Constructing intelligent manufacturing systems and optimizing scheduling management is of economic significance. To apply the flexible job-shop scheduling problem to specific manufacturing fields, such as the food fermentation industry and aerospace industry, in which each product is required to be delivered within its due window, this paper establishes the mixed-integer nonlinear programming model for the flexible job-shop scheduling problem with due windows and develops a bi-level closed-loop heuristic algorithm to minimize the weighted earliness or tardiness. In the upper level, the genetic algorithm is used to optimize each job's processing path and sequence iteratively. In the lower level, the sequential quadratic programming determines the start time for each operation of each job by solving a nonlinear programming problem. The convergence of the algorithm is analyzed. Experimental results show that the algorithm can efficiently solve the optimal solution or approximate optimal solution of the problem. As a general idea of dividing integer and continuous solution space, the algorithm is robust to the field and details of the problem.

Dynamic production optimization for offshore Electric Submersible Pump oilfields based on oil-water two phase virtual flow metering

Enhancing offshore oilfield production is critical, but optimizing production equipment parameters presents significant challenges due to the difficulty in obtaining accurate fluid properties and the necessity for precise equipment models. Multiphase flow calculations depend on preset fluid parameters, which are particularly challenging to determine in offshore environments. This paper proposes a virtual measurement method tailored for reservoir, well, and pipeline network models in offshore oilfields. The approach involves calibrating the Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) model and calculating the viscosity of oil-water emulsions to assess phase separation and fluid water content within the well. By utilizing revised data and production efficiency indicators, the optimal ESP operating frequency is determined to enhance offshore oilfield production. Adjusting the operating parameters based on these calculations enables continuous production optimization until the discrepancy between real-time data and computed results falls within the acceptable accuracy range. This method conserves substantial capital investment, enhances operational efficiency, and significantly boosts enterprise profitability.

Bayesian Support Vector Regression for Reliability-Based Design Optimization

Solving reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) by combining surrogate models is a powerful tool to deal with the output variation induced by uncertainties during actual engineering design. This paper aims to develop a strategy for solving RBDO problems by support vector regression (SVR) under the Bayesian inference, referred to as Bayesian SVR (BSVR). The BSVR model possesses the features of original SVR as well as providing the prediction variance to direct the sequential sampling process for probabilistic analysis in RBDO. In the meanwhile, a learning function combined with the sample pool truncation strategy is proposed to select the new training samples to adaptively update the BSVR model, which can accurately and efficiently approximate the important probabilistic constraint boundaries in the desired regions, and the newly selected training samples tend to be far away from the existing training points under the current design to avoid clustering. The computational capability and the good engineering applicability of the proposed method are verified by three numerical examples and two engineering applications about a stiffened rib of the wing edge and a latch-lock mechanism of the cabin hatch.

Geometric-Dynamic Trajectory: A Quaternion Pythagorean Hodograph Curves Approach

Trajectory generation remains one of the primary challenges in achieving true autonomy, especially in relation to universal applicability needed for coordination as well as scalability of both the environment and number of obstacles. Geometric-dynamic approaches offer a universal solution to trajectory generation that is both intuitive and computationally efficient. In this paper, an extension of Bezier spline-based techniques is presented that exploits the quaternion structure of a Pythagorean hodograph curve to include the orientation of the vehicle in a four-dimensional trajectory specification. The trajectory is constructed to achieve G2 continuity and paired with a timing law that ensures C2 continuity. Various kinodynamic evaluation parameters are derived and presented for use in trajectory optimization, and the technique is demonstrated on a high-fidelity nonlinear model of an F16 jet. The segmented nature of this approach allows for the efficient scaling of the algorithm to large environments with long and complex trajectories, which combined with efficient spatial separation computations allow for environments with multiple obstacles or trajectories. The focus of this paper is on the method used to represent the trajectory rather than the optimization algorithm that finally exploits this structure to generate the optimal trajectory.

Research on the configuration design and energy management of a novel plug-in hybrid electric vehicle based on the double-rotor motor and hybrid energy storage system

Aiming at the problems of conventional plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), a novel PHEV configuration called DH-PHEV is proposed based on double-rotor motor (DRM) and hybrid energy storage system (HESS). For improving the comprehensive efficiency and reducing the charging/discharging rate of battery, the comprehensive energy management strategy (CEMS) is studied. Firstly, a rule-based torque allocation strategy is proposed based on the DH-PHEV configuration, the DRM operating characteristics, and the HESS operating states. The torque allocation of DRM is optimized based on the sequential quadratic programming. Secondly, the power allocation between battery and supercapacitor is optimized based on the dynamic programming (DP), with the goal of reducing the charging/discharging rate of battery and minimizing the energy consumption. The CEMS for DH-PHEV is proposed based on the DP optimization results and DRM torque allocation. Finally, the feasibility and adaptability of DH-PHEV configuration and CEMS are verified. The results show that the adaptability of CEMS under different driving cycles is excellent, and the operating modes are reasonable. The comprehensive efficiency and the charging/discharging rate of battery are optimized effectively. Under 6 WLTCs and 16 actual vehicle driving cycles, the pure electric driving range for DH-PHEV is improved by 1.07 % and 4.36 %, respectively.

Fast quantum control helps reduce the influence of unavoided disturbances and hence plays a vital role in practical quantum technology and chemical reactions. Instead of optimizing the terminal cost like standard optimal quantum control methods, this paper formulates the problem as a trajectory optimization problem, and implements the sequential quadratic programming algorithm to search for short control fields. The core idea is to minimize the cumulative intermediate error to incentivize early achievement of the designed gate. The numerical result on the Toffoli gate demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Multi-objective design optimization of hydrodynamic journal bearings using a hybrid approach

Purpose In this work, the design problem of hydrodynamic plain journal bearings is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem to improve bearing performance under different operating conditions. Design/methodology/approach The problem is solved using a hybrid approach combining genetic algorithm and sequential quadratic programming. The selected state variables are oil leakage flow rate, power loss and minimum oil film thickness. The selected design variables are the radial clearance, length-to-diameter ratio, oil viscosity, oil supply pressure and oil supply groove angular position. A validated empirical model is adopted to provide relatively accurate estimation of the bearing state variables with reduced computations. Pareto optimal solution sets are obtained for different operating conditions, and secondary selection criteria are proposed to choose a final optimum design. Findings The adopted hybrid optimization approach is a random search algorithm that generates a different solution set for each run, thus a different bearing design. For a number of runs, it is found that the key design variables that significantly affect the optimum state variables are the bearing radial clearance, oil viscosity and oil supply pressure. Additionally, oil viscosity is found to represent the significant factor that distinguishes the optimum designs obtained using the implemented secondary selection criteria. Finally, the results of the proposed optimum design framework at different operating conditions are presented and compared. Originality/value The proposed multi-objective formulation of the bearing design problem can provide engineers with a systematic approach and an important degree of flexibility to choose the optimum design that best fits the application requirements.

Sharp turns or corners within a structure lead to local failures well before the rest of the structure due to the creation of stress concentrations. For a load-bearing waveguide, these occur at the corners of the slots. After modeling a test waveguide, a bivariate curve fit was created to model these stress concentrations, based on four configurations for a single slot length, then refined into a trivariate form based on an expanded eight cases across two slot lengths. Once properly formatted, the integration of the bivariate function into an optimization allowed stress concentration to be estimated at the slot corners within a coarse low-fidelity model, rather than the high-fidelity model otherwise required, following the expected behavior and acting as a verification case. Implementation of the full trivariate form into a design optimization enabled use of the concentration factor to estimate the critical stress. The study showed that the inset copper waveguide could not be loaded from the outset, and that an offset of the copper waveguide could avoid overloading it.

Flutter Optimization of a Wing-Engine System with Passive and Active Control Approaches

In the present study, the flutter performance of a composite thin-walled beam wing-engine system is optimized by implementing two different control approaches: 1) passive open-loop and 2) active closed-loop control. sequential quadratic programming and genetic algorithm methods are applied in the optimization process. In the passive control method, variable stiffness is acquired by constructing laminates of thin-walled beam with curvilinear fibers having prescribed paths. The goal is to exploit the desirable fiber paths with improved flutter performance to determine an optimized wing-engine aeroelastic configuration. In the active control strategy, piezo-composite actuators and the linear quadratic Gaussian algorithm are used to improve the flutter characteristics. A novel optimization strategy based on the total energy of the aeroelastic system is introduced and applied in both passive and active control strategies. The minimum total aeroelastic energy is an indication of ideal optimization variables, which leads to optimum flutter performance. The governing equations are formulated based on Librescu's thin-walled beam theory and Hamilton's principle. An unsteady aerodynamic model based on incompressible indicial aerodynamics is applied. The governing equations of motion are solved using a Ritz-based solution methodology. Numerical results demonstrate a 16 and 46% improvement in the flutter speed of the wing-engine system using the proposed passive and active control approaches, respectively. The presented results provide valuable information concerning the design of advanced lightweight and high-aspect-ratio aircraft wings with mounted engines in terms of favorable aeroelastic performance characteristics.

Geometry and topology optimization of plane frames for compliance minimization using force density method for geometry model

A new method is proposed for simultaneous optimization of shape, topology and cross section of plane frames. Compliance against specified loads is minimized under constraint on structural volume. Difficulties caused by the melting nodes can be alleviated to some extent by introducing force density as design variables for defining the geometry, where the side constraints are assigned for force density to indirectly avoid the existence of extremely short members. Force density method is applied to an auxiliary cable-net model with different boundary and loading conditions so that the regularity of force density matrix is ensured by positive force densities. Sensitivity coefficients of the objective and constraint functions with respect to the design variables are also explicitly calculated. After the optimal geometry of the frame is obtained, the topology is further improved by removing the thin members and combining closely spaced nodes. It is demonstrated in the numerical examples of three types of frames that rational geometry and topology can be achieved using the proposed method, and the effect of bending moment on the optimal solution is also discussed.
