Small-signal stability constrained unit commitment based on decomposition and SQP-GS

This paper proposes a small-signal stability constrained unit commitment(SSSC-UC) model to ensure that the solution of SCUC can provide a sufficient small-signal stability margin. To solve the model, Benders decomposition (BD) is applied to separate the problem into a SCUC master problem, which is a mixed integer linear programming problem, and a series of subproblems to check the AC power flow constraint and small-signal stability constraint. The small-signal stability check subproblems are non-smooth and nonlinear programming problems, which are solved by sequential quadratic programming with Gradient Sampling (SQP-GS). When the subproblem checks do not pass, cuts formed by the sensitivity of the spectral abscissa with respect to generator output are added to the master problem for the next iteration of the SCUC. The iteration process continues until all AC power flow and small-signal constraint violations are eliminated and a SCUC solution is found. Simulations on the New England 10-machine 39-bus system and the IEEE 54-machine 118-bus system show that our proposed SSSC-UC can guarantee small-signal stability for all time periods while SCUC cannot. Furthermore, the proposed parallel technique can speed up the computation up to 5 and 11 times respectively for the two test systems.

A sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method is presented that aims to overcome some of the drawbacks of contemporary SQP methods. It avoids the difficulties associated with indefinite quadratic programming subproblems by defining this subproblem to be always convex. The novel feature of the approach is the addition of an equality constrained quadratic programming (EQP) phase that promotes fast convergence and improves performance in the presence of ill conditioning. This EQP phase uses exact second-order information and can be implemented using either a direct solve or an iterative method. The paper studies the global and local convergence properties of the new algorithm and presents a set of numerical experiments to illustrate its practical performance.

The design of integrated intelligent computing solver with Morlet wavelet neural networks (MW-NNs) is presented for solving the mathematical predator-prey model by exploiting the strength of MW-NNs modeling, optimization ability of global search with genetic algorithms (GAs) and rapid local search eminence of sequential quadratic programming (SQP), i.e., MW-NNs-GA-SQP. The proposed MW-NNs-GA-SQP scheme is used to analyze the predator-prey dynamics for six different variables coefficient values. The validation, correctness and reliability of the presented MW-NNs-GA-SQP technique is attained through the consistent matched outcomes with the reference Adams numerical results. Moreover, statistics investigations have been accomplished to verify the precision and accuracy of the outcomes with proposed MW-NNs-GA-SQP solver via the performances of Theil's inequality coefficient, Nash Sutcliffe efficiency and mean absolute error.(c) 2022 The Author(s). Optimal Design of Bubble Deck Concrete Slabs: Serviceability Limit State

In engineering practice, one can often encounter issues related to optimization, where the goal is to minimize material consumption and minimize stresses or deflections of the structure. In most cases, these issues are addressed with finite element analysis software and simple optimization algorithms. However, in the case of optimization of certain structures, it is not so straightforward. An example of such constructions are bubble deck ceilings, where, in order to reduce the dead weight, air cavities are used, which are regularly arranged over the entire surface of the ceiling. In the case of these slabs, the flexural stiffness is not constant in all its cross-sections, which means that the use of structural finite elements (plate or shell) for static calculations is not possible, and therefore, the optimization process becomes more difficult. This paper presents a minimization procedure of the weight of bubble deck slabs using numerical homogenization and sequential quadratic programming with constraints. Homogenization allows for determining the effective stiffnesses of the floor, which in the next step are sequentially corrected by changing the geometrical parameters of the floor and voids in order to achieve the assumed deflection. The presented procedure allows for minimizing the use of material in a quick and effective way by automatically determining the optimal parameters describing the geometry of the bubble deck floor cross-section. For the optimal solution, the concrete weight of the bubble deck slab was reduced by about 23% in reference to the initial design, and the serviceability limit state was met.

Constrained multiple indicator kriging using sequential quadratic programming

Multiple indicator kriging (MIK) is a nonparametric method used to estimate conditional cumulative distribution functions (CCDF). Indicator estimates produced by MIK may not satisfy the order relations of a valid CCDF which is ordered and bounded between 0 and 1. In this paper a new method has been presented that guarantees the order relations of the cumulative distribution functions estimated by multiple indicator kriging. The method is based on minimizing the sum of kriging variances for each cutoff under unbiasedness and order relations constraints and solving constrained indicator kriging system by sequential quadratic programming. A computer code is written in the Matlab environment to implement the developed algorithm and the method is applied to the thickness data. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A novel design of stochastic numerical computing method is introduced for computational fluid dynamics problem governed with nonlinear thin film flow (TFF) system by exploiting the competency of polynomial splines for discretization and optimization with evolutionary computing aided with brilliance of local search. The TFF model of second grade fluid is represented with nonlinear second-order differential system. The aim of the present work is to exploit the cubic spline approach (CSA) to transform the differential equations for TFF model into an equivalent set of nonlinear equations. The approximation in mean squared error sense is introduced for the formulation of cost function for solving the nonlinear system of equations representing TFF model. The optimization of the decision variables of the cost function is carried out with global search efficacy of evolution by genetic algorithms (GAs) integrated with sequential quadratic programming (SQP) for speedy adjustments. The designed spline-evolutionary computing paradigm, CSA-GA-SQP, is evaluated for different scenarios of TFF model by variation of second grade and magnetic parameters, as well as variation in the length of splines. Results endorsed the worth of CSA-GA-SQP solver as an efficient alternative, reliable, stable, and accurate framework for the variants of nonlinear TFF systems on the basis of multiple autonomous executions. The design computing spline paradigm CSA-GA-SQP is a promising alternative numerical solver to be implemented for the solution of stiff nonlinear systems representing the complex scenarios of computational fluid dynamics problems.

Design of a robust load frequency control using sequential quadratic programming technique

This paper presents a new methodology, named sequential quadratic programming (SQP), to design a robust PID controller for Load Frequency Control (LFC) of nonlinear interconnected power systems. This method easily copes with the nonlinear constraints such as Generation Rate Constraint (GRC) and it can be directly used on a nonlinear model of a multi-machine power system. The proposed controller is simple, effective and can ensure that the overall system performance is desirable. The robust performance of the proposed controller is compared with that of a conventional PI controller, and also with two other different techniques named PID-MPRS and PID-PSO through the simulation of two multi-machine power system examples with a variety of disturbances. The problem regarding of optimal power flow in bipolar DC networks is addressed in this paper from the recursive programming stand of view. A hyperbolic relationship between constant power terminals and voltage profiles is used to resolve the optimal power flow in bipolar DC networks. The proposed approximation is based on the Taylors' Taylor series expansion. In addition, nonlinear relationships between dispersed generators and voltage profiles are relaxed based on the small voltage voltage-magnitude variations in contrast with power output. The resulting optimization model transforms the exact nonlinear non-convex formulation into a quadratic convex approximation. The main advantage of the quadratic convex reformulation lies in finding the optimum global via recursive programming, which adjusts the point until the desired convergence is reached. Two test feeders composed of 21 and 33 buses are employed for all the numerical validations. The effectiveness of the proposed recursive convex model is verified through the implementation of different metaheuristic algorithms. All the simulations are carried out in the MATLAB programming environment using the convex disciplined tool known as CVX with the SEDUMI and SDPT3 solvers.

We consider optimization problems with objective and constraint functions that may be nonconvex and nonsmooth. Problems of this type arise in important applications, many having solutions at points of nondifferentiability of the problem functions. We present a line search algorithm for situations when the objective and constraint functions are locally Lipschitz and continuously differentiable on open dense subsets of R-n. Our method is based on a sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm that uses an l(1) penalty to regularize the constraints. A process of gradient sampling (GS) is employed to make the search direction computation effective in nonsmooth regions. We prove that our SQP-GS method is globally convergent to stationary points with probability one and illustrate its performance with a MATLAB implementation.

Many design requirements need to be considered in designing an ultrasonic motor. To solve the multi-objective optimization problem, sequential quadratic programming and finite element method are applied to the design process. The finite element method is used for modal analysis and harmonic response analysis of the ultrasonic motor. The sequential quadratic programming is employed to determine the optimal design solution. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, it is applied to the optimization of a rod shape ultrasonic motor. Design results show that all the requirements of motor design are satisfied and the design indexes related to motor performance show significant improvements after optimization. A prototype motor with 15 mm in diameter is manufactured using the optimization results. The stator vibration characteristics and the motor performance are tested. The results show that this design method is available and effective for the design of ultrasonic motors. (C) 2012 Elsevier BY. All rights reserved.
