural and electromagnetic disciplines. The structural parameters are directly optimised to produce contoured beams. To consider the structural flexible property, sensitivity analysis of radiation pattern with respect to surface nodal displacements and further to structural parameters is performed in the approach. With both the information of structural and electromagnetic sensitivities, the optimisation model is expanded and solved by a sequential linear programming. Simulation results of a contoured beam covering the continental United States (CONUS) verify its effectiveness.

An SLP-active set approach for feasibility restoration in power systems

We consider power networks in which it is not possible to satisfy all loads at the demand nodes, due to some attack or disturbance to the network. We formulate a model, based on AC power flow equations, to restore the network to feasibility by adjusting load at demand nodes or power production at generators, but doing so in a way that minimizes a weighted measure of the total power adjustment, and affects as few nodes as possible. Besides suggesting an optimal response to a given attack, our approach can be used to quantify disruption, thereby enabling "stress testing" to be performed and vulnerabilities to be identified. Optimization techniques including nonsmooth penalty functions, sequential linear programming, and active-set heuristics are used to solve this model. We describe an algorithmic framework and present convergence results, including a quadratic convergence result for the case in which the solution is fully determined by its constraints, a situation that arises frequently in the power systems application.

This study presents a linear programming (LP)-based multivariable root locus following technique for coordinating the gain settings of power system stabilisers (PSSs). The stabiliser robustness is accounted for in the design problem by simultaneously considering the state-space representations and multivariable root loci corresponding to different operating scenarios. The proposed technique computes a curve in the PSS gain parameter space such that when the PSS gains move along this curve to their optimal values, the branches of the corresponding multivariable root loci terminate at satisfactory points in the complex plane. The curve in the gain parameter space is computed via a linear program that successively minimises the Euclidean distance between the unsatisfactory and satisfactory eigenvalue locations. The design method is demonstrated on a 39-bus test system with 14 operating scenarios. A comparison is carried out between the coordination results of two PSS structures, one involving two phase-lead blocks and the other comprised of two phase-lead blocks and a phase-lag block.

A generic column generation principle: derivation and convergence analysis

Given a non-empty, compact and convex set, and an a priori defined condition which each element either satisfies or not, we want to find an element belonging to the former category. This is a fundamental problem of mathematical programming which encompasses nonlinear programs, variational inequalities, and saddle-point problems. We present a conceptual column generation scheme, which alternates between solving a restriction of the original problem and a column generation phase which is used to augment the restricted problems. We establish the general applicability of the conceptual method, as well as to the three problem classes mentioned. We also establish a version of the conceptual method in which the restricted and column generation problems are allowed to be solved approximately, and of a version allowing for the dropping of columns. We show that some solution methods (e.g., Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition and simplicial decomposition) are special instances, and present new convergent column generation methods in nonlinear programming, such as a sequential linear programming type method. Along the way, we also relate our quite general scheme in nonlinear programming presented in this paper with several other classic, and more recent, iterative methods in nonlinear optimization.

Managing a gas transport network is a complex problem because of the number of possibilities of routing the gas through the pipes. The most important aim in this kind of systems is to fulfill the demand within the pressure bounds, independently of its associated costs. However, in the present work some cost drivers are also taken into account by means of different objective functions in order to manage the network in an efficient way. This work deals with mathematical modeling and optimization of gas transport networks, where a two-stage procedure is proposed. In the first stage, optimization algorithms based on mathematical programming are applied to make some decisions (whether to activate compressor stations, control valves and other control elements) and gives an initial solution to the second stage. This last stage, which is based on control theory techniques, refines the solution to obtain more accurate results. Due to the reduced complexity in each stage, both can be solved within reasonable runtimes for relatively large gas networks. A discontinuous quasi-upper bound limit analysis approach with sequential linear programming mesh adaptation

In this paper, a simple discontinuous upper bound limit analysis approach with sequential linear programming mesh adaptation is presented. Rigid, infinitely strong triangular elements with both linear and Bezier curved edges are considered. A possible jump of velocities is allowed at the interfaces between contiguous elements, thus allowing plastic dissipation on curved interfaces. Bezier curved edges are used with the sole aim of improving the element performance when dealing with limit analysis problems involving curved sliding lines. The model performs poorly for unstructured meshes (i.e. at the initial iteration), being unable to reproduce the typical plastic deformation concentration on inclined slip lines. Therefore, an iterative mesh adaptation based on sequential linear programming is proposed. A simple linearization of the non-linear constraints is performed, allowing to treat the non-linear programming (NLP) problem with consolidated linear programming (LP) routines. The choice of inequalities constraints on elements nodes coordinates turns out to be crucial on the algorithm convergence. Several examples are treated, consisting in the determination of failure loads for ductile, purely cohesive and cohesive-frictional materials. The results obtained at the final iteration fit well, for all the cases analyzed, previously presented numerical approaches and analytical predictions. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
