Hybrid algorithm for dynamic economic dispatch with valve-point effects

Dynamic economic dispatch problem in power system considering valve-point effects of generators is a non-smooth, non-convex and multi-dimensional constrained optimisation problem. In allusion to those characteristics, this study proposes a hybrid algorithm which integrates low-discrepancy sequences, improved shuffled frog leaping algorithm and sequential quadratic programming. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been verified by using case studies based on 5-unit, 10-unit and 30-unit test systems over a period of 24 h. The results show that the proposed method has improved solution quality and computation efficiency, compared with most current approaches.

Spacecraft Formation Flying Dynamics and Control Using the Geomagnetic Lorentz Force

The motion of a charged satellite subjected to the Earth's magnetic field is considered. The Lorentz force, which acts on a charged particle when it is moving through a magnetic field, provides a new concept of propellantless electromagnetic propulsion. A dynamic model of a charged satellite, including the effect of the Lorentz force in the vicinity of a circular or an elliptic orbit, is derived and its application to formation flying is considered. Based on Hill-Clohessy-Wiltshire equations and Tschauner-Hempel equations, analytical approximations for the relative motion in Earth orbit are obtained. The analysis based on the linearized equations shows the controllability of the system by stepwise charge control. The sequential quadratic programming method is applied to solve the orbital transfer problem of the original nonlinear equations in which the analytical solutions cannot be obtained. A strategy to reduce the charge amount using sequential quadratic programming is also developed.

A New Method for Initial Parameters Optimization of Guided Projectiles

A new algorithm was developed for the initial parameters optimization of guided projectiles with multiple constraints. Due to the relationship between the analytic guidance logic and state variables of guided projectiles, the Radau pseudospectral method was used to discretize the differential equations including control variables and state variables with multiple constraints into series algebraic equations that were expressed only by state variables. The initial parameter optimization problem was transformed to a nonlinear programming problem, and the sequential quadratic programming algorithm was used to obtain the optimal combinations of initial height and range to target for the final velocity of guided projectiles maximum with constraints. Comparing with the appropriate initial conditions solved by Monte Carlo method and the flight characteristics solved by integrating the original differential equations in the optimal initial parameters computed by the new algorithm, the feasibility of new algorithm was validated.

Transfer Design Exploiting Resonant Orbits and Manifolds in the Saturn-Titan System

The application of dynamical systems techniques to trajectory design has demonstrated that employing invariant manifolds and resonant flybys expands the trajectory options and potentially reduces the Delta V requirements. Low-cost transfer trajectories from two- and three-dimensional resonant orbits are explored in the Saturn-Titan system via Poincare mapping techniques and the application of dynamical systems theory. Natural maneuver-free transfers between resonant orbits and libration point orbits are constructed with the aid of a trajectory design tool that blends manifold arcs associated with unstable resonant orbits. Homoclinic-type resonant connections exist in two and three dimensions and are computed employing the transfer design tool. As an application of resonant transitions to preliminary mission design, the accessibility of Hyperion from orbits that are resonant with Titan is examined, and two transfer trajectories to the orbit of Hyperion are constructed by exploiting the invariant manifolds associated with unstable resonant orbits. A local optimization algorithm is employed to further decrease the cost of insertion and to illustrate the relationship between the local minimum and the invariant manifolds.

Treatment of Restaurant Wastewater by Pilot-Scale Electrocoagulation-Electroflotation: Optimization of Operating Conditions

In the present study, restaurant wastewater containing high concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), and oil and grease (OG) was treated by the combined electrocoagulation-electroflotation (EC-EF) process on a pilot scale. A central composite design was applied to the experiment design and the response surface methodology was adopted to build the response surface models of effluent COD, TSS, and OG. The sequential quadratic programming method was utilized to optimize the operating conditions of the treatment process. The analysis of variance of the experimental data shows that the coefficients of determination of the response surface models of effluent COD, TSS, and OG were 0.98, 0.982, and 0.989, respectively. The validity of these models was tested by confirmation experiments with satisfactory results. Zero trade effluent surcharges were achieved under optimized operating conditions. In spite of the operating cost calculated with respects to energy, electrode, and chemical consumptions, up to Hong Kong Dollar water or 52% of the concession in trade effluent surcharge can be saved, revealing the cost-effectiveness of the combined EC-EF technique and its potential for full-scale implementation. Energy optimization in chiller plants: A novel formulation and solution using a hybrid optimization technique

The central chilled water plant is one of the major power-consuming units of a building. Even small reductions in power consumption could achieve significant energy conservation. Hence, optimization of a chiller plant is necessary for energy savings without compromising the comfort level of the end user. The present work deals with identifying the system parameters and developing a novel formulation for a chiller plant and its optimization using a hybrid optimization technique. The optimization model formulation is based on finding an optimal mix of equipment and operating parameters in the chiller plant for minimum electrical power consumption. It takes into account the performance characteristics of the chillers, cooling towers and pumps, and optimizes the energy consumed based on the required loads and the ambient atmospheric conditions. sequential quadratic programming combined with the modified branch and bound method was used to develop the hybrid optimization algorithm. A case study is presented for a typical chiller plant. The results indicate that the present optimization method could be a potential method of making energy savings.

A new hybrid algorithm for global optimization and slope stability evaluation

A new hybrid optimization algorithm was presented by integrating the gravitational search algorithm （GSA） with the sequential quadratic programming （SQP）, namely GSA-SQP, for solving global optimization problems and minimization of factor of safety in slope stability analysis. The new algorithm combines the global exploration ability of the GSA to converge rapidly to a near optimum solution. In addition, it uses the accurate local exploitation ability of the SQP to accelerate the search process and find an accurate solution. A set of five well-known benchmark optimization problems was used to validate the performance of the GSA-SQP as a global optimization algorithm and facilitate comparison with the classical GSA. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed method for slope stability analysis was investigated using three ease studies of slope stability problems from the literature. The factor of safety of earth slopes was evaluated using the Morgenstern-Price method. The numerical experiments demonstrate that the hybrid algorithm converges faster to a significantly more accurate final solution for a variety of benchmark test functions and slope stability problems.

Optimal design of damping controllers using a new hybrid artificial bee colony algorithm

This paper integrates the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm with the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) to create the new hybrid optimization algorithm, ABC-SQP, for solving global optimization problems and damping of low frequency oscillations in power system stability analyses. The new algorithm combines the global exploration ability of ABC to converge rapidly to a near optimum solution and the accurate local exploitation ability of SQP to accelerate the search process and find an accurate solution. A set of well-known benchmark optimization problems is used to validate the performance of the ABC-SQP as a global optimization algorithm and to facilitate a comparison with the classical ABC. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the hybrid algorithm converges faster to a significantly more accurate final solution for a variety of benchmark test functions. Power system stabilizers and supplementary static VAR compensator controllers are designed for two-area-four-machine and five-area-sixteen-machine systems to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the new method in power systems. The performance of the proposed ABC-SQP algorithm is compared with the classic ABC and the genetic algorithm (GA) through eigenvalue analysis and nonlinear time-domain simulation. The simulation results indicate that the controllers designed by the ABC-SQP perform better than those designed by ABC and GA. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Optimal power flow solution using improved harmony search method

This paper describes the improved harmony search method (IHS) to solve optimal power flow (OPF) problems. The harmony search is one of meta-heuristic search methods inspired by the improvisation of musicians developed by Geem (2001) [23]. The proposed algorithm was tested with five standard IEEE test systems (6-bus, 14-bus, 30-bus, 57-bus and 118-bus test systems). The tests were divided into smooth and non-smooth fuel-cost cases. The comparisons among solutions obtained by sequential quadratic programming (SQP), genetic algorithms (GA) and IHS were conducted. As revealed from the simulated results, the effectiveness of the IHS for solving OPF problems was confirmed. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

An inexact ₁ penalty SQP algorithm for PDE-constrained optimization with an application to shape optimization in linear elasticity

We develop an optimization algorithm which is able to deal with inexact evaluations of the objective function. The proposed algorithm employs sequential quadratic programming with a line search that uses the (1) penalty function for an Armijo-like condition. Both the objective gradient computations for the quadratic subproblems and the objective function computations for the line search admit some inexactness which is controlled by the algorithm. We prove convergence results for the presented algorithm under suitable assumptions. The kind of optimization problems handled by the algorithm arises, for example, when we apply iterative solvers in the evaluation of the reduced objective function of a shape optimization problem subject to the linear elasticity equations. In the second part of this paper, we present an application of the algorithm to the shape optimization of steel profiles using nested iterations with adaptively refined meshes. It is shown how the inexactness in the algorithm translates to an acceptable residual of the state and adjoint state solutions in the iterative solver. We look at three different stopping criteria for the outer iterations. Numerical results are presented.
